MrLlamaSC joined us to talk D2R, Warlock balance, and the future of Diablo II
Greetings, Champions!
We recently sat down with MrLlamaSC for a long-form episode of Stay Awhile, and Llama, and I wanted to share a CliffNotes recap for anyone who has not had a chance to listen yet.
This was a special conversation for us. Llama has been one of the most recognizable voices in the Diablo II community for years through his guides, speedruns, build knowledge, and consistent dedication to keeping the game alive.
We started by talking about how he first discovered Diablo II around 2001 and was hooked almost immediately. A big theme throughout the episode was immersion: the atmosphere, music, item hunt, difficulty, and sense of danger that make Diablo II feel different from so many modern games.
Llama also walked through his content creation journey, starting with StarCraft II commentary before eventually finding Diablo II speedrunning and streaming. What began as a small audience slowly grew into a full-time career. One of the biggest takeaways from that section was that his success came from consistency, experimentation, and simply starting rather than waiting for everything to be perfect.
A major part of the episode focused on Reign of the Warlock and the current state of D2R. Llama’s view was that balance changes need time to settle. He compared it to old StarCraft II patches where something might look broken at first, only for players to adapt after a few weeks. On the Warlock and Echoing Strike specifically, he acknowledged that the original numbers were extremely high and that the character had too many strengths without enough tradeoffs. His feeling was that the recent adjustments bring the Warlock closer to fitting within the spirit of Diablo II.
We also talked about community feedback and how impossible it is to make everyone happy. During the Warlock debate, some people were upset because they thought Llama wanted the class nerfed, while others were upset because they thought he did not want it nerfed enough. The broader point was that feedback matters, but Diablo II has a specific identity, and not every piece of friction should be removed.
That led into one of the strongest themes of the episode: difficulty, rarity, and friction are part of what make Diablo II special. Llama talked about how the joy of the game is the journey. Finding the rune, finishing the Grail, building the character, and overcoming rough spots are what create the memories. If loot became too easy or monsters stopped being threatening, the game would lose a lot of what has kept it alive for so long.
For future features, Llama’s number one request is still a charm bag, but one that is carefully implemented. He does not want inventory size simply doubled or the early game made easier. His ideal version would come later, around the point where charms fully take over the endgame inventory. We also discussed small buffs to forgotten skills, weak uniques, and underused items — not to make everything S-tier, but to give more options a real place in the game.
We touched on online player count, trading improvements, lobbies, communication tools, clans or guilds, and the need for better social systems if online play is meant to stay party-focused. Llama said he is generally open to online player count, but he also recognizes the concerns around bots, technical limitations, and separating players even further.
Overall, the episode felt like a celebration of why Diablo II still works. Not because it is perfect or should never change, but because the core of the game is still incredibly strong. The challenge for D2R going forward is adding new things in a way that respects the soul of the game.
Huge thanks again to u/MrLlamaSC for joining us and talking through the game we all love.

Discussion Wth, should I just move to Ladder?
How on earth does someone get 30 jah runes? I’ve never seen one in my life. Non ladder prices are unrealistic!

Discussion Can they just get rid of Consume Bind demon PLZ
I'm pretty sure anyone who is summoning a bind demon would much rather be using it than consuming it anyway and it is SOOOOO annoying on a controller to have to be extra careful everytime to consume defiler instead of your demon..
If a skill is that annoying to work around it needs to be adjusted.

Help Request All offline characters gone missing
Hey guys
So I’m super bummed out right now.
I have been playing offline since 2019 on and off and have gotten many characters up to about 90-97.
I have been playing on a steam deck.
Yesterday the steam os updated and my Battle.net couldn’t launch due to a .dll error.
I redownloaded and installed Diablo again only to find that all of my offline saves were gone. I have been looking all over for the .d2s files, but I can’t seem to find them.
Does anyone know anything that could maybe help me get my characters back?
Really not looking forward to grinding for my CoHs, ctas, enigmas etc again… 🥲

Hardcore Trying SP Hardcore for the first time!
And I love it. No seasonal "rush" to get to end game. It's all about min maxing each battle with no gear from a main.
It's been great.
I will say after my first death to chaos sanctuary demons I know very little about the leveling process/ early game defence mechanics.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
More info.
I died at level 28 as a warlock. I had stealth and other garbage on.

SSF SSF Offline - First Warlock Torch
Only 12/13, but still pretty damn happy!
Only farmed 3 torches so far and have a Sorc and a Lock (druid is the 3rd).
Also picked up a Mal, enough lower runes for probably 2xUms when cubed and an SOJ!! from Nith during the key hunt!
2nd SOJ found, so debating popping for a 2nd anni for QoL, but seems like a waste. My first one rolled 13/20/10 so doubt I can do better than that. Seems like the SOJ is probably better to keep rather than being too lazy to change.
Getting closer and closer to an enigma, still so very far away though! One day ill be able to finally play the game!

Theorycrafting A quick score settle regarding low rune and mid rune farming and cubing them up
I am perhaps uniquely qualified to speak on this topic as countess has been my default farm run for basically my whole d2 career. I do other farm runs to mix it up or to target farm but I always come back to doing countess runs on my lite sorc. Someone recently shared with me a post which I guess is old lore at this point about how you will spend your whole life cubing up runes and never even get a zod and that's just using the cube not even the rune farming. This upset me for more than a few reasons.
First of all, el might be the lowest rune but it's far from the most common. The vast majority of rune drops from hell countess and other hell mobs in act 1 fall between tal and sol. Honorable mention to ith and eth.
Second, most of the time when you farm countess you end up with 3-5 runes in your inventory not 1. If you kill elites and rares and high density packs on the way not to mention open the chests on the 5th floor you almost always get yourself an extra rune or 2 out of the run.
Third, I don't think anyone is actually pushing high runes up higher than ber/Jah until you have an excess of them and after you already have that first enigma and have unlocked many other varieties of playthroughs with that advanced gear.
Some weeks ago I started a fresh offline playthrough and naturally defaulted to countess farming. All of my meaningful loot has come from countess. I'm sub 100 hours and I have a grief and a shako and I just made my hoto. Yes I was absurdly lucky to get a Lo rune off countess. No one should expect that. But to tell people that picking up low runes is a waste of time is blatantly wrong. You can get huge value out of them by cubing them up over time, and not nearly as much time as everyone implies. Your limiting factor will always be chipped topaz and amethyst and nothing else. If you play online you should never cube up rals or hels because they are so valuable on their own. But here's what my inventory looks like after pushing everything I had up to a vex for my hoto and then doing another 30 minutes or so of countess runs afterward. I wanted to make sure I still had runes for my CTA if I get an ohm like I got the Lo so I set aside a few mals.
If anyone thinks they can casually make more progress on a fresh offline playthrough through a different method, fking prove it. Up there I said sub 100 hours because I don't want to get caught exaggerating but honestly I'm probably at like 20 hours. There's no way I've had even 50 hours of free time in the past few weeks and I play other games too lol.
Merc has insight thresher tal helm with a ral and treachery if anyone is curious. I also have a +3 light ammy, war travs, gheeds, trang gloves, a few skillers. Rest of the gear is fcr and resist blues and yellows.
No anni or torches yet my smiter is level 29 and I don't think I'm going to be able to make my frenzy barb strong enough to be worth risking the keys in the short term so that's my next short term goal.

Image I've heard stories of this I feel like a princesses.

I came back after 2 decades, made a blizz sorc, had very little items and hell act1 was very hard for me with cold immunity.

Discussion Hey guys. Old school D2 'veteran'. Just got Resurrected. Need to know things?
AS the title says, I have been playing since I got the OG game in EBGames at launch all those years ago. But I just got D2R+RotW and was wondering if there are any 'need to know' differences with the new version that might effect my playthrough experience.
I have always mained NovaNecros if there is anything granular to know about that in particular as well, but that is an aside from the main question. Yes I know many of you hate them. I have been hearing that for a *long* time.

Help Request I'm a little hesitant to use a loot filter because I put one on and it still showed ammo... Does anyone have a definitive LF for me to go with? Does it need multiple rules or just one can do it? My stitch is that there are niche things to look out for in almost every category. Thank you all!

Amazon Respec or wait?
Newish player. Just beat A4 hell with poison/LF hybrid javazon. Got 1 respec left. Should I go full LF amazon or wait till I finish A5? I don’t mind running from some mobs if I respec. How bad are light immunes in A5?

Question Anyone else??
Anyone else think about how many God tier rolls they tossed before they knew what they were actually looking at?
I know for a fact I tossed a perfect shako before I knew how good it was because I was a summon druid and thought it had no use. And idk how many triple res boots before I knew how important resistances are.

Theorycrafting What is your favorite way to do a normal play through? Think Offline larzuk self rush but I want to do it on players 8
I do countess runs until my eyes bleed. It's what I do to chill after work. It's how I used to build up currency in online ladder seasons selling perfect spirits and insights and sets and hel runes.
Now I'm doing an offline play though. I'm allergic to LK and my horker is fun and coming online but I still want to do braindead countess runs until I can push a hundred bazillion nef runes all the way up so that in 6 years I can have an enigma.
The problem is I keep running out of chipped topaz and amethyst. I wish they would let me shatter my normal and flawed gems down but until they add that, what's your favorite way to do p8 playthrough of normal? What gear do you use and how do you play? Alternatively do you have a fun way to farm chipped gems specifically? Fun>optimal

Idea Just had the most random thought ever while watching a speedrun.
If each playable character class had a canonical name assigned to them what would it be?
Like the Druid could be called Ulfric or something or the Sorceress had a name like Elena?
What are your thoughts on this one? 🤔
