European fish consumption fell 21% in a decade, but aquaculture species are taking over the market (New EUMOFA Report Insights)
The European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products (EUMOFA) recently published its updated report analyzing EU seafood consumption trends over the past decade.
Here are the key findings from the data:
- Overall drop in wild fisheries: Total consumption dropped from ~13M tonnes in 2014 to ~10M tonnes in 2023. Wild species took a huge hit (cod supply dropped 43% due to quota cuts).
- Aquaculture filling the gap: While overall consumption declined, species with strong aquaculture supply chains (salmon, sea bass, sea bream, trout, shrimp) stabilized or grew.
- Retail & Convenience driving species selection: Supermarkets control ~79% of sales and heavily favor predictable pricing and year-round availability. Younger consumers increasingly avoid buying whole fish, opting for portioned/ready-to-cook fillets instead (studies show consumers pay up to €0.50/kg extra for convenience formats).
- Import reliance: The EU imports about 70% of its seafood. Self-sufficiency for salmon sits at just 1%, whereas trout (84%) and sea bream (74%) demonstrate strong internal production capacity.
It seems the future of retail seafood in Europe is almost entirely centered around predictable, convenience-focused aquaculture supply chains.

New Study: How shrimp spatial distribution in commercial ponds biases your biomass sampling and feeding strategies

I thought this community would find this recent research interesting. A joint study between UTMACH (Ecuador) and the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil) monitored commercial 5-hectare shrimp ponds to map out how shrimp actually distribute themselves.
Key takeaways:
- Clustered behavior: Shrimp are not randomly dispersed. They exhibit highly aggregated schooling behavior throughout the culture cycle.
- Depth is the main predictor: There is an inverse relationship between water depth and shrimp density. The deep perimeter trenches ("borrow pits") had significantly lower densities (~5 shrimp/m² vs ~6.5 shrimp/m² on the flat bottom "mesa").
- Size segregation: The largest shrimp were caught on the "mesa" (flat central area), showing significantly higher average body weights than those in the borrow pits.
- Avoidance of deep zones: The study suggests shrimp actively avoid deep zones due to organic waste buildup, which can cause benthic oxygen depletion and toxic metabolites (ammonia/H2S).
This strongly suggests that traditional sampling routines—such as throwing cast nets repeatedly in the same easily accessible deep spots—lead to massive biases in biomass calculation, which in turn messes up feed rationing and aerator placement.
