State of the Collection Is there a cure?

Post image

How do I cure myself from this illness? First it was fountain pens....then fountain pen ink, then playing with dip pens and calligraphy, and around and around it goes in one vicious cycle. Is there any hope for me? Or am I just too far gone?

New Ink Day Ink mazeru x TWSBI, a karashi-iro duo

Shining a spotlight on a little-known ink brand today. KA-KU is a stationery store in Osaka and they have their own inks. Here, in the Ink mazeru series, is a mustard color in homage to independant illustrator Karashi Soell. Her name might ring a bell if you’re a TWSBI fan as they did a collab some years ago… which makes for a beautiful and satisfying pairing!

3rd picture shows a comparison to the closest yellows I have on hand (paper is Col-O-Ring from the Well Appointed Desk).

And a shout out to the online store Furinink for bringing such hard to find products to european market!

New Pen Day NPurplePenDay + NPurpleInkDay

It wasn't exactly planned, but I ended up getting New Purple Pens and New Purple Inks. So I thought I should share !

Purple Pen :

- Fine Writing International x Wagner Amethyst 14k F

- Fine Writing International x Wagner 八犬伝(智)18k F

Purple Ink :

- Van Dieman's Arctic 90 ° North

- Van Dieman's 2025 Ink of month Firefly

PS: (The pen is not shown in these photos but the ink is Van Dieman's 2023 Ink of month November )

I have owned Ebonite pen before but didn't used it that much and sold . But then I saw this one (八犬伝(智)) with a blue and purple barrel and I was sold in the first 0.2 sec lol

I am very glad I got it, it is heavier but not uncomfortable, it looks and feels premium on hand. The Jowo 18K F has good ink flow , inked with Firefly which has a great amount of yellow tone iridescent shimmer, base color is light enough but very much eligible even with a F nib.

Amethyst is a real beauty because the resin shines when moving the barrel. The new ink released by Van Dieman's is perfect matchy matchy. There are beautiful halo effect with this ink.

Another Reddit user u/paris_pen reached out to have some artwork created for their fountain pen and ink focused blog, and I thought I would share it here as well. I really love how this one came out! I’m not big on blue inks, but ads-gao is my go to blue. Drawn with a Kaweco Sport <f>. The blog is https://encredanstemps.com if anyone wants to check it out

Advice Filling piston pen with eye dropper

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I fill my piston pens with an eye dropper, especially with sample inks that are very low. This way, I can put in anything and control the amount. I recorded a video of my process. I twist the knob occasionally, so the feed doesn't flood. The pen here is TWSBI Eco Serpentine. Inked with J herbin Vert Atlantide.

Does anyone else fill their pistons this way?

Edit: Mostly for samples <2ml. I don't have an ink miser.

Not Safe for Pens Laundry

Let me start by saying there has been no nashing of teeth or pulling of beards - I’m owning all of this, so no shade on my partner, as she was incredibly sweet and thoughtful to surprise me by doing my laundry. If she’s reading this I love you.

I’m a chronic pocket leaver - screws, knives, cash, dog treats, etc, and pens. As such, I’m quite diligent about checking my pockets before anything goes into the washer. This is not a problem from which my partner suffers, so in everything went.

Long story short, I just grabbed my pants and found this (cap must have come unscrewed). Amazingly, nothing in the load is covered in Iroshizuku ajisai blue, but is my m1000 m800 toast?

This is an M400 from West Germany. Never inked. Came with the original box and even the original wrapping paper. Wife says I shouldn't use it. What do you all think?

New Pen Day First Fountain Pen

My first fountain pen. I stumbled across the Jinhao 82 whilst looking for any type of refillable pen.

I'm a complete beginner to fountain pens but the 82 is definitely the start of a budding obsession.

Aside from some minor spillages from inking the pen, she writes like a dream and is already very forgiving.

Currently inked with Karikos ink in Bordeaux. A cheap ink I found online, but holds up surprisingly well. (I'm left handed and so far haven't had any smudges.)

I can't wait to expand my pen and ink collection ♡

Discussion What do you say when people ask “why fountain pens?”

Post image
745 Upvotes

(My messy pen desk, shared for funsies)

Everyone asks. And they always expect some deep, meaningful thought about the durability of the written word and how its invention has propelled us…

But really, I just like em.

- I think they’re pretty.

- Fixing them is like a puzzle with an antique at the end.

- They’re nice to write with.

What do you say when people ask you why you like fountain pens?

Sailor PROCOLOR 500 clear fountain pen. It came in a box with two black ink cartridges, but I separately bought a converter and am planning to fill it with Platinum Pigment Blue. It has an MF nib. I will have this as my second daily pen. Yay

Vintage Pen Day Vintage Parker 51 ad

I found this ad on a copy of LIFE magazine I came across with my father’s things. It is the inside front cover ad, so a very pricy location, second only to the back cover (Coca Cola) and maybe the centerfold (Red Cross Shoes).

Make sure you read this with Trans-Atlantic accent in mind for the full effect!

Going to ink up my 51 tonight and put her in rotation.

Vintage Pen Day New-old pens (and inks!) day

Work has been shit and so I've gotten into the frankly terrible habit of browsing second-hand auction/fleamarket sites when feeling particularly fed-up and engaging in copious amounts of retail therapy.

  1. Pilot Silvern Dragon. Not much to say here. Gorgeous sterling silver body with two dragons embossed in it. A little tarnished and with a couple very small dents but still gorgeous. 18k nib, but not sure what size because the nib itself doesn't seem to say. Inked with TACCIA Sabimidori.
  2. Platinum #3776 Sansui. This is not a Century, and therefore does not have the slip & seal cap (the 3776 was rebranded to 3776 Century and gained the slip & seal caps only 2011 onwards). Am fairly sure it's the third pen down of this page of this catalog: https://archive.org/details/PlatinumPenCoCatalog1980s/cat06.jpg which dates it to somewhere in the 1980s. I do not have a magnet to test for sure but am reasonably certain this is a steel nib given that it doesn't have 14/18k marked on the nib, and the old 3776s did have steel nib versions. It is nevertheless surprisingly springy for a steel nib. Inked with Jacques Herbin Shogun, which, it may be somewhat unwise putting a shimmer ink into this but idc look at it it's so pretty.
  3. Platinum Amazonas (Pipa pipa). Wrapped in Suriname toad leather, produced somewhere 1973-74 ( https://www.platinum-pen.co.jp/100th_3/e-history.html#topic_2_5 ). 18k gold F nib. Inked with Iroshizuku syun-gyo. Writes very smoothly, and I got it for 65sgd which I consider a bargain.
