Working as a CNC Machinist in the USA after immigrating from Italy?

I have some information to know:

2 months ago I just finished my 4 years high school diploma on cnc machinist with more than 600 hours of internship in two different companies (8 hours a day, 5 days a week)where I worked on 2 axis lathe and 3 axis milling machine with Fanuc, Siemens and Osai control.

After finishing the school I started working as a full time cnc machinist 6 days a week at a company where we make CNC machine. The company name is "GT Trevisan" known as their machine brand name. We create the parts of these machine.

At this company I work on a (3+1) 4 axis cnc milling machine. I setup and do programming on the machine. I'm capable of reading the design doing Fanuc macro programming with G/M codes. Also I'm capable of doing programming on the machine with Siemens language.

I have dream of working in the USA as a skilled machinist. One of the reason is I always studied/ worked with the metric system now I want to have work experience with the imperial/customary system.

  1. Is it really possible to come to the USA from Italy to work as a skilled CNC Machinist?

  2. Is it possible to live comfortably with the salary of a cnc machinist in USA? ( I'm not luxury loving person)

  3. Is it possible to afford houses in the USA as a cnc machinist?

  4. What is the minimum capabilities a person need to get selected?

  5. How's the demand of a cnc machinist in USA?

Has anyone recently bought a CNC machine from China? How was customs clearance?

I work in the CNC machine tool industry in China, and I've noticed a lot more discussion recently about stricter customs inspections for machine tool exports.

China's Customs recently issued Announcement No. 77 of 2026, which took effect on June 30. The announcement focuses on more standardized export declarations for lathes, milling machines, grinding machines and other related machine tools.

From my understanding, this does NOT mean that all CNC machines are now banned from export.

The key change is that exporters need to be much more careful about:

  • Machine specifications and technical parameters
  • Whether the machine falls under export-controlled items
  • Export control classification
  • End user and end use
  • Supporting documents and declaration accuracy

If customs has questions about the accuracy or authenticity of the declaration, the shipment may be held while they investigate.

From what I'm hearing from people in the industry, customs checks have definitely become more thorough recently. Some companies are experiencing longer clearance times, and I've also heard about more in-depth checks of machine tool manufacturers and exporters.

So I'm curious:

For those of you who recently bought a CNC lathe, machining center, Swiss-type lathe, or other machine from China — has your machine shipped yet?

Did you experience:

  • Longer customs clearance?
  • Requests for additional technical documents?
  • End-user information checks?
  • Unexpected delays?

I'm especially interested in hearing from buyers in the US, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

Has anyone here recently bought a machine from China? What was your experience?

Help! Fanuc series 31i model b

I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I have a CNC program that’s too large to fit into the machine’s memory, so I can’t load it into CNC MEM. I have the program on a USB drive, and I’m trying to move it to the machine’s DTSVR so I can run it from there, but I’m not sure of the correct process.
My questions are:
How do I transfer a program from a USB to DTSVR?

ATS bar feeder channel won't jog.

We have an ATS ML 580 barfeeder that has always worked fine, but today it refuses to Home or Jog the Channel in any direction. There nothing obstructing it, the pusher moves fine and will home and turns on its prox switch when it goes home. All the prox switches show they are in the right position, except for the channel and the splitter, which won't move. The Splitter does move some, but it can't get home unless the channel moves down.

These things aren't super complicated, but I can't figure what's keeping it hung up.

I was going to call ATS, but they now want a CC and 98.00 and hr for phone help with a 1hr min. Out of principle, I am trying to not have to call them, cause that's pretty shitty.

When Does Die Casting Start Making More Sense Than CNC Machining?

This question comes up a lot, but there isn’t one magic number where CNC machining suddenly stops making sense and die casting becomes the obvious choice.

For prototypes and small batches, CNC machining is usually easier. There’s no expensive mold to build, design changes are much simpler, and you can start production fairly quickly.

Die casting becomes more interesting when the order quantity is high enough to spread the tooling cost across a large number of parts. The cycle time per part can be much faster, especially for repeat orders.

But quantity isn’t the only thing that matters.

A simple aluminum housing might be worth die casting at a few thousand pieces. A complex part with tight tolerances, several machined surfaces, or frequent design changes may still be better suited to CNC machining at the same volume.

You also need to think about:

  • Tooling cost
  • Material choice
  • Part size and wall thickness
  • Required tolerances
  • Surface finish
  • Secondary machining
  • Expected repeat orders
  • Risk of future design changes

One detail that often gets missed is secondary machining. A die-cast part may still need drilling, tapping, facing, or CNC finishing. Once those extra steps are added, the cost difference may be smaller than expected.

So the real question isn’t just, “How many parts do I need?”

It’s closer to: “Will the savings per part cover the tooling cost before the design or demand changes?”

For anyone who has sourced or manufactured both, where did the switch start making sense for your project?

A couple of years ago I taught myself Python and computational materials science on the side, taking coursework from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Georgia Tech, and RUDN University (Nanophysics, with distinction).

Student built a CNC quoting tool that reads STEP files — where is my time/cost model wrong?

Hi all,
I'm a high-school student learning to code, and I built a tool that takes a STEP file and estimates machining time and cost. It extracts the geometry itself — bounding box, volume, holes (diameter/depth), pockets, chamfers, smallest internal radius, number of setups — then runs a rule-of-thumb time/cost model on top.
The geometry side is solid; it's reading the CAD math directly. The time and cost model is the weak part — it's based on textbook feeds/speeds and placeholder shop rates, and I've never checked it against real jobs. I'd rather have it corrected than keep guessing.
How it estimates time right now:
Roughing: (stock volume − part volume) ÷ a material removal rate (in³/min), with a derate for cornering in complex pockets

Drilling: per hole, depth ÷ penetration rate + a peck penalty

Finishing: a surface-area-based proxy

Setup: ~30 min per distinct clamping orientation, spread over the batch

Cost: machine time × shop rate + material (stock weight × $/lb)

Example: a 100×60×20 mm (≈4×2.4×0.8″) 6061 block with two through-holes, qty 1 → ~35 min and ~$46, of which 30 min is setup.
A few things I'd appreciate your read on (ballpark is fine, no proprietary numbers):
Does 35 min / $46 seem about right, or well off?

What's the biggest cost driver my model ignores? (I'm guessing tolerances and tool changes.)

Is ~30 min per setup a reasonable starting point?

Is a removal rate (in³/min) even the right way to think about roughing time?

The thing that would help most: if anyone's willing to share a STEP file or two along with the actual machining time — and the price if you're comfortable — I could check my estimates directly against reality. No customer info needed, and I understand completely if that's not something you can share.
I'm not trying to replace estimators or undercut anyone — just trying to understand how quoting really works and make the tool more accurate. Glad to share what I've built if it's useful.
