Was Andy’s position in Stamford real?
If you zoom in you can see that among three of them, Jim was the only one who had Assist. Regional Manager under his name, while Andy who was supposed to be Regional Director in Charge of Sales, which is supposed to be higher than manager, has only his name on it.
So was just Jim their favorite or Andy invented his position?

lol he was just part of the sales staff. No self respecting regional director would grovel to their regional manager the way he did to Josh

If we took his title at face value, Josh would still be his boss
“Regional Director” sounds like he would be in charge of the Regional Managers, but that goes away with the “in charge of Sales” at the end, as it would mean he is only the boss of the other salespeople
If he was a full Regional Director, then yes, he would be Josh’s boss. But Regional Director in charge of Sales only has authority over salespeople

Doesn’t matter. Has director in the title, which is the highest position on a film set.

Well if he wants to get a job for the doc crew, they can take that into account

Do we know for sure that is Andy’s role at Stamford?
I think the first time hearing it is after the merger when he’s sizing up Dwight. Could’ve been a new title after the merger.

Yeah pretty sure he makes it up in that moment in their face off. They do anything to win the arguments in those early rivalry episodes.

It's pretty clear that it's an invented title akin to Dwigt's.

Had the series not started off trying copy the British show 1:1, a suck up character in the mold of Andy to fill the Gareth role would’ve been a great alternative.

came here to say this. I should've learnt my lesson from Debbie Brown.

I think those titles didn’t have a hierarchy in themselves, it’s that Jim was specifically the number two while he was in Stamford and then later Scranton, so he was Andy’s superior. I’ve seen stuff like this happen all the time at my company, in one org a Senior Manager reports to a Principal Engineer, in others vice versa.

u/DustyViljoen 1d ago
Any responsibilities that come with that title?

u/Grumpy-Troglodyte 22h ago
its mostly pay scale related

“It’s not about more or less your pay is just different”

Didn't Charles Miner correctly call out that Jim's position was basically made up as well?
23
u/ResidentialEvil2016 1d ago
Except Jim's wasn't. In the merger episode he was explicitly offered the Number 2 position at the branch.

u/YoungNasteyman 1d ago
Yep, Jim fumbled talking to Charles. But the Job was real, offered by Jan most Stamford collapse.
Whats crazy is... Don't they have an org chart?

u/ResidentialEvil2016 22h ago
There was one episode at least where Dwight said out loud that when Michael was away Jim was in charge and then if Jim was away, he was.

u/Aromatic-Taste2516 don’t ever for any reason do anything to anyone ever 22h ago
That always annoyed me like this is your chance to tell him you actually have a higher position and make more money. Idk if they writers decided it was fake again or if Jim just got nervous.

u/Humansareus 11h ago
That was so annoying btw. I know it’s for comedy but still. Jim claimed his position didn’t come with any responsibilities but it did. He was replacing the manager when hes away, he coordinated work/employees.

Corporate probably just didn't care enough to print out a new custom nameplate for him since Stamford was already sinking. Classic Dunder Mifflin management.

I don't care, Dwight. You all report to me. That's all that matters.

In office culture job titles are meaningless, they only relate to how much you are paid. And that's not about who is paid more, the pay is just different.

Andy wasn't even real. Just a fever dream of Jim's. If you look closely, Andy never interacts with a single other cast member for the entirety of the series.

He was in charge of directing himself to make sales in the region, it that's what you're asking.

So assistant regional manager over see everything: sales, accounting, marketing, IT, HR, etc... Director of Sales typically helps with forecast and analysis of revenue, developing sales strategies and quotas, and works with operations, finance, and marketing to make sure everything aligns (meaning we aren't selling anything at a loss, we can meet this customer's demands, etc...).
The Assistant Regional manager would over see the director in most companies, as they would be able to give the director the resources and assistance to help their goal, that only a manager could give. Hiring a new person, giving money to the director to get more sales, etc...

u/GrizzlyP33 1d ago
Andy, perpetual liar to boost his own stock, lied about this title to boost his own stock.
2
u/chanebap 1d ago
Probably just a change in vendor or policy when ordering the plaques between their hire dates. Name plaques didn’t include titles when Andy or Karen started, but they switched before Jim was hired and didn’t bother to order new name plates for the whole office.

u/SmoothConfection1115 23h ago
I’m willing to bet a paycheck that Josh made the title up for Andy, similar to how Michael made one up for Dwight.
Andy probably asked for something that he could call himself to brag to his parents, etc., so Josh gave him a title way above his position (Since the director title, generally means you’re above managers), that Andy likely put on his business card and email signature.
So probably not a real role. He was just a salesman.

I am sure much like Dwight giving himself the title of "assistant manager to the regional manager" t, was not real, Andy's title was also not real as well.

Andy: Actually, I play Call of Duty

Was any of them real? Cause all they did was play this World War 2 game called Call of Duty.

It was just another made up title. An actual regional director would be higher in the chain than regional manager.

Hate the moment they count “1,2,3” before taking a shot. They do it again in one of the Christmas episodes too. Who does that??!!

Well what’s higher for you: Director or Manager.
Quick follow up: do… you know anything about film?

u/Sure-Appearance-2769 1d ago
It is very obviously a made up title.
A director would never report to a regional manager. It is almost certainly something Andy made up on the spot to outdo Dwight.
At least in Dwight’s case he has Michael sanction the “assistant TO the regional manager” title, but I doubt Andy ever talked to Josh about it.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't an official title, much like Dwight's. At least that's the vibe I got.
