I started painting after losing my job and housing in the pandemic and have kept going ever since. I paint from the unconscious, spontaneously, without foresight into the final result or ultimate subiect matter so almost all these pieces have different paintings underneath. I'lI put on music and enter flow consciousness and allow experiences and other (psychological) material to express itself from my brain, down my arms, and through my fingers onto the canvas. A lot of water goes onto each canvas and half the time my conscious mind thinks, "This is a mistake. This isn't going anywhere. What the heck is this even supposed to be?!" I'lI stop and let it dry and return hours or days or sometimes even weeks later to restart the process.

A lot of emotion/energy finds its way to the surface of my mind during the process and often a feeling of loss, nostalgic sadness, and emptiness comes up. Maybe because these images represent places and experiences that will never be except inside consciousness; experiences that only reside in imagination and offer a lot more peace and tranquility than the turbulence and trauma of the material/physical world.

The pieces also have themes of development and ambiguity of form, probably because of my fascination with evolutionary biology and how one species gives way to a new one; how every being is a becoming since it is always already under pressure (natural selection, for example) to evolve. My mind merges images of butterflies and plants and birds into hybrids of ambiguous symbols in many of these probably for this reason.

As you can see, the paintings almost always have shimmering or glittering lights (stars) which to me represent points of clarity and focus, moments of understanding that guide the mind toward a goal or destination. Think of the phrase, "Follow your North Star." Or think of how in ancient times the stars guided boats and ships at sea.

I'm Ashleigh, and I am the creator of Ashleigh's Kitchen Mail Club. A New Zealand based monthly snail mail club for people who love cooking, collecting beautiful recipe cards, and a little mailbox happiness.

Each month is built around a different ingredient or seasonal theme, featuring four illustrated recipe cards inspired by family recipes, favourite dishes, and memories made in the kitchen. Alongside each recipe, I share the stories behind them in the hope they'll inspire new traditions in your own home.

This month's theme is Honey, with recipes for Fermented Hot Honey, Honey Butter, Honey Glazed Carrots, and Homemade Granola. My goal is to preserve the joy of sharing recipes the old-fashioned way, one letter, one story, and one meal at a time.

This month's gifts are a holographic and transparent 7.5cm x 9cm bee sticker and a bee magnetic bookmark, a word search that has words from within the mail club, it also hides next month's theme and of course a letter that explains each recipe and their story.

Hi, cozy cottage friends! 🌿☕️

I wanted to share a few of my recent hand-painted pieces that have been bringing so much warmth to my little studio lately. I love capturing the quiet, magical side of nature—especially dreamy moons, ancient-feeling forests, & pretty clouds. & turning southern staples into some place we’d all rather be!

Creating these always feels like a slow, cozy ritual. I usually put on a stove simmer pot with cinnamon, vanilla, and orange, put on some soft acoustic music, and just let the acrylics and gouache take over.

I run a small shop on Etsy where I turn commissions into dreams. I share original artwork and prints, magnets, tees, sweaters, mugs…..you name it!
