I've been playing DND for over a decade, but this is my first time DMing. I've gone all out on writing the campaign, I wrote an encounter for my rope welding swashbuckler to get to use her rope to help the party climb a mountain while something is throwing rocks down on them. The idea is to either strength check to hold on and take the hit of the boulders or dex save out of the way but risk falling. I wanted to visualize the difficult climb and the physics of the boulders rolling down the mountain.

I spent hours hot gluing cardboard and paper to get the right angle, grid the paper with glue so the minis Just stay on unless hit, and most of that time was trying to get the ball to roll down the corridor. I finally got it to function, but I'm not sure if it looks like literal trash and I wasted my time when I could have just drawn it on my battle map and let theater of the mind do the rest.

I'm just finishing up my first minis (with acrylic paints) and have read that it's best to finish with a lacquer or an enamel. I have a health condition that makes me really sensitive to chemical odors, and I can wear a respirator while applying stuff, but I definitely can't handle if they carry the odor for weeks or months afterwards.

Could anyone recommend which product(s) would be best to finish my minis with, based on that? It's okay if it's got a lot of odor when applied, but it needs to calm down on the smell with time.

this is supposed to be a pin Ill give my players. Its kind of a detective game set in Victorian England and the players are agents.

I plan to turn this design into a stencil to etch on copper. the design will be protected and raised from the rest of the surface after the etch.

A Knife, a V tool and a 4mm Dockyard U Gouge.

Carved from basswood. 4 inches tall 2inch by 2inch.

The real key here is the hering bone pattern in the beginning. Carving a good braid doesnt take complicated cuts, its a just a lot of simple, cuts in a repeating pattern, draw it on first, and follow the pattern out.

If woodcarving looks interesting and like something you might want to try? The advice below will help, and is focused on the type of carving I do.

You need several things, a sharp knife, a leather strop with compound for honing your blade, safety gloves (A5 or better) and basswood (to carve like i do at least.)

Solid Knife brands, Flexcut, Badger State Blades (USA), Mstein (Europe) there are a lot of great knife brands. Stay away from kits on amazon of several knives. They're much much lower quality with inconsistently tempered steel. (What that means is its not hardened, and so it won't stay sharp easy, meaning you're fighting the knife and dont understand why its harder for you to carve when its easy for others.)

Why Basswood? Its softer than other hardwoods and holds detail well. Learning to carve with basswood is akin to learning to drive on an automatic. It simplifies and streamlines learning. Woods like Walnut and oak can be carved, but learning to carve with them as the starting point is like learning to drive on an 18 wheeler Semi Truck with manual transmission. Its needlessly difficult.

This is what it looks like after dish washing soap, cleaning spirit and drawing over it with washable pen, before washing.

I also tried methylated spirits on the ‘carpet’ looking drawing, but it washed off the grid lines before reaching the permanent marker..
