This is my first post on Reddit and I wanted to introduce Ally, she is 8 years old. She suffers from hip dysplasia and now onset arthritis. But she is very cute, happy and healthy. It took me 4 vet appointments for them to take me seriously that something wasn’t right but we got there in the end! ( It took my partner who takes no nonsense and can’t deal with my panic for someone to listen to me ) I am treated like an over protective parent when it comes to my cats but I have never taken them without serious cause. Does anyone else get treated like this!?

....how much my new kitten has cost me. Not even including the adoption cost.

I have brought more or less everything twice now in about 8 weeks.

Got an enclosed top access litter tray, he doesn't like an enclosed litter tray. It was causing him to hold it and leak slightly, had to get an open tray.

Brought food and water bowls but he is a gluttonous sod and was eating everything too quickly causing food to go through him so replaced with slow feeder bowls and an automatic feeder to control his dry food portions.

Automatic feeder wasn't air tight so food was going stale quickly especially in this heat, so had to replace that with a unit with an air tight seal and space for a moisture absorber.

Brought a cat tree as everyone told me cats like to climb and it would save my sofa some. He only climbs on it if i put treats or toys onto it.

Wands, he loves a wand. Chews right through the string so had to replace all those with ones without string.

Brought a snuffle matt for treats and enrichment, just tore it apart to get at the treats.

On treats, I got a treat ball. He figured out how to roll it back and forth and empty it quickly in less than 15 minutes.

Brought a water fountain as everyone said they encourage drinking. Uses it as a fun paddling pool.

And that's just what I can reel off now. I mean I love the little bugger, but I genuinely don't remember my previous kitten I had for 12 years being half this difficult and fussy haha.

Cat tax

We have x2 cats, they are approximately 11.5 years old (we are unsure of age when we adopted them but we’ve had them 10 years).

They currently eat Felix cat food, but we think it’s no longer agreeing with their stomachs and causing the occasional diarrhoea. Looking for some recommendations of wet cat food for senior cats - ideally ones I can buy in bulk either online or in store somewhere as I normally buy the big 40 poaches of Felix from Tesco. They can’t have whiskers has this makes them all itchy / scabby.

So my cat has decided the corner of my living room is his new litter tray. What are the most effective ways to get rid of the smell, both for my sake and hopefully to dissuade him from peeing there?

So we have two female cats, they’re are my world. We’ve had them for years. One is a semi indoor cat, and one is an outdoor cat.

A couple of years ago, there was this stray boy cat that started turning up in our garden. He didn’t look in the best condition when he would turn up. The first time he looked awful, but we couldn’t get close enough to do anything. Despite the fact that he’d prowl after our cat, we used to feed him and give him fresh water, make sure he was ok. My cat got used to him and so did he, and then they used to sit near each other in the garden. Our semi indoor cat didn’t like him, so we couldn’t take him in.

For years, he’d stop by our garden every day to eat and he would meow for us to see him and brush up against us. My mother built him a little box home for him to sleep in when it was cold, he used it. He even had his own blanket. Then one day he stopped coming. I haven’t seen him since. I could sense that he had passed as soon as he didn’t turn up for his food. It had become daily at that point. I didn’t think I was so attached to him, because he did have a couple of fights with my cat… but I was sad for while and eventually moved on. At least I thought I did.

Today, years later, I open my phone, and a photo of him pops up on my featured photos. I start absolutely bawling my eyes out. I miss him so much. Seeing how neglected he was at first, compared to how happy and healthier he looked after giving him food and pets and love. Letting him lay next to me whilst I sat out in the garden. He wasn’t even my cat and I just wish I knew what happened to him. I hope it was natural. I feel so guilty that I didn’t take him in. For at least over two years, he came to my garden for safe haven and it just destroyed me seeing his little face on my camera roll today. I thought I had finished mourning him, but I guess you never get over death. Even for a cat. I’d hate to think how bad it’ll be when my girls pass. They’ve been with me since I was a child. I’d be devastated.

I just wished cats knew how much we love them.

I found a cat near my house, it’s near 2 very busy main roads in the Salford/Manchester border area.

He is about 6 months old, unneutered and has no collar on. He is the most affectionate little cat I’ve ever met (he is currently asleep in my lap). I just can’t bring myself to let him outside and risk him getting hurt. I tried to walk with him round the neighbourhood but he just followed me home.

He’s not injured or stressed and I’ve gave him some water and a small piece of plain chicken. I’m going to get him scanned at the vets tomorrow morning.

I feel bad I’m stealing someone’s cat for the night and they’re worried??

Hi, I have just adopted our neighbour's cat and when going on Petlog to update the chip with my information they want to charge me £39 for "transfer of keepership". Has anyone on here done this and had to pay the fee or is there a way around it? Thankful for any advice

I ended up with 5 cats.. all were rescues.. few were fighting injuries, some were just in horrible conditions .. couldn’t get much help with adoption.. now it has become overwhelming.. my friends and family judge us.. people around me are not really animal lovers so they literally call us out saying we have ruined our life. I can’t make adhoc plans to go out since I have to arrange for boarding .. and boarding here in India is very expensive.. sometime I end up paying 10-15% my trip budget on boarding alone .. plus there is added issue of 2 of my cats peeing outside litter .. daily multiple times I have to keep cleaning it up .. smell becomes problem.. I have 6 litter boxes , air purifier.. we clean litter timely ..
already visited vet and there are no medical issues .. I love my cats and wouldn’t think of abandoning them after so many years .. but I would appreciate if anyone going through similar situation could share their input ..

Every cat seems to have at least one completely bizarre habit that sounds made up until someone witnesses it. What's yours?

I’m looking for some reassurance or to hear if anyone has experienced something similar.
My 4-month-old kitten is 4 days post-spay. She’s honestly been recovering really well; eating normally, drinking well, playing, bird watching, affectionate, purring, trilling, and the incision looks clean and healthy. She doesn’t seem to be in pain.

Today, she had one bowel movement right in front of her litter box instead of inside it. She didn’t even step into the tray. This is the first time she’s ever done this.

A few bits of context:
I changed her litter about 3 days ago to start transitioning to wood pellets, but I left a layer of her old litter on top. She had been using the tray normally for the last 3 days after the change.
She has been urinating normally in the litter box as far as I know, and I haven’t found urine anywhere else.
She has only had this one accident.

I’m trying not to overreact, but I’m wondering if this could just be a one-off related to recovering from surgery, or whether I should be worried about the litter change or something else.

Has anyone else’s kitten had an isolated accident like this after a spay and then gone straight back to normal?

Hi everyone, I’m in the UK and could really use some advice as I’m becoming quite worried. I found some fleas on my 18 week old indoor kitten at the start of this month due to flea dirt and noticing her scratching. My vet perscribed her flea treatment (credelio) and since then I’ve vacuumed everywhere and used indorex flea spray around her house. I flea combed her and gave her a bath and i thought things were okay but that was until today when I found a flea on her when I was stroking her although the strange thing is that when I flea comb her I catch nothing! I don’t find any flea dirt on her or in her usual spots either.

One thing that might be relevant is that she weighed less when she had the credelio tablet and now she’s around 2kg so I’m wondering if she needs the next weight band when her next dose is due. She has a vet appointment Saturday so I’ll mention something then but I’d really appreciate any advice. Thank you!

I'm sorry if this is a very unreasonable rant but I'm just at the end of my tether with cat shelters. Myself and my partner (both 24) are living in a flat and have lots of extra love to give to a little furry friend so we want to get a cat. We both work from home and can provide the cat with lots of enrichment and spoil it rotten. We want to adopt a cat to give a home to a cat that is waiting rather than buy a cat and contribute to stray problem. However I feel like it is literally impossible to adopt a cat as a flat owner.

We have access to the outdoors and can take the cat there whenever it wants but as we are on the 2nd floor we don't have a garden and cat flap. Every single shelter seems to have it as a non-negotiable for you to have a garden. Often we call up about cats which have always been indoor cats before being turned over to the shelter and then we get told that the shelter refuse to re-home to somewhere without a garden even though the cat is an indoor cat. I know there are cats with FIV but I feel like as a first time cat owner it's a bit like a baptism by fire to get a cat with FIV. We are open to cats with mobility issues but again lots of those cats will only be rehomed to somewhere with a garden.

I really want to adopt our cat but it is feeling like no-one will let us, and it's looking like the only option is to buy a cat. I know the whole indoor/outdoor debate is ongoing but I didn't realise how being in a flat would discount us as eligible before we can even try :(

I adopted a 12 week old kitten recently and have been doing scent swapping and site swapping since I brought her home. We've now started doing mealtimes together with my two resident cats with the kitten in a mesh playpen.

There's been a lot of growling from kitten, she seems terrified of my resident cats. My female cat seems interested but will hiss back at kitten, but hissing has decreased from kitten in general every mealtime. My male cat is extremely wary and is quite fearful when kitten growls and hisses him, but he's an anxious cat overall anyway. In general, my resident cats seem so curious about her, there's no aggression from them whatsoever at this point

I'm using a feliway in that room and using treats to encourage them all.

I'm just wondering what the best thing to do is moving forward? Keep doing what I'm doing or is there anything I can do to encourage harmony?

Basically, I live with my parents and siblings but I take care of 99% of everything related to our cat. the issue I'm currently facing is the litterbox situation.

So for most of the part, he's always done his business in the garden except when he was a kitten. He's 4 now.

But recently, I started using litter again. My house is carpeted everywhere except the kitchen and bathrooms so naturally, the litterbox is in one of those places, in this case the kitchen (the kitchen is decently big) because the bathrooms are apparently out of questions per my mother.

Anyway, so I do the scooping and filling, but here's the issue.

He poos/pees in the early hours of the morning when I'm asleep. My parents wake up way before me and they put the litterbox out in the garden. So by the time I wake up, there's a bunch of flies there and I've put up with scooping in those circumstances a few times but I can't anymore. it's overstimulating and disgusting for me.

Then during the day, the kitchen is in use and my mother doesn't want the smell of his business in there so she wants me to keep the litterbox outside. that would be fine except it's not like I'm checking it every 10 mins to see whether he left a gift there for the flies. So again, by the time I find out he peed or pooed, there's a bunch of flies.

1. it's disgusting having to scoop amidst flies + tough it out with the smell

2. it's not sanitary for neither me nor the cat

3. I feel really really dirty afterwards and I'm not a fan of showering after every time I scoop the box

so what do I do?

edit: not to mention the days when I'm not even at home...

edit: the litter is alright in my opinion. but the thing is, my cat sometimes doesn't hide all of the poo. so that ends up attracting the flies. because all the times that the excrement was hidden well, there were minimal.

I removed the bedding to wash it. They’ve decided to have a meeting about it urgently. they have a bed on top of the cat tower. One a bed on the floor. But this twisted/folded bath mat is apparently their perch of choice

(I know the cone looks big. He is able to eat and drink with it on and the vet approves of it due to it protecting his neck it has to sit quite low down due to a neck scratch so none of you worry)

Hi all - I have a cat that has a bit of dermatitis atm so I have got some Johnson's tea tree cream (petsathome.com/product/johnsons-tea-tree-skin-cream-for-dogs-and-cats-tub/15326P) to put on her, but everything on the internet says tea tree is toxic so not sure if this safe to use or not. If not, how is it being sold as a topical ointment for cats?? Thanks

Poor babies dumped and full of fleas. I was going to keep one and give the other to a friend but I fear they share the same brain cell, and they’re completely bonded so now I have two kittens. Anyone else found their cats?

I feel like every cat starts with one proper name and somehow ends up with about ten completely unrelated nicknames.
