Erhu Learning Resources in English (Compilation)

Hey guys, I initially compiled these links for the Discord, but thought to share it here as well. I still haven't received my first erhu yet, so I can't advice which resources are better. My goal was to gather as many as possible since I won't be able to find a local teacher where I live. I might make a similar post for Chinese resources later too.

If you know other materials, please share them in the comments as well :)

1. EMTV (Eason Music TV)

A series of instructional videos from the most recommended store in Singapore. Basic setup and tuning, bowing, troubleshooting tips, comparisons between different types/manufacturers of erhu, etc.

2. Beginner Erhu Course by Eason

An online course for beginners that's like an electronic book with chapters. It's free now even though store pages say it costs $49. Covers pretty much everything a newbie would need: parts of the erhu and their significance, setting up/tuning, sitting posture, bowing, numeric scores, left hand position, D and G scale, simple tunes to learn and practice.

3. Learning Erhu from Scratch: A Course by Xuetangx (also here)

Found this online course just today. It's also free to join, you just need to register. Videos come with English subtitles and there are even quiz questions. Donno why there are two separate courses, the contents seems to be identical. I enrolled in both just in case.

Chapters include: Introduction of Erhu; Numbered Musical Notation; Posture and Bowing; Tuning, Mode, Stopping Strings and Playing in D major; Long and short bowing and Rhythm variation; Legato; Techniques of the Little Finger; Interpretation of Music Pieces; Common Rhythms in Erhu Playing; G/D positions

4. Books by Patty Chan

Seems like the only decent self-study books out there, with good reviews (unlike those by H.H. Lee). Unfortunately there's no eBook/Kindle version, but if you're in US/Europe, you can order it in paperback.

First few pages of Bridging the Gap can be previewed in Google. She also has a YouTube channel with some lessons.

5. Follow Me to Learn the Erhu (by Yao Wei)

Not sure how credible the author is, but there are 72 pages with some basic information in English, plus some simple notes (not jianpu though). The link above has a poorly scanned PDF (but still readable).

6. Cathy Yang Erhu 101

7. ErhuLessons (plenty of free lessons by Ling Peng)

8. Videos by Sharon Erhu

She's also active here on Reddit and in the Discord :)

9. Sun Hui Erhu (short but useful tips)

10. Three useful videos by Jiebing Chen

11. Zhengyun Qin Guan forums

A true gem for all erhu lovers where people discuss traditional Chinese instruments (including erhu) since 2004. If you register there, it might take a few days for your account to be activated. But you can browse all threads without it.

12. Eliott Tordo - Learning the Erhu as a Westerner

A video by a French player who started to learn erhu in 2015 and grew his YT channel by creating music videos with cover songs. Not much info here, but still an interesting perspective of a westerner who self-learned the instrument.

13. Paid online courses and tutors

I can't vouch for any of these (I don't plan to take them myself), but here's what I found in Google:

Which one to choose

Hi everyone! I want to get started with learning erhu. I'm a musician and I'm seeking to reach a very good level of playing. My budget is around 1000€. So I searched on eight tone stores and I have these two in mind.

The thing I wanted to ask is if the 200€ difference is makes a big difference on the sound quality?

Thank you in advance!

No tail piece

I picked up a Erhu yesterday and I don’t see any way to connect the strings to the bottom. I could barely find any information on the tailpiece. I don’t even know if that’s the right name. it’s something I got at a antique shop for $50 so I’m fine with it just being decorative, but I would love to fix it and play it.

Found this Erhu at a local shop for €173 – what do you think?

I just found this Erhu at a local shop here in Germany for €173. These are the photos they sent me. Could you let me know if this looks like a decent instrument for a beginner? I’m specifically worried about the quality of the snakeskin.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

can anyone identify this instrument and maker mark?

This erhu instrument was left randomly on my property by a trespasser. I did not encounter the trespasser, I just discovered what they left behind. They also left a broken German clock from the mid 20th century (according to Claude ) and a jean jacket and a shawl from a hotel in Puerto Vallarta. Very random. No name tags or phone numbers or any other personally identifying ownership information was found on any of these items. I would love any help identifying this instrument and the maker and any opinion as to the value of it. If it's worth anything I will either donate it to a music school or possibly sell it although I really don't need an extra project right now. If it's lower quality I will probably take it to Goodwill. Both strings are operational and the bow appears to be in good condition. But this is not an instrument I know how to play or know much about it all. Thanks for any help.

buying advice for erhu in germany

hey guys(reddit keeps deleting my posts last time im gonna try this),

i wanted to try learning the erhu for a while now but it's kinda expensive here in germany and I don't have a big budget. my chinese friend said beginner models are like 40 euros on taobao but shipping with a proxy makes it way too expensive.

i tried alibaba but most of them write in the product descriptions that they don't ship to DE probably because of the real python skin and missing CITES certificates.

now i saw this one in the pictures and many where the listing almost looks the same on aliexpress for 70€

the thing is they completely hide the material of the membrane in the description (prob to bypass filters) but in the photos it straight up looks like real snake skin.

im super worried that german customs will intercept it. if its real python they will just destroy it and maybe even fine me. and even if its fake pu leather, what if customs holds it because it looks too real and i have to prove its plastic?

did anyone from the eu/germany ever order one of these cheap aliexpress ones? are they usually synthetic? does the customs care or do they just pass through?

appreciate any help 🙏

Hey yall,

After a few years, I've decided it's time to sell my Erhu. I haven't been playing it as much as I used to, and I'm trying to free up some space, so I'd rather it go to someone who will enjoy and use it.

The listing includes:
Erhu
Method book
Extra strings
New bow

If anyone here is interested i'm selling it via eBay I'm not very sure if links will be a problem on here I know people can be cautious about them which is totally fair, so if you're interested, send me a DM and I'll share the listing with you.

Beginner erhu learning help please

Hi everyone! I just started learning how to play the erhu a few days ago, and I'm starting to develop a blister on the side of my left hand palm, right below the first joint of my index finger. Is this normal, or am I holding the erhu neck incorrectly? This only started happening after I began frequently practicing moving my hand to play higher notes.

Can you use a violin bow on erhu?

Has someone tried and can tell if its possible to play fluently with a non erhu bow, like from a violin or a cello?

The film tells similar regretful love stories of two generations and interprets fate and destiny. Even if true love is missed, genuine affection can last across time. If love is destined, temporary separation and regrets are all arranged by fate, and sincere feelings will eventually lead to a happy reunion. It praises pure, restrained love that transcends years.

This piece takes misty rainy Jiangnan as its core imagery. Through the soft scenery of water towns shrouded in drizzle, it expresses melancholy over changed times and lost love. It conveys quiet longing and gentle sorrow for bygone years, telling a story of missed fate between parted lovers who meet again yet cannot stay together.

Hi! I'm just wondering wheter the khuuchir is the same as the erhu or a different instrument?

Wikipedia says that the khuuchir is the ancestor to the modern day erhu, but does not mention wether the modern day versions are the same. However what wikipedia does do is use a picture of an erhu and does not give a picture of a khuuchir, in videos of khuuchir playing on youtube it looks like the khuuchir is the same as an erhu, so my question is, is khuuchir an instrument in its own right or just the mongolian name of what in chinese is know as an erhu?

The central theme of Painted Heart, the theme song of the movie Painted Skin, explores tangled love and obsession between humans and demons. It conveys that people are often captivated by physical beauty yet overlook sincere hearts. True love lies not in appearance, but in genuine devotion. The song depicts lonely longing, unrequited love, tolerance and sacrifice for the one you love, revealing the pain of emotional obsession and the preciousness of a loyal, unchanging heart amid all suffering and misunderstanding.

Erhu Performance: 《Green Longing》I 二胡演奏:《青青思念》

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Green Longing (also known as Green Rightyu) was commissioned by the Shanxi National Orchestra in 2019. Its creation draws inspiration from the decades-long sand control and afforestation history of Youyu, Shanxi Province. The work eulogizes the perseverance of local people who transformed barren deserts into lush green wetlands, conveying profound affection for the green land and hard-won years.

Beyond its thematic tribute to the spirit of Youyu, the soft, sustained melody carries universal tender longing: yearning for hometown landscapes, reminiscence of bygone days, and endless gentle thoughts for family, old friends and distant beloved ones. The imagery of green represents vitality and lingering memories, as if endless longing drifts across mountains and rivers with the breeze.
