They are sooo mad theres a black girl and a trans person in this movie.

Anyone else immediately thought of this? I am now convinced in my own headcanon that this is the only reason why Nolan decided to leave the horse so close to the shoreline.

I've spent the last week trying to find somewhere in Europe to see The Odyssey in its native 1.43:1, and I've ended up stuck on a question nobody seems able to answer.

Quick recap of the format tiers:

- IMAX 70mm (15-perf film) — native 1.43:1, the full frame

- IMAX with Laser GT (dual projector) — digital, also 1.43:1

- IMAX with Laser, single projector (CoLa/XT) — 1.90:1, cropped

- IMAX Digital (xenon, ~2K) — 1.90:1, cropped

The film was shot open-matte for 1.43:1, so anything below the top two tiers isn't just softer. It's missing picture from the top and bottom of the frame. Scenes composed for the full height get trimmed.

Here's what I don't get. A 1.90:1 screen could pillarbox the tall frame instead: use the projector's full chip height, address only the center portion of the width, black bars on the left and right. Smaller image, but the entire composition. The geometry works fine (see the diagram).

As far as I can tell, the blocker isn't technical. IMAX simply doesn't distribute the tall master to those venues. Single-laser and xenon houses receive a 1.90:1 DCP that's a genuine reframe, not the 1.43 file with bars added. They physically couldn't show the full frame even if the projectionist wanted to.

I understand the business logic. A filled screen looks more impressive than a pillarboxed one, especially in a converted multiplex auditorium, and keeping 1.43:1 scarce is exactly what makes people travel for it.

But it stings when you're the one doing the travelling. There are three cinemas in the entire EU showing this on 70mm: Prague, Brussels, Montpellier. I'm in Austria, so the nearest complete version of the movie is a four-hour drive. Meanwhile there's an IMAX twenty minutes from me that could put the whole frame on screen with bars and simply isn't allowed to.

Just give people the choice. One clearly labelled off-peak screening a week. Some of us would take the bars happily.

So: is there an actual technical blocker I'm missing — brightness, masking, projector alignment, licensing — or is this purely a distribution decision?

My god. I won’t give away any spoilers here, but this was peak. I was shaking during it. My Apple Watch was screaming at me that my heart rate was too high lol. Just superb

What an amazing movie. Absolute Cinema. Love how the movie shows Troy.

one thing I see a lot of people saying / interpreting is that Athena took on the guise of Zendaya (temple priestess that got beheaded) to essentially haunt Matt Damon. But before I read anything and during that reveal I instantly thought that Zendaya was Athena incarnate.

During the movie it is mentioned a couple times that Zeus law is in place partially because anyone could be a god in disguise. I think the final reveal is meant to say that Athena was the priestess in disguise living in the temple in troy and that it wasn't Athena taking on the guise of the random priestess.

easily the most experimental score from a Nolan movie since maybe Dunkirk??

For me, a Christopher Nolan adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 would be my dream project from him. It remains my favourite book of all time, and I am fascinated by how Nolan would bring Oceania to life. Besides horror and helicopter cops, where would you like Christopher Nolan to go next?

Cause Odyssey is one of the best cinematic experiences I have ever had in my life. Saw in regular IMAX and the cinamagrophy/sound was spectacular. This is my 6th Nolan movie in theaters but I skipped on Oppenheimer and Tenet.

The fastest 3 hour movie I ever saw in my life. Everyone was good, even Travis Scott lol.

And Ludwig absolutely killed it once again.

I think some of the initial feedback of the score has been somewhat mixed. I was also not entirely enchanted after the first listen but I got it on vinyl and my opinion has changed. I've listened to it much more closely and after having understood Ludwig's objective (minus an orchestra), it's still a fascinating and very good score. I loved Oppenheimer's score and think it is superb, every track is unique and impeccably composed and arranged - I talk about this score all the time, it changed my life. I also noticed some parts of the Odyssey's score that have similar structures to Oppenheimer's score (which is a good thing and a nice touch by Ludwig and his team). I really enjoy the following tracks: Ithaca, Penelope, Sirens, Troy, Bringing it All, Odysseus, and Chasing the Escaping Sun. Some tracks that didn't land with me are : Laestrygonians, Circe, Hades, Apollo's Island. Maybe, they will grow on me with repeated listens. I think if any other music director would have done this, it would have been very formulaic and predictable. Ludwig is quite clever in his compositions and has done something that may stand out over time.
