Terrarium Update! July 2026- original post

Thank you so much for your help! This has been a fun project reviving my grandmothers 1970s terrarium. I’ve got a long way to go but it looks so much healthier already.

In Nov 2025, I refreshed the terrarium with mashed up creeping Charlie, moss, dead leaves, and other clippings from the yard. I also put in some sticks. The blender blew out (whoops! But also the blender was 40+ years old) so I mashed everything as good as I could

I don’t live nearby so I only check in every month or so. I’m the only person in my family who’s doing anything to the terrarium.

In March/ April there was a happy colony of white bugs living inside. Very foggy inside.

In May noticed the existing plants were much more lush.

Same lushness now in July as I visit. It was pretty foggy. White bugs still there but far fewer

Each time I visit, I take the top off to let it air out for a few hours. Today I put the terrarium outside since it was extra foggy- it got caught in the rain!

I can tell the original plants are much happier. But I’d like to see more plants growing. Since there haven’t been any new plants, I got more clippings from the yard to put inside. This included some clover seed pods and a couple with roots attached. Hoping this will encourage some new growth!

I also turned the terrarium 180 degrees hoping it will encourage growth other places

All ideas appreciated! This is a slow motion project, I’d love to see some more plants pop up next time I visit.

Im so loving this hobby. Foraging on the rainy day in deep forest was something that got me deeply immersed even though that constant scanning evaluating and constant attention to surrounding was tiring. Failed my first attempt and almost rage quit. Happy i didnt give up and managed to get it done even unperfectly. It's entirely wild terrarium made with 100% natural ingredients. Already identified some tiny creatures like small snail, mites, some fungal fly and possible springtails. Cant wait to see what emerges from this. Might be total chaos and most likely fails entirely but still curious to know.

This fella seems to be growing real fast. Should I be doing anything so it doesn’t out grow the jar? New to this.

Hi guys, this closed terrarium has been going for 4 months now, and we just realized these white fuzzy spots on the moss. I can’t tell if they are mold or roots wrapped around it. Please help me!

This is my second attempt. Starts out clear and healthy and about 2 weeks in starts to get very cloudy and everything dies. Have a light that runs for 8 hrs. Pics from day 3 to day 15. Any advice appreciated.

I decided to make a closed living vivarium in this pickle jar. I got some ideas for a little staging. I even found a little mushroom cap and crushed it in there in hopes the spores will spread.

Can't wait to watch it do it's thing! Thanks for the inspiration!

I only open it to clean it. It used to be bare but now it's lush with moss only because I forgot about it and it sits in direct sunlight for max 5h
