Politics We need more than reports

If the city and the state can send over 20 cops to confront me for my various activities, I have full confidence they can spare the personnel to enforce traffic laws.

I have shown across my video how cheaply it can be done and how much revenue can be made.

We need more than transparency reports. We need them to start building and fast. They are supposed to be smart people running one of the best educated states. So where is the investment in mass transit, cycling, health protections, and climate proofing?

Discussion MA law against teachers earning Social Security

I just learned that MA is one of the remaining 15 states (along with Alaska, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas) whose public schools do not pay into—nor earn benefits from—Social Security.

The amendment to Social Security to include municipal workers was passed in the 50's... why are we still living in an ancient paradigm set up to preclude some of America's unsung heroes?

I understand that the argument is that pension plans provide equal or better retirement payouts—but that's only if you're working for 20+ years. Burnout happens well before then, but teachers who don't hit that milestone will have nothing to show for their time in the classroom?

My question is if there is or has recently been any legislation to change this in MA? If so, where does it stand? If not, why not?

Inquiry Meal Donation

I can get a lot of free delivered meals through my work but usually never take advantage of it because I don’t want to waste food I don’t need. However, I know there are a lot of people in need that could benefit from a meal and was wondering if there were any places I could safely drop off a meal for the homeless (ideally near Central Square as I live nearby). I feel like it would be awkward to just go up to people and ask them if they want food and I’m a young woman so would feel more comfortable if there was an alternative channel of getting the food to people who need it! Would appreciate any ideas.

Recommendations Looking to learn to swim and ride a bike (again)

Upvotes

Any low cost or free lessons I should be aware of? Thank you so much to anyone who helps. I'm trying to rebuild my life again after DV. I have gained a ton of weight and I'm looking to do something about it while retaining skills I once found freeing.

Transportation How was the commuter rail on day 1 of Red Line shutdown?

During the shutdown, the commuter rail is free from Porter to North Station. I'm curious how it was.

The Zucchini is back! I'd been hoping/waiting for the seasonal items to start popping back up on the Clover Food Lab menu and I'm very excited to see that the Zucchini has returned. 🎉

(Not an ad, just personally unreasonably excited about this and I know a lot of people said they were going to miss this sandwich specifically.)

The Red Line Shuttle to Harvard Square from South Station?

I work at the university, but I don't live in Cambridge or in the general Boston area. I take the commuter rail to go home. Last night, I was able to catch the express shuttle to South Station. Yesterday and today, when I arrived to South Station in the morning, I took an Uber to work. But is there also a morning express shuttle to Harvard Square from South Station? If so, what gate? Thanks!

Mido Matcha in Central Square Closed Down

A moment of silence for my favorite matcha spot in the Boston area.

Mido matcha only opened in January and already closed down. So sad to see.

Mizu matcha is taking over their space (honestly, probs saving Mizu a ton of $ on set-up).

I wonder if seeing Kyo Matcha prepping to open across the street caused them to re-evaluate if it was worth paying central square rent

missed connection east cambridge

Upvotes

we made eye contact after I walked up to the bus stop at cambridge st & third st. I was soaking wet in my green tee and jeans after the crazy rain and I returned your smile :)

we sat down next to each other on the bus and played a bit of eye tag but never said anything to each other. I didn't want to disturb you with your headphones on, but I liked the stickers you had on them. you had an orange sweatshirt and baggy capri jeans, and you made a phone call about trying to find some colorful ties (that sounds fun)

Transportation EV Charging New Overstay Fees

FYI! Public EV Charging Overstay Fees!

Per the City of Cambridge EV Charging webpage, and a paper flyer posted at charging stations: New Overstay Fees are in effect as of July 20, 2026. Fee details include:

  • Daytime 8am-8pm: After a vehicle’s battery reaches 100% full charge, drivers have a 60-minute grace period to move their vehicle. If their vehicle is not moved after 60 minutes, a $5 per hour fee is charged. No overstay fees are charged while a vehicle is actively charging.
  • Overnight 8pm-8am: No overstay fee charged.

Folks with the ChargePoint app can configure settins to be alerted when charging is completed as a reminder to move your vehicle to avoid the fee.

Parking in central square for a minute - only garages?

I work in Kendall and my girlfriend wants me to check for an item at the Gap in central square. Normally I’d take the T but it’s replaced by shuttle buses this week so I think I need to drive. Are my only options for parking a garage? Any other recommendations? TIA

Alewife Parkway Panhandlers

Hi there, does anyone know the best way to report the panhandlers on alewife going onto Route 2? Would calling the police be the best bet or something else?

One of the men seemed to have mental illness and was very aggressive/abusive to a woman in a car. They also are making fires in the woods. This is a pretty major public health issue.

Discussion Daily Table - one year later

Former Daily Table employee here from the central square location. I was wondering, how are people holding up a year later after the closing? I know the economy and inflation has gotten worse since then, and I know how expensive shopping elsewhere has been too. For me, it's been a little rough, but hanging in there. Managing.

How has it affected you personally? When we closed last year, I felt bad for the community and those who depended on the prices of the store. I got to know an old man who'd pop in once every week or so, and he was nice and a bit soft spoken. It was sad to see on the last day him walking around the store, looking at our barren food shelves, with tears in his eyes, with his hands behind his back. He didn't buy anything, of course, but I haven't been able to forget that. Another regular customer came in the same day, unaware of the closing. I told her why the shelves were empty and she got upset and basically snapped at me, asking "so how am I supposed to afford groceries now?".

I did hear from the now FORMER CEO, something exciting. She told me she'd like to bring something similar back to the community and that she's looking, talking around about what she can do to get it going again. So, hopefully something 🤞

Take care.

Cambridge driver are some of the most entitled individuals I’ve ever met and the fake survivability high horse doesn’t merit cosplay Tour de Florida emotional support vehicles and a shitty personality. If you’re offended by this I bet your coworkers are tired of seeing you in the morning.

PSA: Thai Hut closing in a couple weeks!

Have not seen this mentioned anywhere online: Thai Hut will close their current location on Beacon street because they can't afford the rent increase from their new property owner. They are moving to a town out west in MA. Last chance to dine there while they are still open!
