My Advice Confused about Emirates baggage? Here’s everything you need to know about the 7kg limit, 32kg max weight, and "Piece vs Weight" concepts.

✈️ Hand Luggage (Cabin Baggage)

Emirates is generally generous, but if the flight is full, they become the "baggage police." Your allowance depends entirely on your class of service.

Economy Class

  • 1 Bag up to 7kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Premium Economy

  • 1 Bag up to 10kg
  • Max Dimensions: 55 x 38 x 20 cm

Business & First Class

  • 2 Pieces: One briefcase plus either one handbag OR one garment bag.
  • 7kg each (14kg total).
  • Briefcase: 45 x 35 x 20 cm | Handbag: 55 x 38 x 20 cm | Garment bag: 20cm thick when folded.

💡 The Regional Exceptions:

  • India: You are strictly limited to one piece of carry-on. No "bag + laptop" games here; the total size cannot exceed 115cm (L+W+H).
  • Brazil: If you're flying from Brazil, you get a boosted 10kg limit even in Economy.

🧳 Checked Luggage

Emirates uses two different systems. Which one you get depends on your route.

1. The Weight Concept (Most of the World)

Used for flights between Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.

  • How it works: You can check in as many bags as you want, as long as the total weight is within your ticket limit.
  • Allowances: * Economy: 20kg to 35kg (depending on Special, Saver, Flex, or Flex Plus).
    • Business: 40kg.
    • First: 50kg.
  • The Rule: No single bag can ever weigh more than 32kg.

2. The Piece Concept (Americas & Africa)

Used for flights to/from the US, Canada, and Africa.

  • Economy: 1 or 2 pieces (usually 23kg each). Check your fare—"Special" is often just 1 bag.
  • Business/First: 2 pieces (up to 32kg each).
  • The Rule: Total dimensions of each bag (L+W+H) must not exceed 150cm.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is the checked baggage limit 23kg or 32kg? I’m confused. A: This is the big one. On the Piece Concept (Americas), each bag is capped at 23kg for Economy. If you are 24kg, you pay a fee. On the Weight Concept (Europe/Asia), you can have a 30kg limit, but no single bag can be over 32kg.

Q: Can I "pool" my baggage with my family? A: Yes! If you are on the same booking (PNR), Emirates allows families to pool their total weight. If two people have 30kg each, you can bring one 32kg bag and one 28kg bag.

Q: What is the deal with Power Banks and "Smart Bags"? A: Power banks must be in hand luggage only. Smart Bags are only allowed if the battery is removable. If the battery is built-in and can't be taken out, the bag is banned from the flight.

Q: Are liquids still restricted to 100ml? A: Yes. Even with new scanners in some airports, Emirates still requires the standard 100ml containers in a single, clear, resealable 1-litre plastic bag.

Q: What about sports gear (Golf clubs, Skis)? A: Sports equipment is usually accepted as part of your standard baggage allowance. If it’s within your weight/piece limit, there’s no extra charge.

🕵️ The "Reddit" Factor (Strictness)

  • The Laptop Loophole: In Economy, you are technically allowed a "small handbag or laptop bag" in addition to your 7kg bag. However, if your "laptop bag" is a massive tactical backpack, they will count it as your main piece.
  • When do they weigh? If you check in at a kiosk, you might skip the scale. If you go to a human agent, they usually weigh everything. Expect a "Cabin Approved" tag if you’re boarding in DXB.
  • The Gate Scale: On full flights, agents often stand at the boarding gate with a portable scale. If you look like you’re struggling to carry it, you’re likely getting caught.

💎 Pro-Tips for the Savvy Traveler

  • Skywards Status: Silver, Gold, or Platinum members get extra weight (12kg to 20kg extra) or an additional piece for free.
  • Buy Early, Save Big: If you know you're over, buy extra weight online at least 4 hours before your flight. You can get a 50-60% discount compared to airport prices.
  • The "Jacket" Hack: If you're 1kg over in your carry-on, put your heaviest hoodie or jacket on while checking in. They can't weigh what you're wearing!
  • The "Squish" Test: Is your carry-on bulging? If it doesn't fit easily in the overhead bin, a gate agent will spot it.
  • The App Check: Open the Emirates App -> Manage Booking. It will tell you exactly if you are "Weight" or "Piece" concept.
  • Liquids & Batteries: Put your power bank and liquids at the top of your bag for easy access at security.

Safe travels!

Trip Report Dubai Connect as First Class Pax

Had a 9h layover in Dubai at night so decided to get a free hotel by Dubai. From plane to hotel was super well aranged and smooth and very happy with how Emirates handled it. We were given a room in Le Meridien, which I didnt expect, as JW Marriott is usually given to First passenger. I don't complain however because Le Meridien is super close to the airport.

In the morning, we were picked up exactly as arranged, but then were left at the entry of the airport with no further follow up. Departure was from a bus gate and we didn't get much info... They insisted that we take a private bus. We had to wait until the end of boarding, then the bus departed so we boarded last while we actually wanted to board earlier. The departure from bus gates can therefore be improved for Emirates imo.

Help Needed Is it true that when Emirates Airlines websites need flight attendants, AST doesn't recommend any girl over 28 who doesn't have experience in hostess, sales, or waitress face-to-face to the recruiter's CV?

Help Needed Dubai Connect Hotels usually

Hii
I’m flying out of LGW to BLR via Dubai in a week and I opted for a 19 hour layover as I wanted to see some friends. I’m flying Economy and was wondering what are the usual hotels Emirates offers for economy passengers? From what I heard it’s a 2-3 star hotel (pls correct me if I’m wrong). I’ve asked them and they still haven’t confirmed. I do appreciate that there’s still some time for the flight.

If y’all can tell from your experience, I can plan and coordinate with my mates properly based on the area where the hotel’s located!!

Thank youuu :)

So I am travelling from Boston to DXB in premium economy with my SO. Wanted advice on what's better .... Row 14 (first row for premium economy....not sure if any limitations or issues with the seats) or row 15 (has to be in the middle and typically premium economy, we prefer the ones on the sides)

Discussion 48 Hour Transit Visa Rejected, Dubai Connect

Post image
0 Upvotes

Travelling as a family with three young children. All of us are British passport holders except one family member, who holds a Pakistani passport.

We qualified for Emirates Dubai Connect because of our 22-hour layover, but the UAE transit visa for the Pakistani passport holder was refused without any explanation. As a result, we had no choice but to pay a significant amount at the last minute to change our flights and reduce the transit time. I guess think twice to book Emirates from now on.

Help Needed Emirates flights to Dubai with Iranian passport

Emirates customer support told my family they cannot return from Canada > Dubai > Tehran but they can travel from Canada > Dubai > Istanbul but there is no guarantee that they can actually get on board on the flight to Dubai because of their Iranian passports.

They further said we should go to airport in Canada before learning whether they can fly or not. So, we will not know beforehand!!

When I asked how have other passengers handled these return flights booked many months ago, the Emirates costumer support said they have no ideas and have no records about this (!!!unbelievable that they have not been briefed by the airline about this situation!!!). They also were as terse as possible and only replied with yes and no without offering any helpful solution.

Anyways, my family is stuck in this situation. Do you have any updated news if Iranians can have a transit in Dubai?

Help Needed Am I eligible for EU261 compensation from Emirates after being rebooked to arrive 24 hours later?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding EU261 compensation for an upcoming Emirates journey.

My original itinerary is:

Dublin (DUB) → Dubai (DXB) → Adelaide (ADL)

Original scheduled arrival in Adelaide: 23 July 2026 at 20:05

I received an email from Emirates on 19 July at 04:36, around 3 days before departure, saying:

“For operational reasons, your flight has changed.”

They have rebooked me onto another flight, and my new scheduled arrival in Adelaide is:

24 July 2026 at 20:05 - exactly 24 hours later than originally scheduled.

I contacted Emirates and asked about an earlier alternative flight, but they told me this is the only available option. They have also confirmed Dubai Connect/STPC accommodation for the overnight stay in Dubai.

Since my entire journey starts in Dublin, Ireland, would I be eligible to claim €600 compensation under EU261 after completing the journey?

Has anyone had a similar experience with Emirates where a connecting flight was changed for “operational reasons” and you arrived at your final destination 24 hours late? Did Emirates pay the €600 compensation, or did you have to escalate the claim?

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences!

My Advice Important changes to your booking

Hello guys,

Ive recently seen a lot of people posting about changes to their bookings but seeing no actual changes.

This seems to be happening to a lot of people as Emirates seem to be changing their aircrafts or just changing arrival/departure times by 5 to to 10 mins at most.

It happened to me as well and it turned out my arrival time was 5 minutes earlier.

I think they should do a better job with these type of communications to customers as it honestly just seem alarming when its nothing.

I ended up calling the airline to make sure everything is fine since i panicked and it turned out many people received the same so their lines ended up busy and I stayed on the phone waiting for 40 minutes just for the agent to tell me that it's all fine in 5 minutes.

Its honestly just a waste of time so I advise you guys to just check your departure and arrival times for all flight rather than calling.

They really should do better smh.

Help Needed Dubai Airport Layovers

Hello everyone. I will be traveling for Umrah from Karachi with a toddler and while making airline reservations, I was confused regarding DXB layovers. The outbound flight has a 2hr 25mn layover and I might have to travel from concourse C to A. Just wanted to confirm if this time would be sufficient if I want to have atleast 30 mins spare for changing into ihram etc. The next flight will have a 12 hour layover.

Moreover, for the inbound flight i have two options for the same price:
A. All Emirates itenary with a 10hr layover
B. MED-DXB emirates, DXB-KHI flydubai (operated by emirates) with a 3.5 hour layover.
What should I choose here?

Help Needed Regarding hand luggage - are they chill like that?

Flying economy SFO-DXB, when I go to seat selection, almost all seats are available to be picked(might be most have not picked yet), so assuming less crowded plane

Do they really care about how many hand bags you have. Is it possible for one laptop bag and another handbag? Anyone has experience flying from SFO?

Trip Report Emirates HUGE mistakes on my fiances flight!

My fiance is travelling from London to New Zealand. His first flight from London to Dubai was an absolute joke. He had pre-booked seats that he paid for and they messed up and gave his seat to someone else. He had to sit in a middle seat. He is a VERY tall person which is why he chooses extra leg room seats, that he has to pay EXTRA for.

Secondly, his first flight got delayed, which made him miss his second flight. Funny thing is, his second flight was also delayed, which he was told NOT TO BOARD THIS FLIGHT. He could of made that flight... Emirates have clearly sold another one of his seats to someone else. He is now stuck in Dubai until tomorrow for the next flight in which yet again, he is sat in a middle seat even though he paid extra! He has no idea where his luggage is going... He has been treated appallingly... Emirates are supposed to be a good airline...

Emirates will not fix their mistake by atleast bumping him to premium economy. I have had better flights with Chinese Airlines. It makes me and him to never want to fly with Emirates ever again. Absolutely disgusting service from this airline.
