Fundamental Analysis Gold broke a two-week range today but the dollar didn't move - that's the part nobody's talking about
Gold broke a two-week range today and everyone's treating it like a trend change. The thing I can't get past: the dollar didn't move. Flat on the day while gold ran ~20 handles off the break.
That's the whole question for me. For most of this month gold has traded off rates and the dollar far more than off the war headlines - it literally fell through actual escalation for two straight weeks. So when it finally pushes up and DXY just sits there unchanged, I don't read that as a new regime. I read it as a momentum bounce that hasn't got macro confirmation behind it.
What actually carried it looked like equities - stocks were red at the US open and gold ticked up while they fell. That's the one clean cross-asset tell. But one soft session in stocks with a flat dollar isn't enough for me to call a turn.
And it matters because tomorrow is an ECB decision plus US jobless claims plus the Lagarde presser all inside about 30 minutes. That cluster is going to shove the dollar around hard, and the dollar is the exact thing I'm waiting on. So I'm trimming into it rather than pressing.
Anyone weighting the flat-dollar tell the same way, or reading the break as cleaner than I am?
