I recently got a request on an editing platform for developmental editing, which I have never done before. I've copy edited books while also making suggestions about flow and big picture. How do I learn? Are there some good free or reasonably priced courses? anything I can read? thanks!

I am considering a career change and want to know how I could move into editing in Australia.

I have been editing someone's novel recently as a favour, and I always used to volunteer to be the final lookover/editor during group assignments at uni. I have an interest and a strength for it but that is all - no training.

However, I keep seeing ads on social media advertising 8 week online editing course from Penguin books Australia and others. Some have said that they're for entry level editors and some don't imply that there are any prerequisites.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me the value of those courses. Are they something that I could use to genuinely break into the industry if I took it? Is an entry level editor someone who has no training? Or is it someone who has just done a degree?

What do jobs look like for editors in the industry?

I am more interested in, what I believe is called, structural or developmental editing on books. But any info is welcome.

It seems there is little solid guidance in citing the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) using AMA. There are some guidelines on the USP website but not necessarily AMA.

The date of access is not available but what do you all think? Have you had to cite the USP?

I have a BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing (Fiction focused). I have experience working in a writing center but no actual portfolio items.

I can do academic and creative writing, have a light training in grant writing (need to brush up on it). But how do I build my portfolio when I have nothing to start with?

As part of an Editorial Assistant job application, I am required to submit an editing sample. But I do not happen to have any. In cases where an author says "said something like." For example: He said something like "I hate tennis shoes." Is there a comma after "like"? I can't seem to find an answer in Chicago or anywhere else.

Also, in a related question, what about after "thinking"? For example: He was thinking Why can't I find my phone? I know there should be a comma if it's "He thought, I can't find my phone" but I'm not sure if the same is true for "He was thinking."
