Cuteness Overload After I lost my beloved conure 2 years ago I finally adopted a new baby to love!

Hey everyone!

I’m a long time lurker and commenter, but I’m posting this great update in my life! I’ve adopted a 3 month old green cheek conure today and I’m just so thrilled. Recently, I have been scrolling through my old videos and pictures of my Peaches. He was 8 years old and my neighbors never warned us that they were releasing toxins into the air, toxins that went into the house and ended the lives of my Peaches and 2 rats. He was my bestest friend, and my current boyfriend is the ONLY other person besides myself that could handle Peaches.

Now we meet this baby girl! I haven’t thought of a name, but I know I want it to be nerdy and from one of my many favorite video games! She’s been sitting in my local pet store since she was about a month old and I visited her often enough that she eventually got excited to see me and upset when I left. I couldn’t keep breaking her heart and my own, so I caved in and used my tattoo savings!

Injured Bird Harley Quinn grew ALL his feathers back!

I tagged as injured, but that's so anyone triggered by images of plucking can avoid it. He's not injured. He was, at most, sick.

The 3rd and 4th pictures are from December 2024. He had actually grown a few feathers back on his belly after a brief break, but was much worse within a week. Harley Quinn was 19 years old. He had started seriously plucking and we couldn't get him to stop. We'd been to 2 different vets and no permanent solution was provided. We had tried meloxicab (3 ml) and gabapentin (0.02 ml), but by themselves they weren't working. He'd get better, then worse, again. He eventually had NO feathers from just below his chest - including his legs, his entire back under his wings, and was starting to completely pluck everything from his wings (except the flight feathers).

We finally found a new vet and they suggested several things:

  • Higher dose of gabapentin for pain
  • X-rays to check for abnormalities (5th & 6th pictures; I could hear him SCREAMING from the other room when they took the x-rays. It was terrible)
  • Treat for bornavirus

He was diagnosed with arteriosclerosis from the x-rays, given a couple injections of celecoxib for the bornavirus (yeah, he screamed from those, too. He wouldn't even look at me for a couple hours afterwards), and permanent daily medications:

  • 0.04 ml gabapentin twice a day (general pain; he's 21 years old - hatched in March 2005)
  • 0.03 ml isoxsuprine hcl twice a day (for the arteriosclerosis)
  • 0.02 ml celecoxib once a day (for the bornavirus)

The first 2 pictures show how he's regrown ALL his feathers. He's even doing short flights and is overall acting like a much younger bird, again.

I'm not saying this treatment will work for other cases of plucking, but it worked wonders for Harley.

Edit: corrected dosage values

Actually heinous behavior. Turned around for legitimately 1 sec to fill up his water bowl so I can give him his new bowls this morning... and then all I hear is a loud clang... then he hit this stance. 🤨

Advice What type of conure?

We're bringing home this 3 month old baby later this week. We were told she's a Jenday but Google is telling us she's a Sun Conure because there's yellow on her wings and an orange spot at the top of both wings (more on left wing) and more orange on belly.

What're your thoughts? Recommendations on first few days home?

Tricks & Training Smart Birbs

I've been keeping a pet cockatiel for a couple of months now, and while she's very sweet and steps up on my finger whenever i go to her, I've not yet been able to train her past that.

In comparison, my conures which for the first 2 weeks would get a heart attack if i so much as looked at them are now chasing me around the house. They're really smart birds!

I use sunflower seeds to entice them.

Bramble likes hiding in my hair lol. He cosies up to the side of my neck and makes happy noises, until I move, then he bites me.

Still having a load of biting problems with him though, little bugger. We're currently sat in front of his new climbing tree in the hopes he eventually hops on it.

What is my female sun conure doing with its mouth? Just noticed this. The other male is fine.

Update: Now normal. Probably something stuck in the mouth.

Cuteness Overload this little birb flew into my life a few weeks ago and adopted me. i have never been happier.

a few weeks ago i found this green cheeked conure in my yard and took him in. i tried to find his owner but to no avail. it didn’t take very long before we both became friends and attached to each other. i have never owned a pet before but always wanted one deeply and felt a pet would improve my mental health. i live with my parents and they have always been against pets but this little birb melted their hearts too and allowed me to keep him if the owner never came forward.

i have purchased him a nice cage and plenty of toys and been spending lots of time learning about conures and how to care for them. i have decided to name him apple jack! i have no idea actually if he is a boy or girl nor how old he is but for some reason i think he is a boy lol. id say i adopted apple jack but really he adopted me. i admit i have been struggling a lot with depression, i have my whole life, but apple jack has been the light of my life these past few weeks. he has given me a reason to get up every day and live, to care for him and give him the best life possible and he brings me tremendous joy. i never really considered a bird as a pet before but now i understand why they are so beloved. sometimes i just want to cry over how cute and affectionate he is. and it still breaks my heart to hear him cry when i leave or something but i am doing my best not to run to him and teach him it’s okay to be alone in his cage.

thanks for reading this if you did, i just wanted to share how much i love this lil guy💜

Advice How do I make my conure stop attacking me when I'm gaming/stop trying to ruin my setup?

I get that he's doing it for attention, but it's gotten to the point that I'm considering selling him. It's not like I don't pay attention to him, but this makes me want to interact with him less and less since gaming is my main hobby and I can't even play for any amount of time without him getting aggressive. he's injured me and drawn blood from me on multiple occasions.

Side note: I've come to the conclusion that conures are not the parrot for me (I have other species that I much prefer the temperament of), but I can't exactly put him up for adoption since the standard of care where I'm from for parrots is very bad. I'm sure practically no one would feed him his proper diet and give him his proper set up but me, and I've had him for a few years, so ofc I feel bad.
