RELEASE ANNOUNCEMENT:

We started Dark Cloud Enhanced Mod in the Summer 2020, and after 2 years of ups and downs, we finally made it!

The Enhanced Mod introduces many new features, QoL changes and fixes for the original game. Our initial goal was to create a "fixed" version of Dark Cloud, but it turned out to be more than that.

As someone who has been craving for new Dark Cloud content for decade and a half, it's even more absurd to be the one responsible for it! While our mod may not be in a scale of a remake, it's the closest thing to being one.

Thanks to our beta testers, we managed to find and solve many bugs in the way. Unfortunately, not everything was solved. However, the mod is definitely in a good playable state, and we'll work towards fixing unresolved bugs in the future.

I won't be writing a grand opening here hahah, all the information you need to know about the mod can be found in the download link.

Shoutout to the entire development team, beta testers and of course all of you, the Dark Cloud community!

Have a great time!

Discussion Antique Sword without debuffs

I want to craft an Antique Sword in Dark Cloud 1, but I need a Sand Breaker first, and that weapon has the Thirst debuff. Is there a way to bypass or remove that debuff so I'm left with only the Stop buff?

Note: Although the wiki indicates that the Antique Sword does not have this ability in Dark Cloud 1, it does.

[DC1] How do you level up weapons without grinding?

This might sound like a stupid question considering I did the Platinum on DC2 not to long ago and also completed the Demon Shaft (although to be fair, that was 20 years ago).

I know how the game works in general, but how do I effectively level up my weapons without grinding or abusing glitches?

For reference, I finished DC2 with maybe 5 hours of grinding in total compared to my total playtime of about 150 hours.

Love to hear everyone's thoughts.

Edit: Thanks for the answers. I got some great input and will try to use it in my next run.

And maybe I wasn't clear enough in my original post, but I wanted to ask if there is a viable way to finish the game with little or no grinding with no glitches. That includes the broken dagger glitch. But no harm done. Maybe someone else saw it and learned of it that way. Then that's good already.

A song I released of my debut album, took inspiration from the Dark Chronicle Tutorial Music!

Being a video game composer is my dream job so it’s only natural that it inspires me even when making music for singer/songwriter.

I’m not sure who the composer’s are at Level 5, I need to learn their names because music from dark chronicle and professor layton is such a massive inspiration to me.

The jazzy calmness of the tutorial music really inspired this song and the way it moved, can you hear the inspiration?

I've been playing Dark Cloud from Level 5, a great classic from 2000 on the Playstation 2. Here's my first part of my playthrough. Enjoy! #darkcloud #level5 #jrpg

Who else gets insane nostalgia when you play the first Dark Cloud? The first levels hit hard because I played them so much as a kid (not knowing what I was doing). Brings me back to the early 2000s!

Discussion Why do people recommend Dark Cloud 2 over the first game?

Recently I checked out some old games. DC2 came heavily recommended. However I find DC1 to far superior.

After 12 hours into trying both - Yea, I think you get it, 12 hours with watching the stories, I have now only made it to Frightening Forest in DC2. In comparison in DC1 I have actually build entire towns. I think I am already 1/4th through the first game from what I remember. DC1 just feels so well designed and pacing keeps it interesting.

DC2 has more content, and an looooong story, but everything just feels unnecessarily padded out, even moving between dungeons isn't streamline anymore. That Photo mode, I can only hope it is not important.

For the people who love DC2 why, is it that the game gets good eventually? I want to know because I usually don't spend too much time on one game, but it feels like the game hasn't even started yet.

I can't seem to progress past Matataki Village.
I found all Atla's so far, got the flute, defeated the Snake and got the pendant but I don't have Goro's treehouse in the Village. Can someone help me here? I'm stuck.

Discussion Does the story make the rest of the game worthwhile? (Dark Cloud 2)

Dark Cloud 2 is a game I've started a lot over the course of my life, but never gotten past the middle of chapter two. I recently managed to get past that mental roadblock (specifically by ignoring fishing, inventing, etc.), but now I'm running into a different issue.

The gameplay, as in going through dungeons and fighting dudes, feels soooooo samey. I can approach basically every enemy with the nearly the same strategy and going through the floors offers precious little in the way of variety. I know I shouldn't be expected like, a massive amount of gameplay variety, especially with how much other stuff is in the game, but it doesn't change that playing the game is turning into a slog.

However, what keeps me coming back is Max and his letter. That premise, that the game's story is being retold through this letter and Max's amazing voice actor, has managed to keep me hooked ever since I first booted this game on the PS2. I really want to know what the conclusion to that letter is, if it reaches his mom, if his mom is even alive or not, a bunch of stuff like that.

Hence the post title: does the story's conclusion and Max's letter make the rest of the game worthwhile?

Dark Chronicle/Dark Cloud 2 Savegame PCSX2

Hi everyone!
I’m looking for a Dark Chronicle / Dark Cloud 2 save file that’s in Heim Rada, before destroying the Fire Squall.
I accidentally missed taking the “Cinders” photo, and now I can’t complete my photo collection without replaying a large part of the game.
If anyone has a save around that point and would be willing to share it, I’d really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance!

The mod is officially released! There are still a handful of issues we're finding out about regarding some busted hiding spots, however for the most part, the main map itself is finished! I hope you enjoy, I had a ton of fun building the map!

Special thanks to Cyris for porting it into Unreal Engine, and thanks to Muddle12 for their DCExtractor!

I'm hidden in all 5 gameplay screenshots on the Steam Workshop page, see if you can spot them all! ;)

Discussion Beaten! And still a PS2 classic.

I replayed this game for the first time in years! I was a dumb kid on my first run, largely using Max's hammer and Steve's projectiles to solve 90% of my problems.... I don't recommend it, as the final boss was super difficult this way (not only do they hit very hard, but I respect the AUDACITY to make it a timed fight too! 💪😨).

But this time I did a super invested replay. :)
To play it properly, and get more out of each part!

Random thoughts & bullet points :

► This was the first game that I ever clocked more than 100 hours into. This time it took me 120 hours (for just the main game). There's a lot of game in here!

► I min-maxed my weapons by synthing weaker ones on, "+5" at a time. I WISH the game was less "all-or-nothing" about weapon damage (a lot of "NO EFFECT" otherwise). Leveling weapons by constantly swapping the controlled characters seems best/fastest method, but it's not really an "ideal system" either... It also feels like long-range weapons needed to be 'overpowered' to be as effective.

► I took enough photographs for all the rewards ...Which were Monster Badges that make monsters stronger. 🤓👍 ...but not strong enough. 😩👎
Monster Transformations being terrible was something I remember from back in the day... and my replay didn't change that... It's baffling that Max gets a Super Fighting Robot ... while Monica is stuck with a pretty crappy monster mechanic. (Meanwhile, her "spell absorb counter" was a WAY better a perk to lean on).

► I got all the scoops. Except near the beginning with the clown boss, funny enough. But, goddang the clowns are creepy. 😂🤡😭 A clown robot sounds like I dodged a bullet. And Max's CLOWN COSTUME is... "wtf levels" of weird. I didn't mind skipping it. :S

► The weapons have great designs and quirks. The best Armband and Gun are cool looking; while LEGEND and Island King are weird but funny design choices for "ultimates". Oh, I did the Name Change trick for Monica... She gets so many neat weapons, so getting her "ultimate weapon" with the Ticket let me ignore her insane weapon tree to build up MANY swords instead. (And having the Island King was a nice fallback option if things got bad). Overall weapon options have good variety, but I wish the magic was more like the guns having more unique firing rates and attack patterns. Magic had homing and charging; but charging wasn't fun and I'd have loved to experiment with different "spells" instead.

► I love the difficulty --- most enemies hit pretty hard so it's nice that the block button works well and quickly. Funny enough the Rainbow Butterfly is probably he hardest boss (outside the final boss). Using Monica to slowly & quietly roast them in "rainbow order" wasn't what I expected from an "early chapter 2 boss" ... (I expected something more like the goofy Dr Jammer fight lol)

► Areas are WAY too big. It can take a good 40 seconds to reach most corners of Palm Brinks from where you teleport in (and you'll likely be here a lot). The 'Move' option is great for fast-travel, but sadly doesn't work in the Future (which are often the largest areas) (StupidGundoradaWorkshop >:( ). And you're also at the mercy of RNG gods floor layouts, some way bigger than others. There's an option to "Move To Spheda Ball", but a "Move to Floor Exit" should exist too! And it sucks that areas are big....and draw distance is pretty low. I've "missed" enemies tucked away in big spaces, which made me backtrack a few times...(I often used Gemron to move faster until Steve gets his Propeller legs)

► Why are VERY IMPORTANT stats-building items placed in the smallest and plainest looking treasure chests??? 😭😭 I hate to sound "too modern" but these things need that "yellow game paint" on them, or just...stock pile 'em near a Warp Gate. It's kinda funny since DC2 has new chest designs for each dungeon...but the future chests are basic, brown, pretty hard to spot, and many are found off the beaten path.

► Issues aside, this game is still VERY addictive and has a solid gameplay loop. It's absolutely a "just one more level" kind of game. I'm shocked that Level-5 hasn't returned to the series while RPGs are pretty popular right now, and while Minecraft's "build stuff" idea has helped slingshot it as the best selling game of all time (outside Tetris). I heard Level-5's Fantasy Life also has a "town building" mechanic, is that true??

► I played Spheda'd a lot! ...Spheda is as fun as it is frustrating; and starting the minigame at Starlight Canyon is like throwing you into the lion's den (it's not "beginner friendly" at ALL haha). But I never gave up!! 😂
...The Turkey is generally the best club, right? Stronger clubs seem like a BAD idea with sewers, trees, canyons, and lava pits everywhere.

► I fished a lot. That "horse fish" is also the stuff of nightmares. ô_O
Umamusume this is not. 🐴

► Thanks to a redditor who noted you "run faster" by 'running diagonally' instead. The Sheriff race is a BIG pain in the butt ––– but this tip made it a BREEZE.

► The music is super catchy. Nishiura has an ability to craft pretty, nostalgic, and sincere melodies like its easy. The songs made hum even many many hours later and through their relatively short loops. Adventure music sounds like it's out of a story book; the future themes sound so bittersweet, and the dungeon tracks are all catchy....
... I... wanna borrow my friend's accordion to learn the Palm Brinks theme! 😅👍

►Random NPC thoughts:

  • I laughed, Max's beef with his dad never gets much screen time. You show him a gun, then you move him out of his mansion into a tiny house near a volcano where he never gets to see his wife. 😅😭
  • Parn sucks lol. What the hell. He paints a "girlfriend" who joins us too, why not... Just to find out he's "painting a newer and prettier" girl. 😭 There isn't much plot by way of character/recruitment quests (it feels like there was supposed to be), so this was such a weird angle to settle on.
  • Pau is still the best companion. No contest.
  • Borneo is surprisingly great for his near 100% drop rate of extra stuff. o_O
  • I got excited when Emperor Griffon spoke and it was my favourite "Firelord, Joker, Skywalking actor". :P
  • Oh, and yeah, the Teen Titan worked well as Max too!

► Max's Best Outfits: Probably the red one. With the cool dragon shoes. 😎

► Monica's Best Outfits: It's a tie between her Princess outfit, her green hunter gear, and the original purple. I loved ALL of her hair accessories. But my other MVP was the cowboy boots which worked surprisingly well with most looks! 🤠 Yipee-ka-yay, y'all.

► Yeah I used the lure glitch. It's actually easier to utilize the exploit than to actually USE the Lure Rod. More than anything, I wanted the money just to REALLY build up my Georama! No restrictions, and using up all the Polyn. It's the main reason I wanted to replay, I wanted to "build things", but I have no LEGO ---- so I played Dark Cloud 2 instead. 😛👍

Anyways.... That's that. Still worth a playtrough. Despite some dated elements, it's still a fantastic time. And I'm all-aboard the "Where's Dark Cloud 3?" train....

Chooo chooo.... :(

Enjoy the pics!

Discussion Weapon System Improvements

One of the main reasons I think I and many others love Dark Cloud is because of the unique weapon system it has and Dark Cloud 2 definitely improved on the original. So I wanted to ask a few of questions about what could be improved or changed to make it better in a spiritual successor but still keep the heart of Dark Cloud’s system intact.

First question: what do you think could be improved on when it comes to synthesis? Keep in mind that the current structure also effect combat, in that the elemental type is chosen to be optimal based on the enemies, so there really isn’t any planning when it comes to weaknesses since you always have what you need.

Second question: how would you fix or improve weapon evolution? Having more options is a given in my book, so this question is more on the function of it rather than the end result.

Last question: given any changes from the previous questions, how would combat change, if at all? Having elemental weaknesses thrown into the mix sounds like a good idea, but when you put that on top of the original model, it falls apart.

I have some conceptual ideas, but my main issue with them is two fold: At what point is it changed so much that it’s no longer like Dark Cloud’s enough to be considered a spiritual successor? And how much does that actually matter to players?

For any that are curious I am actively working on a spiritual successor, however I am just one person. To me it is vital that, as one of the three pillars of Dark Cloud, the weapons system is good. (The other two being the georama and dungeons)

Discussion Getting a new weapon for Xiao?

Edit: NVM I finally got a second slingshot by doing the exact thing I’ve been doing minutes after writing this.

I’m finally playing DC1 after being a huge DC2 fan for so long, and I’m loving it.

However, I’m going crazy as I’ve been attempting to get a new weapon for Xiao and I am DROWNING in swords.

I have farmed for several hours in the later cave levels and the first few forest levels for weapon chests, and I am now up to 13 swords, and no slingshots. I’ve been counting. I’m having to throw away so many.

At this point I could probably make a game of thrones inspired chair out of bone rapiers and baselards

Guides online are saying this is the place to get them, so idk if I’ve just been getting supremely unlucky, or have just been lied to.

Also doesn’t help that the game even rewards you with EVEN MORE SWORDS once you make more progress in Matataki Village.

Discussion Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma

So I started this game because it was recommended and it has so many of the fun aspects dark cloud has, colorful dungeon areas, beautiful villages that you’re actively helping rebuild and recruiting other villagers to help fill your villages up again, it’s decently scratching that itch if another dark cloud style game, highly suggest it. Hopefully this post is allowed. Companions you can take with you that are the villagers. Highly recommend it I played it 6 hours straight yesterday when I bought it

Dark Cloud spiritual successor.

Hypothetically if an indie developer was whipping up a spiritual successor to dark cloud 1 and 2. What sorts of things would you like to see come back from either game. And what things would you think the game could do without?

DC1 Toan Fan Art

Dark Cloud merch is obviously extremely hard to come by, so I thought I'd share this print I came across in case anyone else is interested! I am not affiliated with the artist, Crypt Crow. I will post a link to their store in the comments. You know they must be a real one if they are making Dark Cloud fan art in 2026 😂

The style is slightly more realistic and mature than the actual game, and the detail, especially on the gloves with the Atlamillia Stone and Seventh Heaven is kinda insane. Pretty unique! What do you think?
