Looking for people to test an app - Danish learning! 🇩🇰

• Upvotes

I’m working on an advanced Danish learning app and looking for a few people willing to try it and share honest feedback (as tough as possible in fact! 😄).

I’m especially interested in what you think while using it: what feels clear, confusing, useful, or unnecessary...

Feedback can be through messages or a short call (it is very useful to just have a short talk after 😊).

💰 As a thank-you, I would give you a free month of the app's subscription (if you like it). 🍻

👉 Comment or message me if you’re interested

Thanks in advance 🤩

How to pronounce Thøger

Is it like Too'-er?

I have been saying it with:
-a bit of a softer T
-a more rounded/darker oo
-an -er like I would say it in Swedish, so a soft r

But I'm a bit confused with the ø because it doesn't seem like it sounds at all like Ü in this case.

Thank you!!!

How hard is it to pronounce the Danish language?

I plan on going to Denmark in a few years and I've been studying everything about Denmark: culture, language, etc. I honestly think it would be paradise for me, but I have only one question about how hard is it to pronounce the language? I can understand it pretty good but I'm just curious about things like some of the more unusual vowels. I usually adapt fast to languages so I might be able to fluently learn it.

  • Mand
  • Gay
  • Core millennial
  • Kommer oprindeligt fra et spansktalende land

Mine interesser:

  • Film (mere horror end dokumentarer)
  • Musik (mere Copenhell end Distortion)

Looking for help translating a 19th century letter

I have a late 19th century (probably between 1860-1880) hand signed letter by Queen Louise, wife of King Christian IX.
I’m looking for help in translating the letter to understand the contents better, along with who the letter was addressed to.

This link shows images of the letter. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Help With Double Letters?

This is a pretty specific question about grammar schematics. I’m a pretty new Danish learner, and I noticed that some of the nouns have double letters in their definitive forms (-en or -et at the end) but not in their indefinite forms (en or et before the noun). For example, et spil and spillet. I noticed that this is similar to how there’s double letters in some forms of English verbs (i.e. running), and was wondering if there was similarly a way to tell when vs when not to use a double letter, or if there’s just a few irregularities that I’ll have to learn.

Thanks and much appreciated!

How Can a Pensioner Practice Speaking Danish in Denmark

As a retiree traveling to Denmark to learn Danish, how can I get practice speaking Danish with Danes? All the anecdotes say Danes switch immediately to English when they hear you struggling. Also, there is no small talk.

Any recommendations from other old folks?

Note - I will be in København.

Help with translating an antique Danish cookbook

Hi all,

I was given an old Danish cookbook (with a handwritten date of 1889) that was found in the walls of a house while remodeling years ago. It has a good amount of handwriting and what seems to be a letter. Using google, I was able to kind of understand that some of it is prayer, but the contents still remain illegible to my non Danish speaking self.

I've already contacted a museum near me for help with preservation, and with the hopes of donating a piece of local history, but in the meantime, I was hoping if anyone here is able to understand what thoughts the previous owner jotted down 137 years ago. Unless most of it is actually in English and I just can't read gothic cursive lol.

I have images uploaded here: https://imgur.com/a/Z8oL2FR

Thank you for any help!

Danish video clip transcription request

I have a short 7 second video clip in Danish. https://streamable.com/r6gdlq

The context is that this is a part of interviews with spectators at Smukfest NøgenrÌs.

If a Danish speaker could make a transcription of what is being said (especially the woman on the left because it is harder to understand what she is saying), I would really appreciate it.

What did she mean?

A friend once wrote on me in sharpie “Elsker dig smukke.” I am a man. We were very close friends. She told me it means I love you, beautiful, but when I google it it seems like it’s a romantic thing? We’re both pretty young, so I don’t know if some people are just more loose with the phrase or if she was secretly telling me something.

How much further learning does it take from learning Danish to be able to read Old Norse?

I'm well aware that the languages / forms of the language are very different, particularly in grammar. I'm just wondering how much extra study it would take for someone who is already reasonably able to be have conversations in Danish to be able to understand Old Norse texts?

I've heard, for example, that Modern Greek speakers have a much easier time learning Ancient Greek than Modern English speakers do learning Old English. Whereabouts on this spectrum would Danish and Old Norse be?

ETA: I'm already learning Danish for other reasons, I just have an interest in ancient languages.

Folkemødets official app is not in english... I fixed that

Hey Folks! (No pun intended)

I'm really looking forward to my first Folkemøde, but I've been a little disappointed that the official app is jangy and that it does not support English for all you expats.

So I sat down, drank eight cups of coffee and built my own app. I want to share it with you so you can all get maximum enjoyment from the public meeting :) Link in the comments! 👇

What can it do?

  • It helps you plan your Folkemøde — and tells you which events overlap so you don't double-book.
  • It has a recommendation tool so you can quickly filter events *including filtering on which events are in english\*
  • It calculates the walking distance between events, so you know if you can actually get from one to the other.
  • It sends your plan to your calendar via email — and notifies you if an event on your plan changes.
  • And, of course, it comes in both Danish and English, so everyone can plan their Folkemøde, regardless of which language they speak.

It's all browser-based, so no download is required. Just open the link and get started. It's free, of course, and you only need to sign up with your email if you want to send events to your calendar and subscribe to changes.

Enjoy and have a great Folkemøde! ♥️
