Announcement Update to moderation regarding to piracy (rule 4)

Despite the community rules being pretty clear on the topic, it seems a reminder is needed that this sub has a strict "no piracy" rule. Every day there are numerous posts and even more comments that are either seeking info on how to pirate books, wanting help in making use of books they've pirated, or are people flat out encouraging others to pirate and listing off websites where they can do it. Up until now those posts have simply been deleted as they've been seen, but going forward any users found ignoring rule 4 will be banned from the Calibre sub.

Calibre is a platform that helps everyone organize their eBooks and if you want a book bad enough to read it, you should want the author who wrote it to receive compensation for the work they put into it. If you don't, then this community isn't the place for you to brazenly discuss that moral failure.

Thank you to those who wish to continue keeping this sub in good standing with Reddit and on the right side of copyright laws and basic human decency. If that's not you, feel free to head on out. Thanks.

Edit: Well it's been a lovely day of people trying to argue that piracy is fine, or that removing DRM of books you own is just as much pirating as outright stealing a book you haven't paid for, but I've wasted more time than was worthwhile trying to reply to people. At the end of it all, rule 4 stands and this post was made to serve as a reminder of it and a warning of repercussions for ignoring it. That's it. To those who had civil discourse or expressed understanding of this, thank you.

General Discussion / Feedback What do you do with Read/DNF books?

I have a library of over 500 books and its growing.
About 40 of them have been read, a few DNF. I keep all of them on my kobo but i feel like this may be taking up unneeded storage. They all have annotations that I don't look at regularly but would like to have on hand.
When you finish a book do you keep it on your device, or do you remove it? I have a kobo libre. Does removing the read book affect the stats?

Im not quite sure what kind of routine to have. Keeping it in the Calibre library makes sense but even with the 'annotation' plug in I find I cannot view the annotations connected to the book unless the kobo is plugged in.
I should also note that everything is meticulously organized. Books grouped by genre, spice level, 'vibes', page number, and more. Book covers are always upgraded or changed to my prefered edition and all metadata is embedded and double-checked. Honestly doing that is an enjoyable hobby in its self.

Curious to see what others do with their books after theyve been read.

Edit to add picture.

Bug Help with Error: Cannot View (but file exists)

Upvotes

I'm having an issue with my Calibre library which I think was brought on by me rearranging and deleting things. Basically, I have multiple epubs (fanfic mostly) where when I try to view them I get the error below. However, I still have the file (some still there and some recovered from earlier library iternations) wiith the epub, but the number is incorrect (the new number ID is 2137, but the folder with the info has the ID 171). If anyone knows how to fix this I would appreciate it!

Support / How-To Kindle Colorsoft: Epubs and Dark Mode

I just bought the kindle colorsoft because target had an amazing deal on it. From what I’ve read the Colorsoft recently got a software upset that allowed for the whole thing to hard dark mode. I’ve also seen comments saying that you have to use calibre to turn epubs into kfx files for them to be in dark mode. Does anyone have any experience with their epub files on the kindle colorsoft AFTER the software update? I don’t use calibre so that work around is really a deal breaker for me and I would like to continue my send-to-kindle website addiction is possible. Ty in advance this is the 2nd subreddit I’ve posted this in idk if I need to mention that

Support / How-To DeDRMd comic into azw3 and it's stretched

Hello, I successfully removed the drm from two leftover books I had on my Kindle app. One of them, I was able to convert from kfx to ebook without issues. The other one is a comic and was imported into Calibre as an AZW3 file for some reason, and the images are stretched to the point of being unreadable. Is there any known fix? Did I do something wrong while removing the drm?

EDIT: solved, it was never even a problem. Calibre's reader rendered it that way, but on my device it looks totally fine. Go figure. Thanks anyway!

Support / How-To Some books not uploading to "docs"

Hello!

Obligatory, not sure if this is allowed. I looked through the rules and did a quick search but cannot find anything. If I missed it, I apologize.

I have some books that I want to upload to my Kindle library from Calibre and for some reason they are not going through. I have ensured they are epubs and have tried every "Send to Kindle" method I can find. I have sent over 20 books and only two are not going. Keep getting what appears to be a generic error code of "E999" which I have looked up but I am only getting with these two files. I have tried sending separately, together, even with other files. I have tried going from epub > AZW3 > epub and tried the Amazon Kindle Epub Fix site with still no luck.

When sent with other files, all of the files go through except these two.

Any ideas as to why?

TIA!

Support / How-To Transferring to New Account

I got a new kindle and I needed it on a new account. I was wondering if there is a way to use Calibre to transfer from on Kindle to another. Just under different accounts. And if there is a way to do it, how would you go about it?

General Discussion / Feedback Sutra is back in Europe! + Sneak Peek at CBZ & Panel-by-Panel Comic Support

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone, good news for those who asked: Apple finally approved the updated forms, and Sutra (my iOS reader for Calibre, Kavita and other OPDS feeds) is officially back in the European App Store!

Sneak Peek: CBZ & Smart Panel Support
I’m currently deep in the weeds building panel-by-panel comic support. As you can see in the attached comparison image, tapping the bottom-right icon isolates individual panels to fit your screen natively, making reading on smaller devices dramatically better.

Comics have wildly different panel definitions and chromas, so getting this consistent across my test bench is taking up all my free time outside of my day job and family. Because this is the core feature of the next update, I want it to be close to perfect before shipping - so the release may slip to next week.

Thanks to everyone using the app, and do let me know if you have any feedback on the preview!

Support / How-To Database disk image is malformed

Yesterday I put a bunch of books on my Kobo. Last night I went to read and none of the books show up. Today I went back to Calibre to see what's going on, and I got the above error message. The books do show when I look at my Kobo on the computer, but I can't find them anywhere on my device.

I don't know what that error means--it was fine yesterday. I don't know where to go from here, and the help Kobo is offering is only for books I purchased or borrowed from them. I did a sync and repair on the Kobo. Where do I go from here?

Support / How-To Deleting old version of Kindle book after editing metadata

When I edit the metadata for a Kindle book (e.g., cover or author name) that is already loaded onto my Kindle Paperwhite 11th generation and then send the edited version to my Kindle, I always end up with both the original and the edited versions. I can't find a way to delete the original off my Kindle other than permanently deleting it from my Amazon content. I see many suggestions in other posts to use a filter to show just the new one, but has anyone found a way to remove the older version other than permanently deleting?

Support / How-To Trouble with KFX to EPUB conversion

Hello, I'm for some reason not able to convert a KFX file (definitely DRM-free, I have both related plug ins) to EPUB. I'm encountering the following error:

ERROR: KFX conversion failed:
Cannot convert [name of the book]

KeyError('YJFragmentList item is missing: c0:: $260::')

Following advice in a similar Reddit post, I've also tried converting via KCC, but it doesn't seem to work either. What do I do? Thanks in advance for any help!

General Discussion / Feedback Kindle Version

I'm currently using version 2.4.0 of Kindle, but this version doesn't allow me to download books so I can later extract them using Calibre. What is the latest version that allows me to download books and that the program can use to remove the DRM?

Support / How-To Column sorting

When I click on a column header and sort it ascending/descending, why doesn't it also sort alphabetically in columns like Format? It works when I sort by Title or Author. But when I sort the Format column, it does not group all formats together alphabetically. Anyone have any idea?

Support / How-To Books Not Listed as 'on device'

Even though all of my books are imported from Calibre to my Kobo Libra Colour, only about half of them are listed as such. I have tried deleting the books (and their respected folders) from the e-reader and then resending from Calibre but the issue persists. The book is sent to the e-reader and has a green check mark indicating that it is on the device, but upon ejecting and reestablishing the connection the book is no longer listed as onboard (even though it is). What am I overlooking?

I am running koreader with a few plugins, but I haven't had the issue with this setup previously.

General Discussion / Feedback There's a new Calibre-compatible Android app with a very responsive dev (no affiliation)

I was searching for OPDS capable Android apps for audiobooks a couple of weeks back and happened upon a very new, very low user count app called Noctium. It has OPDS support and combines audiobook and ebook reading in one app, but it was bugged beyond usefulness for me two weeks ago with M4Bs not being downloadable at all until I added a mime type for it in Calibre and then them downloading as epubs and being corrupted. I reached out to the dev and was a bit shocked when I got a reply two hours later detailing how everything would be fixed in the next release, including manual format mapping that doesn't require the mime type (it picks it up from metadata and guesses download link instead of needing the OPDS to state it explicitly).

Since then I've emailed the dev multiple times and been more and more impressed at how responsive they are. Even minor shit like fixing the manifest so the app is selectable as a a favorite media app in Samsung's good lock sound extension is now in, as well as a suggestion for a setting to override bluetooth AVRCP skip commands. The ereader side is also quite decent with accessibility support that's still missing from far more veteran apps.

There's still issues. I sent a dozen issues/bugs after the update hit the store yesterday, but I imagine those will be handled in short order. The app has a bit of an obnoxious ad placement (with an ad free unlock) and the update introduced a prompt for data sharing consent that I'm not thrilled about, but given that it's now (according to my email) 2 years 8 months since I reported the manifest issue to the dev of Listen Audiobook Player and it's still not fixed, I'm willing to put some time and effort into helping a new app shine.

Just thought I'd share to have more eyes on the app as it's sitting at 10+ downloads in the Play Store and they don't seem to do anything to promote it beyond adding every single feature known to man and hoping searches will pick up stuff like mine picked up OPDS support.

Support / How-To FFF Error 403 - Including What I've Tried

I exclusively use FFF with ao3, and have done so for about a year. Today, when I went to update the fics I have saved, I kept getting the same error: HTTP Error in FFF '403 Client Error: Forbidden for url: https://archiveofourown.org/works/[fic#]/navigate?view_adult=true'(403). This isn't ideal, so I started troubleshooting. First, checked if ao3 was up. Then, checked that I wasn't timed out on my default browser which FFF operates through. Both seemed fine. Then, I checked my INI snippet. I hadn't changed anything, but I first messed with things I knew were prone to cause errors (see, use_archiveofourown.gay and slow_down_sleep_time). Toggling the first and raising the second didn't do anything. Next, I checked my username and password were correct. They were. Then I tried changing my default browser, and no difference. I also tried grabbing the links from the books and pasting them in as if I was adding new books, and still nothing. I also tried adding new books, same error. I tried removing my two blocked fics, and that didn't do anything.

One last note, if I enable opening the fic in browser, it still doesn't open in my browser. Thought I'd mention, but I don't usually open it in my browser.

Following is my personal.ini

[defaults] is_adult:true
connect_timeout:15.0
[epub]
make_firstimage_cover: false
convert_images_to: png
remove_transparency: false
[archiveofourown.org]
username:XXXXXXXX
password:XXXXXXXX
is_adult:true
use_workskin:true
slow_down_sleep_time:7
include_in_genre: ao3categories
## use_archiveofourown_gay:true
include_subject_tags:extratags, freeformtags, freefromtags

So does anyone else know how to fix this?

Support / How-To Jon Krakauer

There are a few books by Jon Krakauer that were in my Calibre library and on my computer. They have disappeared from both and can't be added to Calibre again after redownloading. Calibre says there are no ebook formats available. iBooks opens them with no problem. Am I doing something wrong?

Still trying to organize my collection. I have all of my fics in AO3 bookmarked, but only some subscribed. Will this be an issue for future updates?

Also, thank you all for being sooo helpful and patient! I really appreciate it!!!!

Support / How-To Glassboxx The Odyssey Screenplay ebook purchase

I purchased The Odyssey screenplay ebook through Faber and Glassboxx. On Glassboxx they say the publication date is today - July 21st - and so when click on the ebook to read it in the Glassboxx browser app it prohibits me from reading because the publication date is July 21st - again, this is today.

Why is prohibiting me from reading... on the day of release?

Someone please help me.

Support / How-To unable to update books with new chapters on kindle

hello,

i have tried searching but nothing seems to help.

i have several fan fic books i noticed have new chapters. i used the fanficfare plugin to update the files but when transferring these to my kindle they are not updated. the new chapters do not show. ive tried deleting on the kindle, deleting on the kindle via calibre, deleting the folder but that only seems to remove the file and not folder on the kindle. ive updated calibre to the latest version. can anyone help please?

i also have one that oddly seems to be permanently classified as a document, rather than a book like the others which is also driving me batty.

thank you
