I’m 21, just graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication, and I recently moved to Detroit. I’m trying to figure out my next steps and wanted to see if anyone here could help me out. I’m really interested in creative work, especially photography, media, content creation, or anything related to creative agencies or production. I’ve worked with my school newspaper as a photographer for about 1 year and 8 months. I’ve also been doing freelance concert photography for local bands since March 2024.

I want to get into something more creative and meaningful, whether that’s a studio, agency, media company, or just making more connections in the Detroit creative scene. If anyone knows of places that are hiring, communities I should join, or has any advice on where to start, I’d really appreciate it.

I'm looking for some who is well versed in fantasy and/or dungeons and dragons and have experience with acting/performance that is willing to be a wizard at my wedding reception in August for 2-3 hours.

I would like a wizard to walk around the reception doing 60 second dungeon/adventure sessions with guests and give out trinkets and prizes to guest while in character. This job is early mornings starting your day by 5am but usually done by 12pm-1pm. Salary pay discussed dependent on experience. Paid bi - weekly 5th and 20th of every month. Essentially this role is merchandising in a large retailer - just 1 major retailer with many accounts ~40 but your home base is in Detroit. You would hit about 3 stores in a day. You make your schedule! So you can choose which weeks are better for you to be out for your overnight calls.

Thinking about relocating to Detroit to join GM in a white collar role, and was curious to see if people would recommend that type of move.

Role would be in the GPSC (Supply Chain) department. I've worked in supply chain before, so I know it can be a thankless job, but I have no experience in the automotive industry.

I would be a mid level employee and would be moving with my family. The automotive world has always been appealing to me and the Detroit Promise program seems like a great program for those who have children, so that's an additional selling point for me.

22F considering moving to Farmington Hills for a marketing job. What's life like for young professionals? How easy is it to make friends?

I recently found out that my current job will be ending at the end of this month. I work for a smaller furniture company, and honestly, I had a feeling things were heading in that direction.

Most of my working life has been spent in jobs that paid the bills but never really felt like a long-term career—warehouse work, customer service, furniture, and similar roles.

Now that I'm 30, I'm realizing I want something more. I'd like to build a career, learn a valuable skill, and do work that feels meaningful. The challenge is figuring out what that next step should be, especially with everything happening so quickly.

Part of me is interested in exploring the trades. I enjoy working with my hands, building things, and solving problems. The idea of being able to create or repair something tangible is appealing. My biggest hesitation is the aptitude testing (more particularly the math).

I've also considered going back to school, maybe for a two-year technical degree (X-ray or something similar). But I'll admit, the thought of starting over academically at 30 is intimidating after being out of school for so long.

I'm in the Detroit area and would appreciate any advice from people who have made a similar career change. If anyone knows of companies, apprenticeships, unions, or individuals willing to train someone who's eager to learn, I'd love to hear about them.
