Every hex has five dots. The doubling of numbers does help speed up the game some.

Dawn of Humankind with 6 players

Last year somebody asked if it can be done and I finally tried it.

It works but also takes quite some more time.

All starting points in Africa are used in the beginning.

After 2 and a half hours it got late and we decided that orange won with 6VPs.

Next time we'll use a turn timer.

Most players were playing for the first time so next time it will surely go faster.

It could work with 7-8 players too, but everyone starts with 2 camps instead of 3 and then playing on a time limit becomes a must.

Oh my god that was stress-inducing [How could I have played better?]

I started on the 2/6/9 and 5/9/10 settlements, rushing to 2/5/10. I got somewhat lucky with robber placements and getting a couple of 2s early game. Opponent was one point (and likely 1-2 turns) from winning. Ports helped tremendously late-game. Any way I could have played better? Let me know if you have any questions about my gameplay! I am 1500 elo for reference. Luck or skill?

Settlers of America right price?

Someone in my area has Settlers of America first edition for about $17 USD. It's rare to get games in English where I am so that's a consideration. Box is in very bad shape but actual game materials look fine. What do you think?

In addition to the main game, good variants for this out there? If I take materials from my other Catan games, could I play a US map like on Colonists.io?

Traders and barbarians rules

I’m a bit confused if I deliver the commodity is it worth a vp for each one? The rules state that but I’m not sure.

My friend had 11 roads and only 2VP

Yes, you heard that right. He somehow managed to have no settlements and have a total of 11 roads. It’s not like he’s a beginner either. He has over 200 games on the app. But he’s def not great…. Obviously. Idk why you’d choose to continue going for longest road. Though he did get blocked off. Either way, he doesn’t have a good excuse for losing this bad. We all bullied him for a while after. Had a great laugh. 🤣

A comeback

4 players. I was at 4 points forever. No access to ore for 90 percent of the game. One player had 8 and another had 9 points relatively quickly. I didn't get my first ore for over an hour. Then the tides turned. I got access to ore as seen in the picture and the 2-1 wood trade in. Then came the cities and the 9s were plentiful. I went from accepting defeat 40 minutes into the game to making the greatest comeback in Catan that I've ever seen! Twas truly a legendary performance! 🫡😂

Are there any alternative rules that make the later stages of the game less one-sided?

It often feels like one or two players are doomed but have to drag themselves along while the one or two leaders battle it out slowly. are there ways to avoid that without ruining the game?

I built a Catan Assistant for Colonist.io - looking for beta testers

Hey all,

I've been working on a Chrome extension for Colonist.io and it's finally at a point where I want eyes on it from people who actually play a lot.

It's a strategy assistant. It scores your opening placements across the classic strategies, keeps the full game state in front of you, and tells you when there's a win sitting on the board, so you can spend your focus on the decisions that matter instead of the bookkeeping. Everything it uses is public game-log info, nothing hidden, and it never takes a turn for you. More of a coach than an autopilot.

Here's what it does:

  • Opening placement. It scores every spot on the board across the classic strategies and draws the strongest picks right onto the board, with the reasoning in a side panel. After your first settlement it re-ranks the best second spot. Think of it as a suggestion to make better placement decisions
  • Card counting. It reads the log and reconstructs every player's hand, so you've always got their card counts, and the exact resources wherever you can deduce them from trades, builds, robs, and starting hands. Your own hand is shown in full.
  • Bank tracking. It keeps a running count of what's left in the bank for each resource, so you know when something's about to dry up.
  • Dev card tallies. A live count of dev cards bought and played around the table, plus an estimated of how many VP are out already and what is left in the deck
  • Trade Assistance. Calculates the value of trades offered by other players and recommends take/counter/pass.
  • 7-roll tools. It marks hexes that would rob yourself, flags dead robs where opponents have nothing, and points you to the best steal target for whatever resource you're after.
  • Winning-move alerts. It catches every way you could hit 10 the moment it's possible: building your last point, getting there through a trade, picking up Largest Army or Longest Road, playing a dev card, or some mix of those. It pins the alert over End Turn so you don't accidentally pass up the win.
  • Live stats. A dice histogram and a per-opponent breakdown of who's been robbing you and for what, updating as you play. There's also opt-in win/loss tracking by strategy and game mode across your games.

It's a learning and decision-support tool. You still make every call, it just keeps the whole table in front of you and surfaces stuff you might've missed.

It's still in beta so I'm keeping this small, looking for 5 testers tops. If you want in, DM me here on Reddit and I'll send the install link and steps. Honest feedback is the whole point, so "this broke" is exactly what I want to hear.

Thanks!

Looking for folks to play with on Table Top Simulator (Steam)

Hey folks. I will keep this short. I absolutely adore playing Catan. If I can I like to play it a couple times a week. That very rarely happens because I often don’t have a group to play it with. I recently got really into the city’s and knights expansion. I was wondering if anyone is up to play it on table top simulator on steam. Feel free to message here!
