Hi! Im in NorCal. I planted this fig tree in soil about 5 months ago. It was doing great for a couple of months with me watering it every 2 days. A month and a half ago the leaves started to yellow, so I started watering it once a week since my soil is clay. But the leaves keep dying. Unfortunately, my backyard isn’t full sun so it’s probably getting about 4 to 5h of morning sun. Should I remove it from soil and plant it in a big pot so I can place it in a sunnier area?

The new growth at the bottom I’ve read different advice about taking them off, could I take them off and try to grow new plants out of these?

Started collecting figs this year and had no idea the insane amount of varieties that existed. I had previously only tried brown turkey

Seeing as our summer starts heating up until September?

My young Chicago Hardy has just a main stem and 7 developing figs within 6 inches on the upper portion of the plant. A large flush of growth is occurring below near the base.

For pruning consideration, do all leaves contribute to fig development or only leaves above or only below.

Also when branches form and figs appear on the branches, which leaves provide those figs nourishment.

I bought what was labeled an Olympian fig at Menards last year, on a whim. Planted it in a sheltered area, covered it last fall with straw, it died but came back this year. We had the coldest winter in about 15 years last year, so I was pleased.

These little fig starts popped out mid July. The Internet has me thoroughly confused as to how long it takes for a fig this size to reach ripeness. What say you experts? We typically have fairly warm weather till mid-late Oct.

Next year I plan to get a Celeste and a Chicago Hardy, they seem to be the choice for my zone in southern Indiana. Also, I plan to fold and pin this years growth and cover it very well with straw in a cage. If I do this, is it possible to get a breba crop?

When do I take cuttings/scions for propagating to trees? In Oregon, zone 8

So this is suppose to be a white maderina fig sapling and I recently got it and some of the leaves look like this. Even some of the newer leaves that grew in has some of this speckled browning but not as bad.

Any idea what might be causing it or should I be concerned?

Also any advice on should I prune or just let it grow? I was thinking of pruning the lowest branch and then just let the rest do its thing.

I was given this little guy back in May and eventually moved it into a planter with a mix of compost, coconut coir, and vermiculite. I recently snipped off several lower branches after watching a couple of YouTube videos, but it seems like all of those videos are for older figs, so I’m not really sure how I’m supposed to be pruning/caring for it at this stage!

Also… In the past couple of weeks, it started sprouting two other little guys beside it. Not sure if I’m supposed to be pulling those out/cutting them, or what?

Any advice about pruning/feeding/etc would be so, so appreciated. My sister and her boyfriend are going through a lot right now, so I’m worried about bothering them too much with a billion questions. Thank you so much! 💖

So I bought this as a cutting 2 seasons ago and this is the first year I am seeing the fruit myself. The seller on Facebook marketplace told me this was a peters honey but it doesn’t seem like it considering it is turning darker. I’m not very well versed in the fig community and growing but anything helps. I’ve been trying to figure out what it could possibly be. I picked the first fig a bit too early so there wasn’t really any flavour to go off of but the center or the eye of the fruit was like just starting to turn reddish/dark if that helps.
I’m really not sure what it could be, maybe a brown turkey or an Olympian?

I have been growing inground and potted figs for 5 years now. For the first time ever this has happened a couple times. Something is eating through my fruit bags and stealing my figs. Thing is, they are not doing much damage to them after stealing them. Did some research online. My thought was squirrels or chipmunk but I assumed they would eat them. According to ChatGPT could be a caterpillar, earwig or slug. We have had an unprecedented amount of rain in middle TN this year and not sure if this really could be an insect but curious to anyone’s knowledge and experience in this situation. As you see in the pics, it has eaten through bottom of the bag and barely eaten the fig.

I’m in zone 6A. Any chance these will ripen ?

I’m growing a few fig cuttings and noticed that one of them is growing vigorously while the others are still dormant. They’ve all received basically the same care and were potted at the same time, except my exquisite fig, aptly named Greg, decided it wanted to leaf out first. Now I’m wondering if Greg has already rooted, and how much longer I should expect Kazery and Del Sen Jaume Gran to take before they start rooting.

I got my fig tree several months ago. When should I remove the stake? Someone told me to repot it so I’m planning on getting a bigger pot this weekend. Hopefully that’ll make it larger and therefore stronger. But right now, it seems like it’s leaning a little and I’m not sure if it needs to be re-staked and straightened or if it’ll straighten itself? Is it too young to stand on its own?

Southeast US. Pretty much every branch has sad leaves. Some of the only ones that look healthy are the ones growing off the main trunk. Only thing I’ve done lately was remove some sod, expand the mulch area, and trim a few branches.

Could this be disease that entered through the exposed cuts? Too much water? We’ve been getting lots of rain

I just joined this sub today but I wanted to show off our fig trees.

The Celeste fig (Fanny) that I bought off fb marketplace back in May. She was just a twig with some small leaves. Stayed dormant until just about a couple weeks ago and now she is flourishing! The first picture is what was advertised by the fb seller but the tiny leafs were about full size leaves when I got her. The second pic is what I took today!

Picture 3&4 are of Finny who I think is an Italian honey fig. He is our mature fig tree (that’s always been in my boyfriend’s backyard that I didn’t even know existed for the past 2 years!) and I’ve only had 1 ripe fig so far even tho it was overripe (pic 5&6). The fig was so yummy and tasted like peaches and honey.

I’m just so happy right now because I’ve gotten really into gardening and growing fruit trees this year. I’ve really enjoyed scrolling through this sub and admiring everyone’s figs and wanted to share mine as well!

This is why my potted figs get watered 4-6 times a day in the summer. They seem to like the heat if they are watered enough.

The center has yellow spikes and texture is drier. It doesn’t smell or taste funny, just a little unusual than the other figs i’ve eaten. Please advise

Hi there folks, this is my first real post on here, and I am glad there is a figs reddit. I have two unknown figs in the fig orchard that didn't match what they're supposed to be. Both of them were given to me by prior owners who didn't exactly take care of them. One had to go through a full year of quarantine with full soil flushing because it was potted and being used as a toilet by stray cats (long weird story). The other was also potted, but barely cared for by the owners who had had it for years and could not figure out why it never produced (hoo boy there's a story behind that). The second one was so neglected it was a craggy, crooked barely alive mess. The first looked like a partial stump where someone had broken parts off and the fig refused to die. A bit of TLC later and both have grown substantially proving neither was diseased or lacking in vigor. The 'urinal' one was supposed to be an LSU type, while the neglected one was supposed to be Brown Turkey. This year they finally fruited and much to my surprise neither seems to be what the prior owners said they were. I've added a bunch of labeled photos, 'A1' is supposed to be the LSU type, 'B1' was supposed to be Brown Turkey. Thus far I've picked three fruits of each, some in 'not quite ripe status, another in ripe state and a third that is a bit overripe. I've got photos of the leaf morphology, and just to add extra info here should it matter. I've had A1 for two and a half years or so and it appears to put on a foot or more of growth per year, B1 I've had about a year and a half, and this year alone it's put on about a foot of growth and appears to still be actively growing despite fruit production. They were fertilized with a granular 10-10-10 and receive regular irrigation. Oh, and as for fruit flavor, both are honey flavored, sort of like a clover honey. If possible I'd like to hear what variety you think these figs are, since I'm not sure, and I know they resemble my existing Celeste and Chicago Hardy. If you need any info or more pictures of them let me know and thanks for any help you might have.

I have about 12 fig plants in 7-gallon pots using a soil mix similar to "Gary's Top Pot" mix (35% peat, 30% pumice, 20% perlite, 10% sand, 5% charcoal). I've measured the pH of the soil mix and its close to 7.

I'm using Osmocote Plus as the fertilizer and the plants seem to be growing well. Osmocote Plus has magnesium, but does not have calcium, so I thought that I need to just add that to the soil mix.

A friend of mine gifted me about 50 lbs of some calcium carbonate mineral (he grows chicken and gives this to the chicks).

Can I add this calcitic lime to the pots? At what rate should I add it?

I'm guessing that this calcitic lime is similar to using ground oyster shells, which are also made up of mostly calcium carbonate (CaCO₃).

When should cuttings be uncovered? I am sure I uncovered one too early, other looks good, but still covered.
