Guide Diablo 1 and Hellfire companion

**UPDATED**

Hi everyone!

I have created an open source offline companion for the original Diablo (1996) and Diablo: Hellfire games. It aims to combine the classic Diablo item rarity calculator with many modern conveniences in a single HTML file. I have also expanded it with a portable exe file if anyone wants it.

Usage:

Online: GitHub pages (https://blackwizard88.github.io/diablo-1-hellfire-companion/)

Offline: Download the latest HTML file from the Releases menu and open it in any modern browser. (https://github.com/blackwizard88/diablo-1-hellfire-companion)

Using the Windows edition

Download the Windows ZIP file from the Releases section of the repository, unzip it, and then run:

DiabloICompanion.exe

The Windows edition is portable and does not require installation. Designed for 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Windows may display a SmartScreen warning for newly published, unsigned, open source applications. Please review the downloaded file and select More info → Run anyway, only if you downloaded it from the official Releases page of the repository.

If this violates any rules, I apologize.

Help / Support Single player considerations?

Playing a warrior on D1 single player. I finally got the Lachdanan quest for the Veil of Steel, but what else should I do differently from multi-player?

Mainly, what is the best jewelry Griswold can sell? Are there any other differences from multi-player?

Help / Support Where to farm?

I'm a bit stuck beating Hell difficulty. I can easily kill Diablo on normal and he drops some good stuff, or I can easily beat the dungeon on Hell.

What's the ideal place to do some runs and hope to find some better gear?

Also, what's the deal with getting Diablo's drops instead of switching right to the cinematic?

Modding Diablo mod "The Hell 4" enters Alpha stage

Development of TH4 started late June in 2025. It's been one year in development.
________________________________________________________

What is The Hell 4 ? It is oldest of currently functioning mods, and the most ambitious. A total overhaul mod for Diablo 1. Which means that game genre stays the same but everything else is changed/fixed/upgraded/expanded. Despite the huge amount of changes, it still remains loyal to native aesthetics of the original game. Also, Hellfire developers were not given enough time to polish their add-on, and the mod tries to remedy all that.

___________________________________________

New features in TH4:

- there are now 4 traits available on character creation (used to be 2), this was a feature highly sought after,

- there are more traits,

- several new quests (with extra dungeons) resurrected that were planned by Blizzard in Diablo 1 but never got implemented,

- new subclass (Gladiatrix) and three new exotic subclasses for Pistoleer added through game changers,

- quite a few new monsters,

- some new synergies and perks,

- game now supports per-pixel lighting and soft shadows,

- new system of Power-Ups available as Wirt service (of course, he'll rob you blind),

- new system of Sigils (D2 charm-like items) that sit in their dedicated inventory,

- and a lot of other less significant improvements, fixes, etc.

___________________________________________

Among achievements that occurred before TH4 (in TH1/2/3):

  • countless fixes of original game bugs,
  • upgraded system engine,
  • support for higher resolutions, display modes and refresh rates,
  • convenience solutions (gold auto-pickup, alt compare of items in inventory with items worn, alt highlight of items on the ground, huge amount of gameplay options to adjust certain systems individually (both gameplay and cosmetic), visual NPC trade windows, etc.),
  • functioning multiplayer,
  • there is running in the game now (including running in dungeons, outside of battle),
  • 6 player classes divided into 29 subclasses (with even more variations through traits),
  • 24 basic dungeons and 35 extra quest dungeons (with maps and rewards differing for game modes and difficulties),
  • all originally planned quests re-implemented here,
  • 8 different game modes: Easy, Normal, Hard, Hardcore, Survival, Ironman, Speedrun and Nightmare,
  • quests with additional dungeon levels ported to multiplayer (with map adjustments),
  • certain bosses dropping some iconic unique items,
  • improvements to character info window,
  • more balance polishing,
  • increased caps to character level (150), spell level (100+) and character stats (way over 250),
  • 9 difficulty modes (used to be 3),
  • traits and game changers that allow to fine-tune the character during creation,
  • more item types (white, magic, rare, socketed, enchanted, unique (over 4600 uniques btw), set),
  • new (tier 2) base items,
  • 3 new item slots (gloves, belt, boots) and 3 weapon quick-slots,
  • expanded inventory (10x7 squares),
  • large visual item stash at Gillian, with buyable upgrades,
  • new affixes,
  • perks and synergies, that allow you to create various builds now,
  • crafting (Griswold) & enchanting (Adria) of items,
  • improved item sorting logic (looting),
  • improved magic find with a higher limit (more chance to get uniques/rares),
  • increased item durability caps and upgraded durability oils,
  • more monster AI types,
  • a lot more monsters (almost 300), including previously unseen
  • more unique monsters, and mixed boss packs,
  • monster and boss "activation" sound effects,
  • separate ambient added to different locations,
  • player and monster walk sounds (that depend on terrain),
  • new system of item quenching (available at Griswold's shop),
  • Cain can transmute items, adding a new layer of item modifications,
  • new standalone extra game mode "Coliseum", where all progress is made through duels, no monsters.

Victory! Someone Pinch Me! I Must Be Dreaming!

After 10 hours of shop refreshing over two weekends, I finally landed my dream bow! It's the fourth time I've seen the combo but this is the first one to land the base I wanted. I targeted the short war bow due to Hellfire oil mechanics (they're also permanent in DevX), this bow can reach a higher damage ceiling (4-34) than any other bow.

Just wish it had rolled a little higher on the Merciless prefix... but since after all this time I still haven't seen a single Obsidian/Zodiac piece of jewelry, I still have some shopping to do. Buying this one and crossing my fingers for a better roll. Haha, wish me luck!

Help / Support Best ways to play Multiplayer sessions of Diablo 1 (original) in 2026?? (Mac friendly)

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hello Diablo players
I am just a Diablo 1 fan. I have finished the game couple of times, but I am missing to play online. I play Diablo 1 with the last official Update, using DevilutionX in Mac.

What are the 2 best ways to play Diablo 1 in Multiplayer in 2026?

Considering:

a) Mac Friendly solutions (preferred)
b) Easy or not so complicated methods
c) Methods compatible with using DevilutionX
d) A big and active community in 2026

I appreciate since now your answers and your guidance!

I am just a Diablo 1 fan, having a nostalgia wish to accomplish, and that trust the community to make it happen

Thank you all, in advance.

Help / Support How am I supposed to get Flawed Rubies?

Hi all! I was playing Diablo Belzebub mod and I'm new to it so there's lots of gaps in my knowledge. Does anyone know if there's a reliable way to get a certain flawed gem compared to others? I seem to get more of every other gem compared to rubies.

Modding New Diablo I browser realm — looking for beta testers

I’ve been working on WUQH, a new self-hosted Diablo I realm built to make classic multiplayer easy again.

You can play the free demo from almost any browser with nothing to install, create or join games easily, and share the same lobbies with desktop players using Diablo.exe or DevilutionX.

Account creation is simple — no email required. Just make a username, set a password, and jump in.

Full gameplay still requires your own legitimate DIABDAT.MPQ, which loads locally from your device and is not uploaded or distributed by the server.

We also added a Power Rating ladder based on class, level, strength, magic, dexterity, and vitality.

It’s still new, so I’d love to get some beta testers, feedback, and more Diablo I players in the realm.

Help / Support Burned Diablo CD-ROM "Insert CD" glitch

I burned a Diablo ISO onto a cd and it worked perfectly up until I click "play Diablo" in the menu. It prompts me to "Please insert the cd". I insert my cd, the screen goes blank for a minute, and then the prompt re-appears. This has been very frustrating. I'm very new to all of this as its the second game I've ever burned.

I wanted to use reddit as a last resort, but I've been looking all over for a solution and haven't been able to find it. I've discovered that other people have had this problem, but all of the posts about it are from like 2001 and aren't helpful. Also please let me know if I should move this post to another subreddit. Thank you.

Discussion A Brief History of Diablo Variants

Thumbnail backtopixel.com
34 Upvotes

Hi folks,

I have a small hobby website (no ads, no monetization) where I’ve recently posted an article covering some history of the Diablo 1 Variant community.

For those that don’t know, this was a community that came together in the late 90s to play Diablo in a different way, with various challenge run like rule sets.

I selfishly think it’s a good read! There are lots of parallels between variants and the challenge runs that are popular today.

Happy to hear and feedback that anyone has!

Help / Support Please help me

When playing, I went straight from the beginning all the way to this level. I don't understand why the way down to the next dungeon is blocked by 4 walls? I don't know how to go down. I have searched every corner in this level to see if there is any hidden mechanism to help go down the dungeon, but there is none (maybe because I am playing a pirated version, so I am being punished by the game?). Please help me.

Discussion Tremain the Priest: What do we know about this guy?

I discovered the Belzebub mod for myself and saw this guy, then I found out that it was cut content that unfortunately didn't make it into the final version of D1. There's very little information about him, but maybe someone has figured it out and knows something? Maybe someone has some guesses or thoughts about him, let's discuss (anyone, please).

Discussion Frustration as rogue

Since my character level 9 till now level 19 i had the same bow and couldn't find any better.

Heard that i can get the best bow from shop in this range (level 19 to 22).

But it's frustrating the amount of loading and reseting griswold's and writ inventory.

I been doing this for about 1.5 hour and still nothing...

I keep thinking of quitting this playthrough and play as warrior but i already reached level 10 so i only have about 7 levels left to clear the game.

Discussion 8 Potion Challenge Run Gearing (Hellfire SSF no mods)

Post image
32 Upvotes

Fixed the blurry image. I'm doing challenge runs otherwise the game is just chipping away at levels, filling the inventory with potions, and town portaling when you run out.

CHALLENGE: With eight potions only, clear all of the Hell or Crypts on Hell difficulty, on Hellfire. You can use what you pick up, inventory gear swapping allowed but no inventory consumables.

Builds I used to complete these challenges (all solo self-found):

Barbarian (lvl 40-41)
King's Axe of Haste/Blood/Vampires (swap to get health/mana back)
Scavenger Carapace (-15 damage taken from enemies)
Undead Crown -- (Lifesteal)
Empyrean Band (Halves Trap Damage, +2 all attributes)
Dragon's Amulet of the Zodiac (+60 mana, +20 all attributes)
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac (39% resist all, +18 all attributes)

Warrior (lvl 40-41)
Champion's Sword of Haste (two-handed)
Scavenger Carapace (-15 damage taken from enemies)
Undead Crown -- (Lifesteal)
Amulet of Thieves (Halves Trap Damage)
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac (37% resist all, +20 all attributes)
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac (39% resist all, +18 all attributes)

Bard (lvl 37-38)
King's Sword of Haste/Vampires (dual wield, attack speed and mana steal)
Scavenger Carapace (-15 damage taken from enemies)
Obsidian Crown of Sorcery (35% resist all, +19 to Magic)
Empyrean Band (Halves Trap Damage, +2 all attributes)
Dragon's Amulet of the Zodiac (+60 mana, +20 all attributes)
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac (39% resist all, +18 all attributes)

Why choose these items in the builds that did work? The difficulty of the final level of Hell is in dealing with the Advocates efficiently. Melee enemies aren't a problem at all, in fact their presence lets you get free hits to heal up with Life or Mana steal. Hitting the damage threshold to stunlock the toughest melee enemies is not hard with a King's weapon, and groups can easily be kited into positions where you can kill them one-by-one without taking any hits, even without a shield or armor. In fact we don't care about armor at all because it barely works against fireballs and melee enemy attacks can be avoided with skillful movement, positioning, and stunlocking. Blocking interrupts stunlocks on Advocates, as blocking interrupts your attack animation, so don't want to use a shield. Shields are needed to get enough armor for it to matter much against melee enemies, so we should give up on armor entirely.

Killing Advocates with Melee requires Haste-boosted attack speed of Warriors and Barbarians with sword or axes respectively to stunlock them to prevent them from teleporting away after the first 1-2 hits. We'll take too much damage from large groups trying to corner each one, and monsters in Hell regenerate quickly, it's not efficient enough to try to chase them down after teleporting. They have to be killed efficiently enough that Lifesteal can sustain us.

The Bard can never get fast enough attack speed to stunlock them, even with Haste, though she can land two hits usually. Any character can use Stone Curse to kill Advocates but they will run out of mana, unless we run a Vampires weapon for mana steal. Even then, the cost of the Stone Curse won't be regained by the mana steal done when killing the Advocate. So often instead I used Teleport after hitting them twice to make them teleport away, and hitting them one more time. My Bard items are geared toward maximizing mana to survive with Mana Shield, and sustain with a Vampires weapon and a belt of only mana pots.

Defenses are all focused on reducing magic ranged attack damage. First, "Halves Trap Damage" from the "of Thieves" suffix or Empyrean Band reduces all ranged attack damage by 50%, due to a bad implementation. Then, flat minus damage is subtracted, the Scavenger Carapace takes away 15. Then, resistances are applied, and then Mana Shield reduces damage by 33%. So a 100 damage fireball gets cut to 50, then to 35, then 8.75. Without that -15 damage, it would come to 12.5 at the end. So for a 100 damage attack, that's a 30% further reduction. An armor of the Whale instead of Scavenger Carapace could increase our health by 100, or around 25%, so that's not as much of an increase in effective HP. Extra damage reduction over extra Life makes the Life we gain from Lifesteal more efficient too. This was the key to making this challenge possible, so far, at my level of skill anyway.

Barbarian is by far the strongest for this challenge. He does enough damage to 2-shot Advocates and 1-shot with a crit (Barb and Warrior get 1% crit chance per level). Cleave melts melee. He stunlocks Diablo. Teleport can be used to chase down Succubi or Arch Liches, with mana regained with a Great Axe of Vampires.

Warrior is like a worse Barbarian, lacking the cleave. He doesn't even have that much more mana since his ring suffixes need to both be Obsidian. The damage on my Warrior is also low since I can't find a King's Sword of Haste, but he can never get to the damage of the Barbarian, he 3-4 shots Advocates. His advantage would be the ability to use a shield effectively, but it doesn't seem worth it even in the Crypts where there aren't any Advocates. He can barely kill Diablo. I swap off of Empyrean Band and Scavenger Carapace for that fight.

The Bard could barely kill Diablo too, not enough attack speed or damage to keep him stunned. Her cleave makes melee groups a free mana pot, and running Mana Shield with Vampires is peak damage reduction and sustainable spell usage.

I've given up on doing it with the Monk, and I'm still seeing if it's possible with the Rogue. The Monk only does decent damage with a staff, and blocking with the staff messes up his ability to stunlock Advocates. The Rogue can't Lifesteal or Mana steal so she will require some real item optimization and near perfect play. She destroys Diablo with Windforce knockback though. And I don't have a Sorcerer, not sure how far he could go needing mana for damage.

So far Rogue is looking like:
Royal Circlet
Obsidian Plate of the Stars (+40% resist all, +9 all attributes)
Merciless Bow of Thunder / Windforce
Empyrean Band (Halves Trap Damage, +2 all attributes)
Dragon's Amulet of the Zodiac (+60 mana, +20 all attributes)
Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac (37% resist all, +20 all attributes)

Royal Circlet and Plate of the Stars for the all stats, she needs all the damage she can get. Rogue gets it from Str+Dex, so all-stats is best. I didn't use Oils for the other characters but it seems like she needs it. Getting consistent 3-shots on ranged enemies might make the challenge possible. She doesn't get enough health or mana and can't lifesteal, so Scavenger Carapace is less worth it I think. I run Mana Shield on her for the damage reduction.

Help / Support Asking for help in using AutoHotKey

I want to play mage. But I'm using a notebook. This means I can't activate F row without pressing Fn first. I play vanilla gog.

I discovered a program called AutoHotKey but in its tutorial I can't find an example of how to design a script to fulfill my task - reassigning F5-F8 to let's say a-s-d-f.

Can someone help me with it? Would really appreciate it.

Oh boy am I having the time of my life!

Cranked up game speed to about 50%, started farming lvl 1 on nightmare, now somewhat decked out. I am having such a nostalgia blast, it is hard to put it into words.

Not sure if Devolution counts as a mod or not, but the QoL changes alone makes it worth while.

I have played d2 for 20+ years and i thought I would go back to the very beginning where it started 😁😁

Lvl 20 Wizard blasting through normal and early nightmare.

I just wanted to share my excitement with you guys. 💙

Have a great day everyone!
