With the generous permission of your moderator team, I would like to invite you to join a new community dedicated explicitly to the practical execution of historical composition: r/WriteBaroque.

While there are many wonderful spaces for passive listening and music history discussion, our goal is to build an active, hands-on workshop. We focus on the strict mechanics of 18th-century North German polyphony, Italian partimento traditions, Galant style, and strict counterpoint.

To kick off the community, we currently have two collaborative portfolio projects running simultaneously:

1. A Strict 4-Voice Fugue Workshop in C Minor (Focusing on tonal answers and invertible counterpoint).

2. A Basso Continuo / Chaconne Bass Workshop (Focusing on unfigured bass realization and melodic diminutions over a descending minor tetrachord).

This is just the beginning—many more workshops will come! We plan to host regular, rotating challenges covering everything from strict canon writing and dance suites to inventive ornamentation and concerto grosso structures, ensuring there is always a fresh project to work on.

Whether you are an experienced composer, an organist looking to improve your historical improvisation, or a musicology student wanting to put theory into practice, we would love to have your insight.

I use Dorico for my own engravings, but users are welcome to submit ideas using standard text notation, images of handwritten manuscript, or cloud audio renders. I am also hosting interactive mini-lessons directly in the comments for anyone who needs a refresher on specific voice-leading rules.

Is there a subreddit for pipe and tabor? I doubt it but I thought I’d ask. It may be a little niche for its own sub.

Also, if the interest is there, would the mods consider adding flairs? Along the lines of period/tradition of interest, instruments people play (woodwind, strings, percussion etc), maybe even a few specific instruments (lute, recorder, fiddle etc). I just thought it might be a cool edition.

Hi all! I just wanted to share about a lovely program that I've participated in the past couple of years that you might enjoy! The Canadian Renaissance Music Summer School (CRMSS) is a week long course focusing on primarily ensemble singing of Renaissance music. There are three programs every year with one in Ontario in May, one in Prince Edward Island in July, and one in Vancouver in August. The music is themed around a specific country or composer typically. The first year I went we did all Italian music and last year we focused on English music. The team is absolutely fantastic and insanely knowledgeable.
