I recently decided to try out Hammurabi because I thought it would be fun to speed run science while all the other players were stuck in the Stone Age. It was not the cakewalk this community portrayed it to be.
My plan was to isolate myself for the most part while being friendly with any civ who comes near me and that worked. I never had anything other than positive interactions with other civs in the game.
I was trying to read ahead on the tech tree and map out all the eurekas I would need to unlock the tech to get me to Mars.
For crying out loud the production was absolutely abysmal!! I was not generating nearly as much gold, faith or production as I would have expected. The lack of science was expected but did not bother me because I knew I could boost through with eurekas.
But even then, you have to produce buildings, units and districts to get those powerful boosts and it was taking FOREVER to build/buy anything.
I had my traders all running internal routes just to get the city production high enough to produce anything but it was very hard to crank out pointless units I knew I wouldn’t use (and seek out barbs to kill with said units) when I wanted to actually advance my cities and science.
Eventually I met Pericles who was the only leader remotely hostile to me and his science was off the charts. Still, though I had already unlocked spacefaring and built three spaceports (blasting through dozens of builders to chop all the woods around to get the dang things built!).
Once I launched my first satellite I was alone on the science victory screen as the only person exploring the final frontier. So I felt good about my chances of winning.
At this point I was around turn 300 which was a shockingly late turn to still hope to win, but still I was ahead of everyone else.
Unfortunately, I hit a snag because some of the later techs I needed had to be boosted with spies or great people. Little did I know, this delay was all Pericles needed to slingshot past me and finish the science win while I was still 20+ turns away on my Mars missions.
It was infuriating to have played so long and grinded so much to still lose by so much!
What did I get wrong? Why do people say Hammurabi is broken when the lack of every kind of production more than makes up for the science boost you get with eurekas?! Or did I just get an unlucky start location? Admittedly it was pretty barren.
EDIT: After reading everyone’s comments I’m realizing now what I did not know before: the broken part of Hammurabi is not his ability to advance in science (at least not for a science win) his ability to get advanced WAR units much earlier than anyone else. It feels silly I didn’t realize that before but here we are. As for the production issue, I spawned in a pretty barren area and was kind of freestyling to try to boost my way to a science type win and wasn’t really paying attention to what the most logical order was to maximize my production (such as building mines to get industrial zones, etc.). If I try it again I will have a much better idea of what to do. Thanks!
