I've been reading more about carbon fiber lately, and it seems like a lot of people assume it's always the strongest or the best material for every application.

In your experience, what's the biggest misconception about carbon fiber that you hear most often?

I'd love to hear from engineers, manufacturers, hobbyists, or anyone who's worked with composites.

First time poster here. A friend of mine gave me this carbon fibre boser hood for a mk4 Jetta over 10 years. It was already beaten up when he gave it to me. I don’t know anything about carbon fibre. Is this something that can be fixed and used again? Or is it trash?

Do I just sand down, fill with epoxy, then sand down again? I haven’t had it clear coated, and I don’t believe Seibon hoods come clear coated, I’m sorry I’ve never attempted to fix carbon, any tips would be greatly appreciated 😞🙏

Hey yall...im new to this carbon fiber trend and dont know too much about it other then it looks nice lol. I was wondering if yall could tell me if this looks like high quality carbon? I found its a lot darker (almost black) compared to other carbon diffusers where its more of a grey ish color and shines more.

Hello, I am making an almost entirely carbon fiber exterior airplane. I live in hotter weather (~30C with strong sun) - should I worry about my resin, which has current glass transition of about 45-50C?

I’ve been sanding this wing for a while now about 2.5 weeks here n there. Started with 320grit then 600, 1200, and then 2000 which I’m on rn ik I didnt have todo this much but its an old carbon wing and wanted to make sure it comes out looking good yall think its ready? There are some scratches but clear coat will hide those right? I tried to make it as uniform as possible but they are just to deep. I know I went to deep on some parts just wasn’t much apoxy in those spots

Original part came out ok-ish but I'm thinking about doing a mirror part in two part mould. What do you think?

Hey guys, I’m still new to mold making so I figured id ask what you guys would’ve done to make this mirror cap. This is my attempt, let me know what you guys would’ve done or changed.

This is a 04 accord 2 door.

This hood is carbon fiber but as you can tell it has been fcked by 20+ years of fading and sun damage.

The white stuff is a failed wax that I tried to do myself.

Anyways, how cooked is this carbon fiber hood and is it repairable by DIY, if so, what can I do to restore it?

I recently made this carbon fiber wing and noticed, in direct sunlight, these „dust“ specs trapped under the epoxy all over the part.

My theories:

-Dust from sanding
-Air bubbles
-Residue from spray glue

I 3D printed the mold, coated it in epoxy and sanded to remove layer lines and seal the mold. Afterwards I applied PVA mold release agent with a roller.

For the layup I used easy fusion fix gp2 spray glue.
Then resin infusion.

Initially I thought it was dust from Sanding but I’m pretty sure I wiped everything down well…

I have a question regarding large composite mould vacuum bagging. Currently were having an issue where were trying to seal a split mould similair to the shape of a boat hull that has 12 pieces and spans a total length of 6m x 2m with a height of about 1.5m against the floor. The reason were trying it against the floor is that we thought that we want to cover the entire mould as it is easier to look for leaks specifically between the sealant tape and the floor however we soon found out there were loads. Would anyone have a suggestion about what we could possibly put on the floor or another solution to seal a vacuum bag against a mould our size? The reason we dont want to silicone the splits and then apply the vacuum to the edges is that it will be difficult to get off and we never ended up having a consistent seal. Thanks

I have an older carbon fibre bike fork which has two metal inserts (I'm fairly sure they are aluminum but will check before proceeding), in which two bolts have snapped off clean, leaving them stuck and the inserts unable to be used. I have tried basic extraction methods, but given the difficulty of securely attaching a weird shaped object like a bike fork to a milling machine or drill press, I haven't had much success. Bike shops won't touch it, so I'm thinking of chemically removing them with something like potassium alum or sodium hydroxide. Are there any acids known to be completely inert with carbon fibre even with extended exposure (would probably need to be warm and for 24+ hours). I figured it might to some extent depend on the resin being used, but have no idea how to check that.

Hey guys, I’m making my first ever traditional fiber glass mould, I’m having a very hard time getting the fiber glass around the sharp edges of the emblem and I’m not able to get the bubbles out as you see from the picture, any tips?
