I absolutely know every track on Jagged Little Pill by heart to this day! I stopped smoking decades ago, but it was definitely a part of my life in college!

How old were you when you learned about Emmett Till?

When I was 12, I volunteered as usher when the Southern Poverty Law Center dedicated Maya Lin’s monument to the martyrs of the Civil Rights movement. I had never heard many of the names before then.

Were you taught about Emmett in school or did you learn about his death as an adult?

Dangers of AI: Oprah podcast

I listened to this episode this afternoon; these people’s stories of AI induced psychosis are so heartbreaking: https://open.spotify.com/episode/73r3OVcDwWFCBF34l4RIFe?si=cqdgws6RTB6xM5tvqGRm3Q&utm_source=copy-link

Community building

How have you built a community for yourself where you live? As a military brat, my nuclear family moved a LOT for the first eleven years of my life, so I watched my parents build community when we moved, often through the church they joined. As an adult, I live in a mid-sized city, so I have several circles that overlap somewhat.

My child has moved abroad, and while part of me romanticizes the thought of emigrating myself some day, the pragmatic side of me worries if it would be possible to truly integrate into a new community at my age.

How have you built community for yourself and your family?

Hopefully this prosecution will finally lead to some substantial prison time! These grifters have been actively harming women with minimal consequences for too long.

Bitch: Meredith Brooks vs. Lizzo

Has anyone else heard the song from Lizzo’s new album? It’s not really a cover, more a reinterpretation. I found the original song really meaningful when I was younger, and it still resonates for me now. I don’t know that Lizzo’s version adds to Meredith Brooks’ original.

I did not know this about Jason Sudeikis! Is this weaponization of PR relatively new or it just more widely publicized now?

Consistent self care

What are some ways you build self care into your daily routine so they don’t fall by the wayside on your busiest days?

I keep scented lotion in my bedside table so I can give myself a foot massage in the evening before bed. Sometimes I forget, but it does help me wind down before sleep when I make time for this!

I hate how ā€œself careā€ā€™has been commercialized in some ways! For me, it means choosing to take time to care for my body, whether it’s making myself wake up early to exercise or staying hydrated enough.

The sandwich generation

I was listening to The Ebro, Laura, Rosenberg show this morning, and they were talking about their kids, since it’s Family Friday. The conversation then segued into Peter talking about his concerns about his parents aging and becoming less mobile. Laura talked about her mom spending too much time scrolling on social media and not enough time being active.

I could really relate to those concerns! How do you encourage your parents to find a balance between being active enough so that they maintain their quality of life, but respect that some basic human activities truly are more challenging for them now?

I spend a lot of time at the pool during the summer! I’d love to go to the beach, but the conditions haven’t been good on my days off so far. What are your favorite things about the summer?

I bought this book after a friend recommended it. Have you begun ā€œthe changeā€ yet? What do you wish someone had told you earlier?

What’s your fitness routine like?

I went to the Y today and strength trained for the first time since DECEMBER! I hadn’t realized I had gotten so completely out of my routine. I also swim laps and take yoga classes, but struggle with making them a high enough priority in my life. What works for you?

What are your opinions on makeup?

Personally, I rarely wear it because I have other things I prefer to do with my time, and I’m lucky to work in a career where my appearance isn’t relevant in that way. I absolutely understand why some women enjoy wearing makeup, how it can be part of their armor or just a creative expression. It’s just not something I’ve prioritized.
