Personal ‘It’s never too late to be what you might have been’
Convicted of two counts of 2nd degree burglary and grand theft in 2002 (18 yrs old). For some reason I (M 44) wasn’t given a suspended imposition even though this was my first felony charge. Was granted executive clemency by Governor Rounds of South Dakota in 2014 and all of my rights were restored. I was recently selected for jury duty and out of 50 jurors I was chosen to sit on the jury. During ‘voir dire’ I shared about my past convictions, views on police, county attorney, etc. and answered honestly. It’s very interesting being on this side of the criminal justice system. It’s difficult at times because it brings back a lot of things from my past but mostly I’m so grateful for choosing a new path and sitting on a jury makes me feel like I’ve fully restored my place back in society. It’s so good!

Question What can my dad do
Hello! I’m not a felon but by dad is currently serving time in prisión for some white collar crime. I think wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud .
He has a BA in sociology and a MA in criminology ( ironic I know) . He is also finishing a paralegal course.
He is hopefully getting out soon and they say he needs a W2 job. He is not really a blue collar guy . I know lots of construction companies and things of that nature hire felons.
Is his education to waste? Is there anything relevant to his field he can peruse realistically.
Thank you!

Remembering the road to getting clean
The last time I got caught by the cops, was the tipping point to finally getting clean. My drunk mother turned me into the cops while I was at her house, I had been running for over a year. I ran again and they found me bc I hadn't managed to get far. I'm not going to disclose what insanity ensued that first 10 minutes after I saw the cop car but just know it helped back my mother up on what she did next because Before I even got to the police station my mom had a judge awake in the middle of the night to slap a 96 hour old on me. I sat in jail exactly one night bc that hold went out, one county that had a warrant on me dropped it completely the other agreed to sit on theirs so I could go receive "mental evaluation" and treatment. The county that "sat" on their warrant is the one that picked me up from the county I was in to go to see if they needed to admit to the psych ward I remember sitting there with the officer and telling him "I promise you, they are keeping me" how did I know this? Bc this is the exact tactic my mother had used when I was 19 to get me clean the first time she made up whatever she had to to get a protective order on me and put me in an institution. I was now 32 about to turn 33. They did in fact keep me. I was there for ten days. I was able to come down in a safe environment. The day they transferred me back I called her and told her I was there but she already knew she said she was on her way and this was my hail Mary, I was coming home, I was going to rehab, and we were going to face whatever came out of my court cases I agreed bc there was nothing I wouldn't do to keep from staying in this particular hell hole of a jail. And I had already decided in the psych ward that I was ready to get my shit together and that I was tired of being homeless cold or hot and hungry that I just wanted a normal life back. I knew this likely meant going back to prison for at least 4 years. My mom slapped the cash bond down got me out and sent me to rehab. Bc of the whirlwind speed of which my mom did everything probation and parole was never informed I had been picked up so no p&p hold was ever sent out on me. We got a lawyer. On a random whim, she made me stop by a factory here in town and I walked in to a mass hire event I'm still at that job. I faced court. In one county probation and parole was informed they had found me as the judge was reinstating me, which made the probation officer very visibly irritated bc I had managed to slip through a crack. I know this bc of how many times she said absconded. Near the end of it it was likely I was going to prison for the other county as they would not offer me a plea deal bc I had been such a pain in the ass for this court. (Kept violating probation and running) The week before court I went to grandparents and my sisters graves knowing I wouldn't visit for awhile and prayed said just keep me out of prison mom can't handle me going back to prison I'll never touch meth again I'll do whatever the court asks and I'll get my shit together just pls not prison I genuinely believe it will kill mom. She was battling alcoholism herself and it had hit a critical point and I knew she would drink herself to death if she had to worry everyday about me in prison. I went to court, my lawyer met me at the entrance of the court room with a plea deal (anybody who doesn't believe in divine intervention, I have seen it) 20 days in jail I could do on the weekends so not mess with my new job. I've kept my end of the bargain. I have never touched meth again. Full transparency I smoke marijuana but that's the best treatment for the things wrong with me such as anxiety and cptsd. 4 and half years later I'm clean, promoted at work, my own place, a car, a slightly tight but more comfortable than I've been in decades life, no legal troubles. How i got here, was such random circumstances of chance, and my mother's intuitions. If she hadn't gotten the warrant dropped in one county, hadn't had me out in the psych ward, hadn't done things exactly the way she did it probation and parole would have been informed of my arrest and I would have had a hold on me for absconding and violating probation in two counties after already violating and running several times. I would have gone directly from the jail cell to prison, no court date. Because of how she did it i did not end up back in a system that would have spit out a more terrible version of myself like it did the first time when I was only there for 7 months. Sometimes the craziest way back is that way for a reason.
Side note my mother got clean in June, 3 months after me, right when at my last court date, something tells me she made a deal with the universe too.

Discussion We just got back together- after he served a 17 year bid.
I'm now realizing just how absolutely screwed I actually am being in this relationship and allowing him to enter my world too deep and way too quickly. He had it in his head that he steps in and is immediately the MAN of the house - wanting to be the one handling certain things at home to help me get a job so we can begin building together.
Well, he paroled in later November and began working in December at Taco Bell..
He never got his GED over those 17.years nor.did.he pick up a trade..
He's totally dependent on my vehicle i-f I expect him to make moves and get to work I really have no choice.
Upon moving in I was promised he'd split the bills and hed be giving me 150.a week so I can get some clothing and go tanning and get my nails done.
Now, none of that is happening
He's not contributing - paid 3 bills total so far.
He ONLY has 2 bills to save for and pay yet it's me who paid it after it got turned off!!.
He's messing up my personal bills and my credit score because come to find out he's extremely irresponsible and does not know what the hell he's doing.
He thought they're working 27 hours a week which is fine. My parents have not been shy about lending US money and it's like he stands there with his hand out having no problem feeling no bad feelings about borrowing from them.
He's a home mechanic and promised me that he would do the upkeep and the fixing on my car that it needed. But, he's managed to do is put mileage on it that is already triple of what I was putting on it per year in the matter of 6 months
Everything that he does do that's the right thing is because I bitch or pushed him to do it and explain to why it should be done. He expects to be treated like a man and literally behaves like a toddler what I'm trying to communicate with him and it becomes a screaming match.
Mind fucking gaslighting and confusing me the ways that affect me mentally being around him and making me for sure I need to get away which is where the problem lies.
He is a stalker for sure. He's not going to go without a fight. I'm going to probably have to have him removed and he's not even supposed to be living here or I can live just the roof over my head.
Haven't even had money to go get my haircut and it has just been going out for 6 months.
I'm literally drowning every single day as it continues and it seems like there's no end insight except for me exiting the relationship.
What I haven't mentioned so far is the bigger problem and that is him and his anger issues. I grew up being around. An angry man who slammed things around and I was afraid of. Since being in prison and seeing the things that he saw and being treated how he was time and time again for 17 years it has changed him of course.
What that said I didn't sign up for this! Can we talk on the phone for almost 2 years straight and it never came out then it really just started a couple months ago. He can't handle the smallest of tests, if I asked him to repeat what he said he will flip the fuck out like it's a huge deal and I'm really bothering him or I'm stupid and he gets angry about everything.
Refusing to reward negative behavior I ended up on inviting him on a family vacation for the summer. There's no way I'm bringing him there's no way rewarding him he's going to sit home and think about the crap he doing and work while I'm gone and hopefully pay some bills or get parts for my car.
I won't even write in it at this point because we don't feel safe and it makes my anxiety go through the roof.
May is your hair is that I feel completely stuck. I do fear him when he is in heart broken mode or angry mode. I do fear what he's capable of I know what he's capable of because I know it's past in fall and I feel like I'm in a huge mess and I don't see a way out of it myself so I'm reaching out all day maybe somebody else has better ideas.

Hey guys
I can’t say that I know what you’re going through but to an extent I can. I did spend a month in jail working in the kitchen, but I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have to be longer and out of touch with everything so just wanted to reach out and show my empathy, but sometimes we just need a friendly person to talk to without judgment or discretion.

Personal misdemeanor DUI-NV
so, my bf (28M) received his 1st DUI in January 2026. i bailed him out bc he said he was going to rehabd, but he was sentenced to drug counseling n outpatient. well, he did groups through the HOPES program and has only had [3] dr appointments to get a buprenorphine shot, but never actually did the drug counseling/therapy. he told me he has been on the waiting list since March. he was also sentenced to take DUI classes and to get an interlock device installed in his car-which he did not do either of those. he has also had multiple dirty tests. please note this is over a 6-7 month time frame.
he was arrested last week due to a warrant that was apparently active since April 29 for non-compliance w/ drug counseling. neither of us knew about it despite him having a few run ins w/ the cops. they have him going to court this coming week for an order to show cause. his program sent over the 3 appointments he had, but that's all the information they have on him about this situation so.
i'm not really sure what he wanted me to ask specifically, but i think i put down all the main info so somebody could give me feedback. he's been in n out the system for 10yrs atp n he is considering just doing his time instead.
*idk if this is considered legal advice? im more so looking for other ppl's experiences if they've dealt w DUIs or have gone through a similar situation*

News Give Fully Rehabilitated Youth a Second Look: Pass Virginia's Juvenile Parole Reform
True public safety requires more than incarceration; it requires a bridge back to the community for those who have achieved total rehabilitation. Mr. Russell’s extraordinary 26-year infraction-free record in a maximum-security environment is proof that he possesses the maturity, self-discipline, and character to be an immense asset to our communities.
Marquis’s deepest desire is to use his lived experience to reshape public safety and guide at-risk individuals toward rehabilitation. We are ready to stand on the front lines of advocacy with him. Upon his release, our coalition is fully prepared to integrate Marquis into our ongoing work to champion successful reentry, reduce recidivism, and mentor youth across Virginia.
The Goal:
We, the undersigned residents of Virginia, call on the General Assembly to pass the Juvenile Offender Parole Bill to create a fair mechanism for reviewing the sentences of individuals who have proven complete rehabilitation after being sentenced as youth.
Why This Matters:
Our justice system must recognize that teenagers have a unique capacity for growth and maturity. When we sentence children to decades in adult prisons, we cannot simply throw away the key and ignore who they become.
Marquis Russell is a prime example of why our laws must change. Sentenced out of James City County in 2002 for an offense committed as a teenager, he faced a lifetime behind bars. Over the last 26 years in a high-stakes, volatile prison environment, Marquis has maintained a perfect, 100% infraction-free disciplinary record. He has dedicated his life to personal growth, educational programming, and mentoring younger men to keep them out of trouble.
The reckless teenager from 2002 no longer exists. Marquis Russell is a model citizen inside a model prison. Keeping him—and others like him—incarcerated costs taxpayers thousands of dollars a year without increasing public safety.
We demand that the House and Senate Courts of Justice Committees pass juvenile parole reform. We must judge people by their capacity for redemption, not just by the worst mistake of their youth.

Opinions wanted
I'm 37 from Melbourne Victoria, I was just released from prison a week ago I've been in and out since I was a child, Not for anything people would consider Violent or Bad, well I don't see myself as a bad person but ive lost 14 of the last 17 years inside. This time I said I would do whatever it takes to get things right but, I walked out my only possessions were the clothes on my back I have no family, no real friends and no photo ID when being released the agency's will pay for a few days in the worst hotel in the city, Centrelink gives you $400 and I had a few hundred from prison, now the few days are up, I have absolutely no idea what to do or where to go it seems impossible. I don't like the word
institutionalised but I don't know how you find a place to live with no ID and No Money, I would like to hear peoples opinions everyone has a story and this is myn right now

Why doesn’t life in prison or death deter criminals from committing crimes?
I don’t understand some of the crimes I read about in the news where some people have no regard for human life.
If shooting someone could potentially land you in prison or death (retaliation), why would you continue living that lifestyle?
Almost every inmate being interviewed will advise others not to pursue the same path they took as they made a grave mistake. Yet.. none of this seems to deter people from being more violent.
