Looking for recommendations on what to use on Inigos paw pads. He keeps licking his carpal pads. His pads are good but the carpal pads are a little wonky.

I think in future I will need to choose one or the other as everyone knows… Galgos always win 🤣

I adopted my 19month old son 1month and 20days ago. It feels like ive had him way longer. I havent let him off leash yet; not even in the back yard and it is fenced in 6ft around. Did anyone take any steps to letting their galgo off leash in their yard. Do they try to jump fences 6ft high? I really want to give him the freedom to run. His in house zoomies are intense and I think he would be much happier if I can let him run in his yard.

After 5 months they have bonded well. Brindle female Ilse have had her since Feb last year. White male Arne adopted him back in Feb this year

I have an ~8 year old Galgo. He was rescued in Spain and I adopted him 4 years ago. I don’t know much about that his time there other than he was surrendered by a galguero being very underweight and fearful.

He took months to even wag his tail, but has since come out of his shell. However some things are still impossible and almost seem to be getting worse recently.

For example, he will NOT let anyone trim his nails anymore. I tried 2 vets and 3 groomers with no luck, even with trazodone + gabapentin. I found a vet willing to give an injectable sedation. Even then, it took 2 vet techs + me to hold him down on the floor. He was screaming, resisting and thrashing to the point that he banged his head on the floor. He had to be muzzled and covered with a towel.

Other things are hard too. He will whine and shake in an unfamiliar place unless I am consoling him. He’s very attached to me (which I love) but without me or a very familiar person, hes so distressed. I did take him to dog parks to build confidence and play, but after a few minutes he lays down next to me away from everyone else. He gets so excited once we arrive but taps out quick.

He got bloodwork at the vet (pending results) and a prescription for fluoxetine. The vet recommended a behaviorist.

Has anyone else gone through something similar?

Any tips to get your Galgo to go in the rain? He goes to the door and I know he has to go and then we get out there and nothing! He has a rain jacket and I have a big umbrella.

Hi! I’m considering adding a rescue galga to my family. Currently I have an almost one year old whippet. He can use some company, and I would love to give a Galga a loving home.

I trained a lot to be able to have off lead walks with my whippet. It worked out great, and he is very well trained off leash. Thats what we both enjoy the most: exploring the fields and woods off lead (where possible).

My only concern is that a rescue galga might never be able to walk off lead without a fenced area. And i would love for the galga to be able to join our off leash walks. I see people have them double leashed for safety. Is this based on the trauma, lack of training or because of their prey drive? I have experience training sighthounds, so I was wondering what other peoples experience is with this.

I adopted a BIG BOY galgo through an organization here in Canada from Galgos en Familia at the very end of March.

We've had some large issues, like him coming with an undisclosed infection that turned into a genital abscess less than a week in (all clear now), a family emergency requiring frequent travel and a temporary relocation.

I know the moving and stress is terrible, and if I had been able to see the month ahead when I was adopting, I wouldn't have gone through with it but life comes at you fast, and we're both dealing with it the best we can. Sometimes your mothers cancer advances suddenly and she ends up in the hospital and you have to quit your job with your brand new rescue to move home to care for her.

He's overall adjusting well, has gained 2 vet approved kg since his time in the shelter, friendly and affectionate to strangers, and even learned how to sit! But now, his soft poops and tummy troubles are starting to get worse again after switching to a vet recommended digestion food, and he's started to shed a LOT.

Overall, he's been more calm, settling better when I leave him for 2-4 hours, and energy levels and playfulness are all improving after the emergency move, but his gut and coat aren't reacting in line with his behaviour and I'm concerned.

Is this just probably a 'normal' sighthound quirk I'll learn to manage seasonally ? It is slightly warmer where we are now, and I read that sometimes galgos can 'blow their kennel coat' when they reach a healthy weight and feel less fearful.

I guess I'm mostly looking for reassurance I'm doing everything I can in an impossible situation to set us both up for success down the line.

Hi everyone! I recently adopted a beautiful 4-year-old rescue Galgo. We don’t know anything about her past, but she spent the last year in a shelter in Spain. Even though we’ve seen some behavioral progress in just one week, she keeps howling at night. I live in a 75-square-meter apartment, and she has access to the living room and kitchen (I’ve been sleeping on the couch to keep her company). I’ve tried putting on white noise in the background, giving her chews, and distracting her with food, ignoring the howls and taking deep breaths but nothing works—she just won’t calm down. I really need help because I’m barely getting 3 hours of sleep a night. Have your Galgos ever howled at night? How did you get them to stop?"

I have a question for people who have galgos with other dogs ! I currently have a border collie who is only 1 and a half, and full of energy. Full.

I have always been attracted to greyhounds and think they are a breed that corresponds a lot to my personality. Life happened and I got a border collie, but now I'm wondering if maybe he'd benefit from a buddy to keep him entertained. He's really sociable with other dogs and doesn't seem to be overly territorial. I work full time and soon he's going to be alone during the day (which doesn't really seem to bother him too much), but maybe having another dog around could be nice for him, and it might help the galgo ease into the family ? I don't know really...

I know that galgosare usually a little bit more laid back and lazier than borders so I'm kinda worried about a personality clash... What do people with greyhounds / galgos think and mixing high and low energy breeds ? I live near Spain and I would LOVE to adopt one and give them a nice life.

I want to show off our girl and check if we're on the right track with progress and if there is any advice since it's our first sighthound and despite all the research and reading I think it's always good to check in

We got our 2.5 year old galga 2 months ago directly from the shelter in Spain. She's on the larger side for galgo females, with 22kg and 66cm tall.

I'd say she is pretty well adjusted, no noticeable trauma responses. We have 3 cats and it was important that she was prey drive tested and ok with that.

On the first day she got into our car without issues, was calm enough to receive a bath and after the initial freeze response from seeing an apartment and the cats she seemed to be getting more settled every day. It took her a week to stop being afraid of the stairs, although she will sometimes still be scared of some doors and hallways.

We started leaving her alone for short periods from the start to help prevent separation anxiety and teach her that this is just a normal occurrence and that we will come back.

After about 3 weeks she started wagging her tail when she saw us and even playing indoors and being goofy.

She managed to gain a kilo and eats well, she's taking a vet recommended supplement too. Her poop is now fully solid and she poops twice per day.

We recently started taking her to a fenced dog park to run, early in the morning and late at night when there are no other dogs. She wears a basket muzzle whenever she's unleashed in the park even when there are no dogs just so she gets used to the concept of dog park = muzzle time, as we want to be safe and avoid any accidents. We noticed that she plays in a very growly, vocal and nibbly way and I am not sure that all dogs would understand the intention of play behind it so I don't want anything to escalate. I must admit I was worried at first until I realized she just likes barking and play-growling and nibbling when she gets excited

She is mostly grasping the concept of peeing outside but she's had some accidents, especially overnight when she couldn't hold it for the 8 horus.

She's had to get a tooth pulled about 2 weeks in and after antibiotics she now sleeps through the night on most days.

But it still sometimes happens that she will pee indoors. not too often, i'd say about once every 2 weeks on average and it is always connected to some slight change in routine. for example last time it was because we had to be away for a couple of hours and this would normally be a timeframe she could hold without problem. We clean the spots with enzyme cleaner and we don't shout or punish after we find a puddle, just clean and take her outside.

I am wondering/seeking reassurance if this is good progress overall for 2 months, is there is anything we can do to prevent these accidents, is there something we might be doing wrong unknowingly or is it just a matter of time and routine?

We adopted our girl 5 months ago... First two months were tough; she didn't get off the couch and she seemed very fearful. Now, she's definitely better. She get on and off the couch, she likes walk out, she runs outside (even if for just five minutes) and she looks like she's opening with us. But she spend most of the time on the couch and she really seems don't care about playing with us. I've tried to create some toys to make her exploring, but nothing... She takes a look and than keep back sleeping on the couch. 😄 If we don't call her to go outside or to go to bed, she would spend all her day on the couch.
She doesn't seems unhappy, but I must say that she doesn't seem happy too. She seems... relaxed! 😄
Any suggestions? Are we doing right?
