Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!

Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !

Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!

We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index

Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"

So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)

This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.

Thank you and have fun questing!

Artwork (DQotS) Harte and Paula (scratchboard)

I don't remember at this point if Harte was the default name or one I gave him. The most I remember is that he was my MC and that I had started kinda shipping him with Paula not long before we learn she might possibly be related to the siblings… which was also not long before the server was shut down overseas. And the wiki's quite bare on info for this game, so I may never know.

Anyway, I have no idea what that pattern is. I was not expecting the brown; I only saw the yellow and orange on the edges. If it weren't for how it turned out with Paula's hair, though, it would actually work quite well. (Also. I never want to draw armour again.)

Dragon Quest IV Material added to remakes that may be overlooked (Dragon Quest IV especially the Mobile version as well as an omission from the PS1 version). Spoiler

Major notable changes of course is the 6th Chapter and some story development, plus manual control over all the main characters in Chapter 5 and again 6. Plus the bag which especially can be used to good effect by stocking up on various equipment in Chapter 3, then selling once you recruit Torneko in Chapter 5.

- Somewhat notable, but not at that point is that you don't lose your gold in Chapter 4 when Marquis de Léon defeats you since that is non-optional. Chapter ends soon after, but you can put off doing some Chapter 5 shopping until then (You know, buying stuff to sell off then.).

- The old man in the jail of Palais de Léon that lets you have his boarding passes unless it was a translation thing in the NES Version was just an unlucky prisoner. Remakes establish him as Marquis de Léon's father. GameFAQs poster behindtheword confirms this fact with a translation of the dialogue from the Famicom version. From translation of the prisoner's Famicom dialogue:

Line 1 - "Ho ho... Ho, I'm no good. I tried to run away but it seems the power came"
Line 2 - "but you two are still young."
Line 3 - "Please take my place and live."

Not to mention the Marquis is in the remake a cursed individual who turns back to normal whereas in the NES Version he simply dies.

- Minor but some music is replaced in the remakes. Parthenia goes from Castle theme to Town theme, Royal Crypt originally had Shrine music until you go down the stairs, but now plays Dungeon music throughout.

The town outside Yggdrasil now has the more appropriate Town music until entering the tree.

Psaro's Peak replaces Dungeon music with Shrine music, plus random encounters are removed.

- In the NES Version, once you exit the tunnel at the end of Chapter 3, you get to see Torneko on the outside of it in the Casabranca area. It the remakes the Chapter ends immediately upon exiting the newly completed tunnel.

- Much more minor but Tom Foolery doesn't leave the party until after you leave Canalot (exiting or using Zoom) upon getting the Zenithian helm in the NES Version. In the remakes, he departs right after the party is exiting the throne room.

- You could originally recruit Borya before or during Alena and Kiryl joining. The remake removes the latter option with the Theif's Key door in Imperial Pantry of Parthenia until you enter with Borya. Also Hoffman stays with the party until Alena and her allies join whereas the remake it happens upon entering Mintos.

- You can keep Orifiela in the party until Psaro is defeated as long as you don't include her in the line up at Zenithia. The remake will have her joining the party upon entering Zenithia.

Also she, Healie and Laurel can have their healing spells used manually out of battle. I think this is more known than some of what I listed, but still.

Also the pit allowing you drop to the Doorway to Nadiria is present from the getgo. The remake requires you to speak to the Zenith Dragon after which Psaro demonstrates power by making said pit.

- To recap, what sets off the end of the Hero's village in Chapter 5 is the innkeeper seeing a lost traveler and taking him in only for Psaro's forces to discover said village.

Remake it definitely is Psaro posing as a lost traveler, but in the NES version it really was just an innocent bard. One who in Chapter 1 was in the chambers of The King of Burland. In the remake he is still in Burland Castle.  Once again, dialogue translated by behindtheword of the Famicom version suggests that the traveler wasn't originally Psaro.

Line 1 - "I'm a traveler. I lost my way through the mountains and ended up in this village."
Line 2 - "I didn't know it was such difficult terrain in these mountains. I never thought to ask."

- Another minor bit, but after defeating the 5th opponent in the Endor Tournament, you were normally denied being able to use a Medicinal herb as you got to after defeating the prior opponents. Though not necessarily the remakes give you the option to do so.

Also the Float-o-copier NPC in Diabolic Hall which was gone after the meeting in the NES Version is still in the kitchen area in the remake until the last bit of the story in Chapter 6. Yeah that little fact is even how I got most of the pics of various party members for the Wiki.

- When you are in the Auld Well during Chapter 1, the monsters encountered are Mad mole, Healslime, Winkster and Stump chump. In the Famicom/NES version, the monster layout remains the same in Chapter 5. In the remakes the monsters present in Chapter 5 and 6 are Bagworm, Horny devil, Fire beatle, Paralyslicer, Slimification/King slime, Cannibox and Scarewell.

Done likely to make completion of 'The Big Book of Beasts' easier as these monsters otherwise couldn't be encountered enough. Though Dirty dogu and Wimp are still exclusively encountered in Chapter 4.

- The mobile and phone ports in general are noted for the Party Chat being implemented which don't get me wrong was why I got this first on my newer phone a few years back. Music is also improved. And like the other games mobile ports, Zoom requires only 1 MP.

But I'm surprised the Pioneer Town development isn't given the same hype. Nothing game breaking, but it can be finished sooner and thus having added gear (especially multi targeting weapons) is convenient.

My best attempt at detailing the town changes here: https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/Pioneer_Town

Also not much I can give personally as I only saw an FAQ on it and watch some videos, but the PS1 version of said town had varied forms based on a similar town in DQ VII also on the PS1. Only played the 3DS Version of that. Plus the Fungeon in DQ IV on the PS1 had several floors taken from other Dungeons in the game plus some from VII.

- For whatever reasons some item descriptions and the like has some word alterations in between the DS and Mobile version.

- Also not mentioned often is that the Bonus Dungeon in the PS1 version reused floors or areas from earlier in the game, plus some from VII.  Even weirder is that the wiki stated that the Mobile version restores the PS1 layout which it doesn't.

- In the PS1 version, if you don't start the game after letting the opening play out, you cut to what's called an attract mode. Generally in games those play briefly to show the CPU doing a quick game play demonstration. The attract mode in this case actually shows what the 7 companions do Pre-Game. Finally made a wiki article some time ago as the site didn't really acknowledge such:

https://dragon-quest.org/w/index.php?title=Dragon_Quest_IV_Attract_Mode

- The bag while present from the PS1 remake and on isn't available until Chapter 5 in the aforementioned port. Thanks goes to CronoTheMute pointing this out.

General Finishing what I started...a LONG time later :D

My history with Dragon Quest began officially with purchasing Dragon Warrior 7 on the PS1. I hadn't been completely enthralled with the first game when I tried it, and it wasn't until Final Fantasy 4/2us and 6/3us that I got into JRPGs. After that, when visiting a friend, I rented Dragon Warrior 4 to see if I felt differently about the series, and was like "Ooh, this is quite good!" So I wanted to give this series as much love as Final Fantasy.

So, I played and beat 7, and enjoyed the feast. I had picked up a GBA, bought the GBC remake of Dragon Warrior 3, and had a BLAST. We were hearing that DW4 was going to be remade - and localized - for the PS1 as well, and I was particularly excited. But as we know, those hopes were dashed...

...until it was announced that the fourth through sixth games were being redone on the DS...5 and 6 being localized for the first time! I was over the moon, as I had just played and loved Dragon Quest 8 (official name restored!). And then to top it all, Dragon Quest 9 was coming EXCLUSIVELY to the DS. It was a great time to own that little system!

I bought all four of those. I beat Dragon Quest 4. But I didn't beat 5, 6, or 9. Because at the beginning of 2009...I started playing World of Warcraft. And I think many of you know how addictive that beast is. It took over, and there was no more room for the DQs. :/

Recently, though, I began playing 11, and - as I have said elsewhere - it just may topple 8 as my favorite. And while preparing for a vacation...I came across that ol' DS, and those unfinished games. The hardware still works, and the saves were still intact! :D

I started a fresh game of 5, just to get the feel again, and played up through early Chapter 2. But I was really curious about where I had stopped way back then, as I really couldn't remember! So, taking stock of what key items I already had, checking a walkthrough, and several Zooms later, I figured it out...I needed to use the Magma Staff to blast open the way to Zenithia.

Now I'm back on track. Now I want to finish up 5. And once I do, I'll need to do the same "reverse engineering" on 6 and 9, so I can finally complete them too.

...while, of course, continuing to enjoy 11. ;)

Dragon Quest VII 99/100 Mini Medals and I am going insane

Please help; this is driving me bonkers. I have 99/100 mini medals. I have systematically gone through every location, past and present, using the treasure sniff ability. The only treasure I have left is in Aeolus Vale present. When I’m in the overworld, it says there’s one treasure left on the island. But if I go to Aeolus Vale town, the Sanctum of Cirrus, or the Venus Tower individually, entering the locations as I do so, it says there’s no treasure in each location. This leads me to believe the treasure is in the overworld, perhaps in a golden sparkly spot? But I’ve walked the length of the island several times and can’t find anything. I really want the Metal Sword; any help is appreciated!!

Dragon Quest IX Why are the "trigger area" (idk what the proper term is) of some monsters so sensitive?

An example being I can't walk over a Cobra Cardinal that's in the middle of pulling itself out of the floor, but I can walk under a Drakularge that's falling from the sky and have a few seconds before it's "activated" (again, don't know the proper term).

General DQ 2 HD Remake is fantastic

I just ran through all 3 HD Remakes for their Platinums and 2 seems leagues above 3HD and 1HD. Kind of jarring how much better it is in comparison. I understand the flexibility of 3s teams and the rare lonely warrior route of 1 (unless you carry) but I don't understand how anyone could respectability say either is better then 2. Genuinely curious what some of you think? I was born in the 80s so I also get nostalgia matters.

Dragon Quest IV DQ4 is "not compatible" and yet it's still installed and runs perfectly fine??

Just snooping around the Play Store and noticed on Dragon Quest IV's app page it says it's not compatible with my device anymore... But it works fine, still installed, still has my save files and everything. Is this just an error or what?

I also noticed it's ONLY DQ4 that says this, none of the other ones do. Is it related to the Torneko's appraisal bug that crashes the game?

Dragon Quest VI Is it normal to fight Murdaw at lv.17/17/15/11?

I just get Ashlynn as a new party member then I somehow find my way to Murdaw when I'm at lv.15/15/13/8 and get hit so hard she die in one-hit. Shouldn't the game give more time to explore and farm after getting a new member before the boss fight? Is it ok to fight Murdaw as of now or should I just farm more?

Dragon Quest V I Just Recruited a Liquid Metal Slime On My First Encounter

First time playing DQV. Right outside the Faerie Palace lake, I ran into a LMS for the first time. I killed and recruited. Looking at the handy monster recruitment chart, I see that it has a 1/256 chance of asking to join your party. I realize that I’m extremely lucky.

Now for the important question: is it worth keeping in the party? I just dropped an Orc King for it. I currently have a Golem, Mudraker, Small Fry and Slime Knight in the party as well. I’m level 29.

On the DS, btw.

What an amazing journey it was. I will not ramble on about all the amazing things in the game, those have already been said enough.

I just say that I really loved it, from start to finish. And want to convey my thanks to all the monster who joined me on this adventure.
