Question How to reduce noise?

I live very close to Ely, and I would like to reduce the noise I hear during the night, as just earlier I was rudely awoken by what I can only assume were two or three teenagers screaming about wendigos and blood moons. I’m unsure if this is a new gothic culture thing with the youths, but I would prefer it if they did it when I wasn’t trying to get some shut-eye.

Question Short term let

My family (parents and 7 year old) is moving to Ely at the end of August but our tenancy doesn’t start until the end of September.
Does anyone know of a short term let we could rent for a month? Ideally 1-2 bed. Can be furnished or unfurnished as we could use our own furniture.
Any leads would be appreciated !

Question Dating in Ely

I moved away from Cambridgeshire for 10 years and I’ve just moved back to Ely, so I don’t have a friend group etc to meet people through. As much as I hate the apps, it’s pretty much the only option these days.

Which dating apps are most used please? Any other suggestions are very much welcome. I’m in my late 20’s if that helps at all.

Question Looking for a couch removal service. Any recommendations?

A couple of stout lads who can carry a heavy couch down a flight of stairs and dispose of it ethically. I don't want to be driving down the A1101 and see my couch in a field!

I could find a mate and have the council take it but it's just easier to hire someone.

Question Anyone playing volleyball around Littleport, Ely or Downham Market? 🏐

Hey everyone!

I'm based in Littleport, Cambridgeshire, and I'm looking for people who play volleyball around Littleport, Ely, Downham Market, or anywhere nearby.

I'd love to get back into playing this summer. Volleyball is my favourite sport (and honestly, the only one I play 😄). If you have a casual group, weekly games, or know of any local courts or clubs, I'd really appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

A little about me:

🏐 Love playing volleyball

👨‍🍳 Enjoy cooking

🚴 Love cycling and exploring new places

I'm happy to join friendly games with beginners or experienced players. If there's a WhatsApp group or regular meetup, feel free to comment below or send me a DM.

Looking forward to meeting some fellow volleyball players!

Discussion We'll be hearing about the new council this week

In case anyone hasn't heard the new single tier councils are going to be announced this week. See the article for a breakdown of the options.

Option A seems like the obvious one - Ely and Cambridge seem to have pretty clear practical and economic links. For some reason our local Council seems to want to get merged in with Peterborough instead, which seems mad to me.

Presumably they think that in the latter they'll get forgotten and left to do their thing, which strikes me as spectacularly shortsighted. Either be joined with one of the wealthiest, fastest growing economies in the country, or Peterborough and a vast rural hinterland.

Genuinely I've got nothing against the Fenlands (something against Peterborough), but from a purely practical perspective it's about local tax bases and levels of need.

Discussion Increase in high street anti-social behaviour?

I've been living close to the high street for a while, and it really seems that recently there's been a sudden increase in what I can only describe, in the nicest way possible, as troubled individuals.

There is a lady there right now with her very large dog, which constantly gets triggered and barks loudly at anyone going by. She is constantly swearing loudly at both people and her own dog, and anyone getting close to her asking if she's okay gets threatened. This has been happening from around 7am to now 9am.

But it's not just her. Over the recent days, there always seems to be someone screaming down the road, or getting into a fight around the hours of 12am to 3am.

Question What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Ely?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like 'Port, The Towny, Stumpy or Little Thet...

incl. nicknames for schools or other institutions etc.

Spotted at St Mary's surgery car park. The most extreme example of what at the time was really a convention of terrible parking.

Question The Chapters, Ely

Long shot:

Anyone recently applied to rent a property at the new The Chapters development? We have but communication has come to a sudden halt and we can’t get through to anyone in the office. It’s so frustrating. Don’t know where we stand and when the move in date will be.

Activities Free community choir show today!

Morning fellow Ely folk!

If anyone is looking for something to do today, there is a free performance by local community choir VocEly at the bowls club, starting at 2pm. No tickets needed, it’s done every summer for friends, family, and the community to round off the year. All are welcome, and it’s family friendly!

The choir do unaccompanied versions of all sorts of songs - pop, folk, shanties, rock! And there’ll be a few solos and small groups today, too.

The bar will be open, and it’s always a fun and friendly afternoon. Feel free to pop in and have a listen!

Thanks!

Question Good, cheap women’s hairdresser?

I have long, thick, curly hair. It’s horrible in this heat. I want to get it cut short, but I would like it cut by someone who actually understands how curly hair acts (I’ve been burnt before by hairdressers who cut it to a certain length when wet then act surprised when it goes much shorter dry). I’m also on a very tight budget - ideally under £40.

I’ve tried booking in at Cambridge Regional College - no one picked up when I rang (I tried multiple times) and I never had a reply to my email. If there’s a certain trick to it, I’d love to know!

In or around Ely is my preference, but happy to drive about 40 minutes.

Thanks!

Question Hairdresser recommendations for long mens hair?

I need to get my hair cut soon. It is long, I would like it to remain long. Can anybody recommend a decent mens/unisex hairdresser in Ely? Surrounding area is OK too, as long as they are easy to get to on the train since I don't own a car.

I'm happy to accept barbershop recommendations if they work well with long hair. But have had a few too many bad experiences where I feel like I've thrown them off by not simply selecting a crew cut out of a book. 😄

Thanks in advance
