My newest custom: Dolphin Blue

I got a request this week to make a manual for the homebrew port of the Atomiswave's Dolphin Blue. I should point out that running this port of a disc leads to some serious long load times.

Started some mods today for my recently acquired Dreamcast. I did the easy 10% overclock and dual bios. I thought I had some 40mhz oscillators but they were 80. That would’ve been a bit too high. I may just stick with the 10%, but we’ll see. I have the 7mhz osc for vmu overclock already.
I did the piggyback bios method because it’s the chip I had and I’ll only be using it once I finish the ide install for cf. The switch I had fits perfectly next to modem on the side, secured with hot glue. I used some male and female headers as a plug for the switch and some heat shrink around all the connections. I left the wires long but will shorten them after everything else is fit in just to be sure.
I prefer the visuals through s-video on the crt than vga through ossc on big screen. If I had a vga crt, that would be the way.

Trying out some new effects and menu layouts on an actual CRT for Gael Force a new game I'm developing for DC. Super cool looking.

CRT testing has been worth it. There's so many nuances you just don't see on modern displays.

Discussion Where does wanting Sega to return to making console come from?

Post image
391 Upvotes

I'm playing devil's advocate here.

I love the Dreamcast and spend hours playing many of its exclusives. It's a console for arcade gamers.

We can debate why it failed until we're blue in the face. The "Rise and Fall of Sega" has been discussed endlessly.

What I'm curious about is something different.

Where does the desire for Sega to return to making consoles actually come from?

One thing I've noticed is that niche gaming media seems to exploit this desire. Every few months there's another headline teasing that Sega might return to hardware, or an indie developer announces a new Dreamcast release. Those stories generate excitement because many of us want them to be true.

But let's say Sega announces a new console tomorrow.

Then what?

Would you actually buy one?

Would Sega pull Sonic, Like a Dragon, Persona, Virtua Fighter, Super Monkey Ball, Total War, and every other franchise from PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Steam, and Epic to make them exclusive again?

If they don't, what makes their hardware worth buying?

If they do, they're immediately giving up millions of customers and software sales just to build a new install base from scratch.

Then there's the ecosystem.

A modern console isn't just a box that plays games. Sega would need an online service, digital storefront, cloud infrastructure, account system, payment processing, security, customer support, achievements, multiplayer services, developer tools, and backward compatibility. They'd need to convince publishers to support yet another platform.

And as the industry continues shifting toward digital distribution, with even companies like Sony reducing emphasis on physical media, Sega would have to build and maintain an entire digital marketplace. That's a massive investment before selling a single console.

So I keep coming back to the same question:

What problem would a Sega console solve that isn't already solved by Sega releasing games everywhere?

Is what we really miss the hardware?

Or do we miss the era when Sega felt like the industry's biggest risk-taker, experimenting with arcade-style games and ideas that nobody else was making?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, because I honestly don't know what a successful Sega console looks like in 2026. Would you actually want Sega back in the hardware business—or do you just want Sega to feel like Sega again?

UPDATE: thank you all for the civil discussion. For the few that understood the question and have the rational opinion behind SEGA absolutely destroying themselves if they made the console again, thank you. However, it is very apparent that many still have a nostalgia for SEGA a new console regardless of its success rate and damage it would bring to the company.

Discussion Replaying CODE: Veronica after two decades: why did this one completely disappear from my memory?

I played CODE: Veronica sometime around 2003/2004, but going into a recent replay I realized something strange: I basically remembered nothing about it.

I had always thought I had only dabbled briefly, but my memory card said I finished the entire game! The only thing I clearly remembered was the tyrant boss on the plane!

Coming back to it now, I was surprised by how much it feels like a game caught between eras. It has the classic Resident Evil structure, but it also feels like Capcom was already moving toward something different. And it most notably had a different atmosphere than the pre-rendered games, with the more sprawling design making it feel less like the tightly constructed puzzle-box experiences of the earlier games.

I enjoyed a lot about it but I also found myself wondering if it lacks the RE identity I recognize in the earlier games while not having the momentum of the later action-oriented ones.

For people—particularly Dreamcast dreamers—who love CODE: Veronica: what makes it stand out for you? Is it the best "classic" Resident Evil, as reviewers of the era suggested, or is it the awkward bridge between two different versions of the series?

I refuse to believe that, in 2026, after we've seen hundreds of Dreamcast hombrew titles release over the past 25 years, we'd see a headline this out of touch.

The mind boggles.

Discussion what is your favorite canceled dreamcast game?

my favorite is this snowboarding game. i've been really enjoying snowboarding games and the dreamcast unfortunately only had one, but i like it specifically for the graphics, because as you guys know, most games for dreamcast have really simple graphics compared to the other consoles of the generation simply because it was an older console, so very few games seem to have the true graphical technology and visual effects of the 6th gen. but this one seems very 6th gen for me, it feels just as impressive as SEGA Xtreme sports, which is another game that i could say has a 6th gen look.

also, honorable mentions:

planet harriers and gunvalkyrie

Hard to believe what happened

I'm watching old recordings on VHS and I found an episode of Modern Marvels talking about video games. Based on the commercials and TV ads, I'd say October 2000 is when it came out. It was interesting though because they had a quite a bit of the show using the Dreamcast for visuals. Then they said:

"Sega's Dreamcast's American release in 1999 sold 250,000 Units within 24 hours, and 400,000 in 5 days. Sega Dreamcast is responsible for the single largest day day in retail of any kind of entertainment experience ever: $97 Million in one single day of sales."

They mentioned how that was 3x more than Phantom Menace sales which was the previousrecord holder. They also had a section dedicated to talking about the "movie experience" of Sega's Shenmue as the future of video games.

I was happy to be brought back to that era and remember what it was like back then. I'm sad knowing what happened in the end.

Need help remembering Best Buy’s Dreamcast preorder bonuses (1999)

Trying to jog my memory from the 9/9/99 Dreamcast launch. I preordered mine at Best Buy, and I’m almost positive they gave me a silver Dreamcast CD sleeve/box kind of a binder/sleeve that held discs or game cases. I think it had a small black velcro clasp to shut it. I’ve never seen it mentioned anywhere online.

Everything I’ve read says Dreamcast preorders didn’t have retailer‑exclusive bonuses, so now I’m wondering if this was some random store promo item or something the employees handed out.

Anyone else remember getting this? Or any kind of preorder bonus from Best Buy? I’d love to know if I’m remembering this right or if it was just a local store thing.

what to do when you drop your dreamcast??

hi. last night I must've kicked my table or something but my dreamcast definitely fell about 3 feet and landed on its head. it doesn't look like anything landed on it, and I tested a few games, and it looks like it still works, but I am really nervous since this is one of the most important things I own. I don't know why I had it on my table in the first place so near to me. it should've been closer to the floor, or the table should have been out of reach. is there anything I should do to make sure there was no damage? the floor is carpeted, and I haven't noticed any cracks, but I'm afraid there might be internal damage, and I want to be sure there is no damage. thank you.

I've always had a soft spot for the original white-spine Dreamcast artwork. This was just a fun little personal project to see how some later releases would look in that style. Hope some of you enjoy them too.

Dreamcast recomps you want to see.

It seems like all the consoles are getting portable game decomp/recomps. Dreamcast is an eventually. I think that's great. There are some true exclusive gems that deserve the DIY remaster treatment.

What are some DC games you want to see get the treatment? I'd love to see my favorite Gundam game of all time Rise from the Ashes get a recomp port, as well as Zombie Revenge and Dynamite Cop. A PC port of the Dreamcast version of Daytona wouldn't hurt my feelings either as the original PC port was basically the Saturn edition.

Question Dreamcast only letting me use Centipede as a music disc

I just got my Dreamcast from eBay and I got 6 games with it (NFL 2K, Centipede, Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation, Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness, Disney's 102 Dalmatians Puppies to the Rescue, and Q*Bert), the only one that's giving me problems is Centipede as it boots me back to the Dreamcast menu after the SEGA copyright screen. It does let me use it in the Music section though.

All my other games work great so I wanted to know if anyone knows a fix for something like this or if I'd have to just replace the disc.

Thanks in advance!

WIP Diddy Kong Racing Sega Dreamcast Port

Check out this direct hardware capture of me playing Diddy Kong Racing on my Sega Dreamcast!!!

Just wanted to let you guys know that Bruce just got Diddy Kong Racing up and running on the Dreamcast, and I've joined to help with performance and optimizations. It's already extremely playable with just some slight FPS dips that need to be fixed up while under heavy load. We're really excited for this one!

Follow me on the Twatters for more updates: https://x.com/falco_girgis/status/2078559605374996738?s=20

PS: We really need someone to make some VMU icons for both the save files (main save + ghost saves) as well as to display on the VMU in-game!
