Basically to sum up me and my partner separated a few months ago and i was the stay at home dad, so was then tasked with getting the kids into daycare and getting a job and my own place. Alot of change in a short time but that's life. This happend back in January and i spent all the rest of January and into February applying for jobs on indeed, last i checked i had over 200 applications sent in just those few weeks. I got a couple responses but mostly from sales jobs with terrible hours and a long commute.

The only job i managed to find was an insurance agent. But it's 100% commission based pay, and requires a lot of training and practice to actually even sell at all. And i've been doing this for a few months still haven't gotten a paycheque. My savings have run out, but my family have graciously been helping me out with the financial side while i get back on my feet, but the mental stress continuously borrowing money from my family causes cant keep going on.

I have 2 kids in daycare from Mon-Fri and Friday after work to Sunday night / Monday morning would be my time with the kids so i wouldn't be able to work weekends so i need a full-time Monday-Friday day-time job. For me to comfortably live i would need to make about $2500+ per month at minimum.

I had started learning software engineering a few years ago and i've built a few cool things but AI has taken most of the entry level jobs in that area.

I never got to go and get a degree because of the kids so theres that.

I am a good worker, i've never been fired from any job, i can provide many references who would all have good things to say. Most of my work experience is in customer based jobs, i'm polite and genuinely love talking to people its my favourite part of any job i've had. No problem working an 8-10 hour shift, even staying late or coming early if i am able.

I am immigrant (permanent resident) if that matters from Europe, English is my first language.

At this point, I'm open to almost anything that offers stable, full-time income. If you were in my position, what kinds of jobs or industries would you be looking at? Are there any fields that are hiring people without a degree but offer decent long-term opportunities?

Hey everyone,

I'm 22 years old from Prince Edward Island, and I'm looking to make the move to Alberta to start a career in drilling. I've always been interested in becoming a roughneck/floorhand and working on a drilling rig. The work has always appealed to me.

My background is in commercial fishing, where I'm used to long hours, physically demanding work, early mornings, working outside in all kinds of weather, and being part of a crew. Hard work doesn't scare me.

Right now I'm trying to figure out the best way to get started. I'm planning on getting my H2S Alive and First Aid certificates, but I'm wondering:

- Which drilling companies are hiring entry-level floorhands or roughnecks?

- Is it better to apply directly or go through a service company?

- Are there companies that help new hires get their certifications?

- Any advice for someone coming from out east?

- I'm willing to relocate, work rotational schedules, and start as soon as I can.

I'd really appreciate any advice, company recommendations, or contacts you think I should reach out to.

I’m in my 40s and started working shortly after high school. I’ve had a fairly eclectic work history, including various low-level corporate roles, security work, and more recently clerical and administrative for a small business. Some health issues caused me to scale things back for a while, but I’m now trying to find something more stable and build my life back up.

So far, I’ve been keeping an eye on the City of Edmonton, EPCOR, the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada, and AHS. Are there any other large or reliable employers in Edmonton that you think are worth watching?

I don’t have a degree or many official certifications, so I’m mainly looking for positions where experience, computer skills, communication skills, and a willingness to learn might be enough to get my foot in the door. My health currently keeps me from doing heavily labour-intensive work, although if I continue getting healthier, I could see myself enjoying something physical, especially for the CoE parks department.

I realize finding the right position might take some time. Right now, I’m mainly hoping to find something that can stabilize my situation, help me stay housed, and give me somewhere to get healthier. I’m also not able to move outside Edmonton for the foreseeable future.

Ok so yesterday I had a job interview at a rural place, which seemed like a very interesting opportunity, with a very unique product. I was essentially hired after a 3ish hour interview, I dont know if I want to explain the interview or I might disclose too much of the business, anyway, think of it as something of an exam, which I was ok with...except the boss did not stick to the schedule planned, didn't plan the 3 hours appropriately, didn't even let me finish the "exam" before saying she would love me on her team, I didnt have much else to do that day, and was very curious about the products they make, so long story short, I stayed all day...so after a few hours...i had to use the washroom, and the boss lady laughed and told one of the other new ladies to show me where it was...it...was an outhouse. Not a portapotty, an old school, hole in a board, dark AF even in summer day, mosquitoes laden outhouse...with a bowl of water and soap outside...at first I thought i was being entitled but, I also have a health condition that frequently involves joint pain, and I was thinking about using an outhouse outside of a shop, in the several months of winter... this job was also a 45 minute commute each way, and she was not even sure whay to say she would pay me because I hadnt finished the exam she kept interrupting (which was to finish a small hands on project so she could determine competency on machines etc) she also was insistent that i give a 2 year commitment, and talked about putting together a contract. I recently finished a masters, and could definitely use a job asap to pay the bills and have something set up when those student loan payments are going to start, but between the commute, the uncertain pay(there was much talk if ambiguous learning on our own time, which i can understand from the small business standpoint, but it didnt seem like she had a clear directive for what would be or wouldn't be paid...?) I also saw about a dozen safety concerns, including a floor on one side of the shop that was made of large wood board that were bowing and damp and likely rotting.....

So despite being hired on the spot ... on the drive home I was replaying the day and saw dozens of red flags - I have only mentioned the biggest flags- i decided to decline the job offer...i know the market is hard out there... and if this were a job at say, a campground, an outhouse wouldn't surprise me...but this business dealt with projects for high end clients... amongst other very questionable conditions...would you accept a job with only an outhouse for a washroom?
