New owner A big step up from the last gen

Many moons ago I owned a Toyota GTS 86 (Basically a premium trim FRS for my yank friends out there), and I have to say the new car is a massive step up. The suspension is much more dialed in, the new car is significantly faster, an extra 50nm and 25kw doesn’t sound like a lot on paper but I think it’s more about the availability of the torque all throughout the mid band up to red line.

My only complaint is the electric steering in the new gen cars lacks a little bit of feel around the centre of the rack. It’s almost like the car doesn’t re-centre the wheel in the last 8th of a turn. I will head out for alignment soon to see if I can get that feeling a bit better. Might also try some firmer bushes for the rack.

In terms of the future of the car, I’ve got Enkei RS05rr’s that have just rocked up, coilovers from shockworks on the way, STI Brembo’s I’m restoring and have slapped on an Invidia N2 exhaust for now. Next year we might grab a turbo kit if I have the time and left over funds 😂

I cannot stress enough that this is probably the last time we’ll see a raw light weight 6 speed manual like this in our life time, if you’re thinking about getting one, do it.

Another RTV in the pickup datapoint

Post image
Upvotes

My 26 BRZ tS w/ 1400 miles on the Odometer is at the shop getting a Formula Delta oil pan installed. I was very particular on the break in process changing the oil at 650 miles and not revving past 4k until after 1k miles.

Durning the oil pan installation process, the shop sent me this picture of the excessive RTV in the pickup. I know it’s not catastrophic and it wasn’t causing low pressure because I installed the Ansix oil pressure sensor and everything seemed fine. I just want to provide this datapoint to back up what u/rdsolns wrote in his post “PSA, Drop your pans:” https://www.reddit.com/r/GR86/comments/1u1mqr0/psa_drop_your_pan_on_your_new_gr86/

If you don’t take your car to the track, it’s almost certainly not a problem, but if you plan to track your car, or engage in sustained high G right hand turns, I highly recommend the following:

Formula Delta high Capacity pan that allows you to clean out the pickup during each oil change

Ansix water to oil cooler

Ansix oil pressure sensor kit

5-30 oil w/ 500mL overfill

Verus also makes a high capacity pan, but it requires header heat shield cutting or removal. It’s also only sold as a prototype and not cast aluminum like the FxD pan. Baffles are not sufficient as the data suggests the oil starvation problem is a capacity and temperature problem.

I recognize lots of people track their GR86s and BRZs without doing these mods and haven’t blown up their engine, yet. However, it is concerning to see how much is in the pickup after only 1400 miles and also the amount of RTV squeezed into the oil pan cavity. It’s impossible to conclude the RTV causes low oil pressure, but it’s also easy to see how it could contribute in long tail scenarios.

It’s not cheap to fortify the engine with these mods, but it’s cheaper than the alternative.

Got smucked by a fat rock waiting at an intersection :( right on the nose. Spat out from a car cornering on the 3rd day of owning the car

Have had the Brz for 2 weeks now, its exceeding all my expectations! Only thing I really want to do is clear side markers and axel back exhaust.

Have noticed an increased amount of suv's/trucks that need to tail gate or pull out infront of you aggressively... lots of old dudes love to chat about their old sports cars which is fun.

The gearing, cruising to work in 4th gear puts me at 10kph over so thats going to be a dumb ticket one day.

No regrets, cant wait for break-in to be over

New owner Handbrake

Hi, brand new GR86 owner - got the car less than a week ago with 500km (2026).

Quick question, how often do the brakes get stuck to the rotor?

Left from work today and heard a rotating sound while driving. Stopped the car, raised and lower the handbrake and the sound was gone.

Did I just have the handbrake too high while the pads were warm?

Help! Puzu PZ-C7 DSP Amp - Which harness to get?

I want to buy a Puzu PZ-C7 DSP amp from aliexpress but I am unsure which harness to get. They offer two options: Toyota 2005-2017 and 2018-2025. My 86 is a 2024.

However in the specification they say to order the 2005-2017 harness but the image of the connectors don't look similar to what the Beatsonic setup and I can't find a google of someone installing one in a GR86/BRZ. Someone with experience please help. Thanks

About one and a half years into ownership. My thoughts.

I bought my Pavement Gray 2025 Premium MT GR86 last year in March brand new. It didn't come with the performance package, which I didn't mind. In that time, it's been driven 15,700 miles and seen 4 oil changes including the 1k mile break-in. I do all the maintenance myself and has never been touched by a certified shop mechanic after being driven off the lot. I do oil changes every 4k miles because I do a lot of city driving.

The only real performance mod I've done to it is swap to a Yonaka cat-back exhaust because the stock exhaust was just too quiet. Otherwise, I've also added a front splitter and side skirts from Infamous Aero.

Here are my thoughts after owning it for this long.

Pros:

- Handling is absolutely godly

- Made me more social. People will walk up to me at the gas pump to talk to me or in front of restaurants and stores

- Will definitely turn heads good or bad. I get high schoolers yelling at me to rev, motorcyclists giving me thumbs up, and waves from other car enthusiasts

- I'm not a tall guy and I feel like this car was made to fit me perfectly

- Handles my Costco runs just fine

- I can fit a full set of 4 wheels+tires in the trunk with the back seats down just fine

- Oil changes are quick and mess-free with the oil filter being so conveniently placed and a fumoto-valve installed on the oil pan

- I look back at it every time I park it. Never done that to any previous car I've owned before

- Got me some Blizzaks for the winter and it handles snow like a champ. My concern was that it's such a light rwd car, but nothing a few bags of sand in the trunk can't fix

Cons:

- No noise dampening and the stock PS4 tires are loud. I will be swapping over to Continental Extremecontact dws06 after the tread wears out of these

- Although the trunk space is great, the trunk opening is small

- Blind spots suck with the OEM side mirrors. Got some wide-angle side mirrors and that solved this issue

- Trucks and SUVs race me and ride my ass. I'm just trying to get to work

- The clutch spring takes a lot of getting used to (came from driving a MT civic for 10 years). I swapped the OEM clutch spring to an aftermarket one and that mostly solved the issue. But every time I go back and sit in my brother's civic, I miss that clutch no lie

- Stock sound system is ass even after messing around with both the built in EQ and audio settings on my phone. Got the BeatSonic amplifier and honestly wished I gotten it sooner

- Paint is thin af. Got a paint correction pen and have done several corrections already

Overall, I absolutely love this car and will be putting many more miles on it in the future.

Konig Hypergrams 17x8 fitted with 225/45 Continental ECS02

Came from Toyota's stock 17s wrapped in 215/45 PS4S tires. The difference in overall weight between the new and stock setup is definitely noticeable with the stock weighing over 20lbs and the Konigs weighing <17lbs. I don't really pushed the car much but I loved the grip the old PS4Ss had over the stock Primacies. However, no major complaints with the ECS02s just yet. I will say that the Continentals are floaty, which was a common complaint I read when doing some research and I can't say if this is caused by the larger sidewalls or if it's the nature of the tires. As for the wheel color, I was looking for bronze but I didn't want an overly bright color so these are nice. The "Race Bronze" does pop a little bit when the Sun hits them right. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase as my first ever set of wheels on a budget.

Edit: the meatier tires definitely make daily driving more comfortable. My butthole doesn't pucker as much when going over speed bumps or hitting potholes!!

Buying 2026 new GR86 from dealer

I’m about to purchase a new 2026 Toyota GR86 MT Premium and want to make sure I don’t overpay for unnecessary dealer add-ons.

What charges are considered normal and expected on the final purchase agreement (e.g., MSRP, destination fee, tax, title, registration, documentation fee)?

What fees or add-ons do dealers commonly try to sneak in that I should be aware of?

Are products like these generally worth buying, or should I decline them?

Toyota Extended Warranty / Vehicle Service Agreement
GAP Insurance
Tire & Wheel Protection
Paint/Interior Protection
VIN Etching
3-Year Unlimited Maintenance/Service Plan
Key Replacement Protection
Road Hazard Protection

Which of these can be negotiated or removed entirely?

What should I specifically ask the finance manager before signing to avoid hidden costs?

Are there any red flags on the financing or purchase contract that first-time buyers often miss?

If you recently bought a GR86 (or any new Toyota), what add-ons did you accept, what did you decline, and why?

I don’t like black wheels. Which do you think looks best against yellow paint?

EDIT: thanks all, I don’t know how silver skipped my mind. I asked for light, medium, and dark silvers too and light silver is a winner. Picture in comments

I asked AI to refinish the OEM wheels in white, a bright gold bronze, and a dull dark bronze. Happy to hear other ideas of what looks good against yellow, but I’m leaning toward the white or lighter bronze here. Happy to see other non-black wheels against yellow or other bright colors.

Recently ran at New Hampshire motor speedway and Thompson Motorsports park and was very happy with the car. Coolant temperatures never got over 200, and oil was under 220 for the most part, with a peak of 227 while at Thompson when it was warmer out and longer sessions.

Gr86 wheel help

Hi, I recently bought a salvage gr86 10th anniversary edition and would like to rebuild for myself. 2 of the wheels are most likely damaged (i will receive the car in 3 months and update you guys) and since they are forged aluminum, i think it would be best to replace them. I really like the design of OEM 10th anniversary wheels. Is there anybody selling 2 wheels in the EU or would you guys suggest some other wheel with a similar design.

P.s. I’m also considering brown coloured wheels.

My fellow 86ers , where can I buy the all the performance pack upgrades .

-GR official parts only (Brembo brake kit, Sachs dampers, GR intake, GR strut bars, ducktail spoiler, GR aero piece on rear window ) . Having the most trouble with the break kit the most then the Sachs since our cars here don't have the performance package as an option

Hi everyone, I am currently looking for some info (photos welcome) from anyone who might be running or has ran a 18x8.5 +38 wheels with 225/40-r18 or 235/40r18 on stock suspension. At the moment, I am keeping it on stock suspension. Will this wheel + tire fit ok? will there be enough space to the suspension? will it be flush/somewhat flush or will it poke? new to this, but thanks in advance.

Question Random Radio Turn-On??

Does anyone else’s GR86 randomly turn on the radio after not playing sound from your phone for a little bit?? It’s so so annoying and I don’t know how to turn it off😂
