Fiat 500 Owners: "Check Running Lights" Issue – Troubleshooting and Solutions

Edit: the fix for me was replacing the brake/taillight bulb with a P21/5W bulb. When the headlights are turned on, the -taillights also illuminate in the back with the 5W filament, so be sure to check those! I replaced the bulbs with a Philips 12499 P21/5W, but also Sylvania 7528 or HELLA 7528 should be fine also, they are all BAY15d base double filaments. For my situation, I was entirely at fault, when a brakelight went out I put a P21 in, which did NOT have the 5w taillight so that's why it never came on. Luckily someone told me my taillight was out which was the clue.

----
Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a lot of us Fiat 500 owners have been dealing with the frustrating ā€œCheck Running Lightsā€ warning, and many of us are still struggling to find a clear solution. I wanted to create a space for us to come together, share our experiences, and hopefully help each other fix this issue.

What This Post is For:

  • A step-by-step checklist for troubleshooting the "Check Running Lights" warning.
  • A place for users to comment with their experiences and potential solutions.
  • Most importantly, if you find a fix, please share it here so we can all benefit!

Things to Check (Troubleshooting List):

  1. Check the Bulbs:
    • Ensure that all bulbs (especially running lights and sidelights) are working correctly. The Fiat 500 has two running lights and four sidelights (two front, two rear). Sometimes the warning can appear even if only one light is dim or intermittent.
    • Also check the taillight P21/5W bulbs. The 5W taillight is part of the "running lights", so can also be a problem. This is the same bulb as the brake light.
    • Something else to check: the fact that r5w bulbs in the tails instead of r10w also causes the error
  2. If you have separate tail lamp bulbs (instead of combined with breaks), these must be 10w. If you use r5w bulbs instead of r10w this can bring up the error! Swapping bulbs to correct r10w cleared the error. Thank you for this tip, user/jtq4u42/
  3. Inspect the Sockets:
    • Check the condition of the light sockets. Corrosion or a loose connection could be the culprit.
  4. Check the Wiring:
    • Look for any frayed or damaged wires leading to the running lights. This can sometimes cause an intermittent connection.

How to Change the Bulbs:

If you need to replace the bulbs, here are step-by-step guides to help:

Still Stuck?

I’ve personally replaced the bulbs and am still seeing the "Check Running Lights" warning, and I can't figure out why. If anyone has suggestions or has found a fix, please let me know!

Aftermarket Collision Detection

I really want a fiat 500c but the USA doesn’t have the modern cabriolets and the used models don’t have collision avoidance / detection systems. I’m thinking this will be a deal breaker as my current car has one and it’s helped so much in the past 3 years 😢

Tire pressure light on

I have the 2014 Fiat 500 Sport. My tire pressure warning light came on about a week ago. I went to put air to the correct PSI and almost all the tires immediately registered as being the correct PSI and my light hasnt come off. Anyone else heard of this happening and what should I do?

A couple of months ago I talked about changing up the rims. I decided to go ahead and paint them white! I think it looks very Bonita on the street šŸŽ€ Marshmallow stands out even more now, and looks pretty clean šŸ˜Ž

but keeping those white rims clean is another storyšŸ˜‚

I still want those heart shaped rims, but emergency called and I had to dig into my money that I saved up for them🄲 it’s ok, I can wait…!

Help Needed! Anyone have a good source for axles?

I'm replacing my CV axles and all my normal car part suppliers don't carry both sides for some reason. So far, the cheapest place I found with the right parts is the dealership, and they want $750 for the pair. Normally, I'd expect the full half-shaft to be about $200 on the expensive side.

Why are Fiat axles so expensive even?

Looking For Fiat 500 1957 Edition!! šŸ’š

I have been searching every car website multiple times a day looking for a light green Fiat 500 1957 edition HARDTOP and I'm hoping someone here has one for sale, knows someone who does, or has ideas on what else I can do. At this point, I'm not even picky on how many miles it has or the year or anything, but this is my dream car and I want her so bad 😭 I have found very few 1957 editions, and they are all convertibles which is the one thing I do not want. There is one in celeste blue, but I got an estimate on how much it would cost to wrap it in the green color and it's like 30% of what the car is worth šŸ’” Also, I'm in Oklahoma but I'm 100% willing to pay to have this car shipped to me. And if y'all have ideas on changing the color for cheap, I am all ears! (Honestly even considering trying to do it myself... but super worried i'll F it up šŸ’€).

Mile achievement unlocked

Nothing spectacular, but after recently paying off my 2013 Sport two weeks ago, I'm unlocked a bonus achievement of 100k miles. I drove around my little community for the last 45 miles today because I didn't want my spouse to borrow my car and be the one to hit it. Lol.

Weird dash light circus. Won’t start. Suggestions on cause?

I’ve attached a few snaps from the longer video- 2015 Fiat 500.

Car clicks like the engine is trying to start but won’t turn over. Then I get this massive dashboard light circus telling me every system needs checking.
I called my mechanic and am waiting to get a call back.
Since it won’t start I fear I’ll be getting a tow.

Is this something so basic like spark plugs? The battery was replaced relatively recently.

Manual Trans issues?

I have a 2012 500 pop sport? (Has a sport button on the dash.) It has a manual transmission that operates fine at times, but other times it doesn't want to go into gears. Sometimes, it'll grind trying to get into reverse. My BF thinks the clutch grabs too low, but the shop (not a dealer) says it feels fine -that every clutch is a little different (bf has a 2012 Abarth).

Anyone have the same issues? If so, did you get it fixed and if so, what was the fix? Tyia

Oh, and it reads over 180k on the odometer, but it had an engine replacement prior to me buying it (used engine). I'm assuming the transmission has 180k + on it.

Question??? Garage says I'd need a new exhaust in 2-3 Months, are these lines cracks?

Thumbnail

Hi all, recently had my front tyres and alignment done.

The garage said I'd need a new exhaust as there's cracks in the 'back box'? And it's leaking apparently? The exhaust does sound like it's 'blowing' a little bit.

Apologies for the poor photos, these were the best I could get. There does appear to be lines on what I assume is the back box of the exhaust.

Is the garage right in what they said?

Today's excercise... vacuum pump

Vacuum pump was leaking, turns out not the gasket from the housing. Picked up a replacement from Rock Auto and swapped it out this afternoon. Big engine cleanup and detail afterwards... and forgot to take after and before pics. Fail engine bay was filthy, probably never cleaned since new. Was a one owner when we picked it up for my daughter.

Simple job overall.

How do you take out this high pressure valve core?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

2012 Fiat 500 (500C Lounge, if that matters).

The AC was blowing hot air despite charging up with the refrigerant, so I did a dye test. No leaks were found except a splatter on the AC compressor. Upon inspecting, I noticed this bubbling on the high pressure valve attached to the compressor (in the video).

I bought the valve core (picture here), but I could not take the valve core out. None of the sockets, including 16-points and A/C sockets, worked, so I'm stuck. The valve core is nearly circular with rounded heads, unlike bolts. I asked several mechanics, and they could not take it out either.

WIthout tampering with surrounding parts near the AC compressor, how would you take this out?

Help Needed! Keep getting Cylinder 3 misfire despite replacing spark plugs and ignition coil

Hi!

I keep getting the check engine light coming up on my car, along with the start/stop light. We've used a diagnostic on it and it said "cylinder 3 misfire" so got new spark plugs and the error codes went away.

Managed to drive around for 3 hours or so before the check engine light came back on again, same code for cylinder 3 misfire.

Purchased a new coil pack, error codes went away, drove around again yesterday and as I was on my way home the engine light came on again! Says about cylinder 3 AGAIN šŸ˜”

Does anyone know what could be causing this or had the same thing happen? The cylinder has had a new spark plug, the entire ignition coil has been replaced. Both times the error gets cleared but then comes back!

I've just passed my driving test but have had the car for 18 months and never had issues when I've driven it around. Typical the issues start once I can actually drive independently 🤣

Update on gluing the rag top down on a 500C

I came here for a while ago for info on re-gluing the rag top to the cross bars on a Fiat 500c. One fairly common suggestion I saw on the web was to remove the old adhesive. That seemed like such a chore with no perceived benefit in my view, so I decided to try it on just the rearmost bar with just cleaning the contact points on the cross bar and the fabric top really well with a rag and 99% isopropyl alcohol. I noticed that as I was applying the 3M 08001 yellow adhesive, it was dissolving the old adhesive and blending in with it so I went ahead without bothering to remove it. There wasn't enough on the fabric to matter.

  • One bar at a time looks like the easiest way to do it.
  • Just open it enough for easy access to the rear bar and put something in the opening to hold the fabric up. I used a long box about 12x6x20 as my top was broken free from all cross bars. A helper is nice to have.
  • Clean and apply the glue to the cross bar and the fabric where the old glue was.
  • Let the glue become tacky per instructions
  • Press the fabric in place firmly, pushing it towards the front of the car, starting in the center and working to each side.
  • Once attached, quickly close the roof while the glue is still somewhat flexible.
  • Once closed tightly, again firmly press the fabric down onto the cross bar all the way across several times
  • EDIT: Be aware that as you glue the fabric to more crossbars, eventually you may not have enough space under there to apply the glue to the crossbar AND the fabric. Very tight for the last two if working from back to front when all are loose. On the last bar or two at the front I don't see how I can get the glue on the fabric and the bars, so I am going to try a bit of extra glue just on the cross bar strips, press the fabric down and close the top / add weights and hope it holds when cured. If those last two bars eventually fail I may have to remove the whole top and redo it later.
  • Though the instructions say nothing about clamping or weights being required, I laid some 1 pound lead bars all the say across the support bar to keep the two pieces in good contact while the solvent fully evaporates.
  • EDIT: The instruction on the box as well as on the 3M website say nothing about how long after gluing before putting into service, which I found strange. If you click more information on the 3M website it says to let it cure 24 hours.
  • So far so good on the one bar. I will do the next one in line moving from rear to front, waiting a day for it to cure then do the next one until all are done

I had one of the silver metal fingers that was loose in its plastic slot, so am considering gluing that in with CA glue so I could remove it later if I needed to with acetone. Is there a better method that still allows disassembly or can you take the roof completely apart without undoing those metal spring pieces?

Help Needed! Ticking Noise in Engine

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi!

I’ve been having a multitude of problems with my car recently, as in I had warning lights come on intermittently (I have posted about it before I believe) but hasn’t come on in over a week since I cycled my new battery.

I took it to a garage who told me to seek out an electrics garage based on the codes, but my car unfortunately broke down and the AA came out to sort it, in the process he cleared the codes as he assumed it was related to the check engine that came on from restarting my car (it would start but wouldn’t crank on a hot day, it would stutter and he accelerated it to get it going again, his diagnosis was that the cranking had flooded the injectors with fuel so they couldn’t spark to start). The electrics garage therefore couldn’t find anything wrong except for a low oil pressure warning, which only comes up through the master warning triangle light, not during normal driving as the red oil lamp light.

Anyway, I’m super paranoid to drive my car as I’m convinced something is wrong with it and it will just conk out on me at the worst possible time and I was listening to it with the bonnet open with my mum (as you can hear in the video lol) and just wondering whether this ticking noise is normal? It’s a Fiat 500 S Twinair 2014.

It has for a major service booked in for next week, so just wondering whether it could just be time for an oil change as it’s sufficiently topped up.

Thanks :)

Question??? Android Auto Unit - Steering Wheel Controls?

Hi all,

I'm about to receive a Fiat 500s that has the blue&me feature, however, I've just seen that it doesn't support media playback. For this reason I want to get one of those android auto radio upgrades and it doesn't seem too hard, but I also wanted to ask if it would be possible to use the steering wheel controls as well?

Any and all help appreciated šŸ‘šŸ¾

Anyone have a Fiat loving (and knowledgeable) Mechanic in SoCal??

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hey! I need a mechanic who knows Fiats. I've had not so great luck, and she's old (she looks young though, ha!), and I want to build a relationship with someone trustworthy in SoCal (I'm near Pasadena), who KNOWS Fiats and will not roll their eyes, call her a 'Fix It Again Tony', or tell me how hard (wahhhhhšŸ‘¶šŸ½) it is to fix Fiats, or any other Fiat-hating bull. (So weird how so many mechanics hate Fiats, they're cars that can be fixed, so learn how to fix them...)

Anyway, I need a new gas tank installed (no, it's not that valve that everyone says it is, I've already had this replaced, no dice). Maybe some of you have had issues with difficulty filling up your tank. I won't say it's common, but it's not uncommon, as others have had this issue I've read about. It's an expensive fix, but I gotta get it done. And I want it done right. I also want someone to have a look at her and make sure everything else is fine. I love her and I want her to keep kicking.

Anyone have a mechanic they like in the L.A. Pasadena area who I can trust? The last guy almost killed her by forgetting to connect the radiator hose. Yeah.

Thanks!

2012 Fiat door handle nightmare

My 2012.Fiat 500 has developed a terrible habit. Door handles keep breaking. I've replace the driver side two times, the passenger 3 times, and I'm mostly through repairing the trunk so I can use it for the first time since I bought it in 2020. I got the last passenger door handle.off Amazon as it was the only place to find it at a reasonable price. That one won't fit the holes, so I put the only one back in and the door worked for a few weeks. Then it disconnected inside the door AGAIN and I need to fix it again.

I would really like to use ALL the doors in my car. Tips and tricks to do this repair so it stays repaired? Love my FIAT it has been good to me and I try to keep her well maintained but these door handles are driving me to distraction.

Thanks

Question??? 500C soft top fabric separating .anyone fixed this successfully?

Thumbnail

2015 Fiat 500C and overall the top works great, doesn’t leak, and opens/closes normally.

The only issue I’ve found is that the outer burgundy fabric appears to be separating from the black foam backing right near the front latch. It looks like the adhesive has let go in this one area.

I’ve attached a few photos showing what I’m talking about. Any advice or pictures of your repair would be greatly appreciated! Let me know if these pictures suck if you need to see better ones
