Historic YMCA Questions

I visited Butte last week. I thought it was absolutely fascinating—the history, architecture, and demographics are astounding.

While there, I passed the Historic YMCA. It’s an awesome building. My guess is it was probably one of the first YMCA buildings to be copper wired.

Here are my questions:

  1. From Zillow, I saw that it got sold. What are they planning on doing with it?

  2. Do any of you have any stories you can share?

Potential Move to Butte

TL:DR what are your thoughts/experiences living in Butte?

Hello all! I’m considering a move to Butte. I’m 28 and looking to give wildlife photography as my career a real shot. I’ve been a professional photographer and video producer my entire work life so this isn’t a wild change. I’d be using Butte as a base of operation. I have my Jeep setup for long trips so I wouldn’t spend too much time in town.

I’ve lived through Minnesota winters and live in Colorado now, so that’s not something I’m super concerned with. I’m hoping to hear from y’all about how you like or dislike living here, if there’s anything to avoid, etc. thanks!

What are the rules with off-road vehicles?

Been up to Butte twice now this year been thinking about moving down. One of the things that really encouraged me was the lack of law for off-road vehicles. On both trips, there were multiple occasions of people by us on dirt bikes or side-by-side‘s. I feel like it was a 50-50 split between on the country roads and in town. They all had no plates and in some dirt bikes case no headlights, tail lights, or anything really.
Some of these were right in front of police officers. Where I am from that would be a pretty hefty issue.
Is there a certain local law that’s different in Butte or is it a respect thing?
Personally, I’ve always been in the boat that you shouldn’t have to register something unless it’s got a big engine or you’re on the highway so I would be ecstatic to use my old bikes down there!
Thank you for your time!:)

Help identifying local artist

My mother in law purchased a couple of these sculptures (the other featuring a Madonna) and I believe they were made by an artist out of Butte, probably 20-30 years ago. Anyone recognize the artist? Thanks!

See these stickers? Take them down.

The Big Sky Active club is a Nazi / White Supremacy group that’s based in our beautiful state. This weekend during Folk Fest, they made sure to do some tagging. I’ve already taken down 2 and scribbled out another - but I’m sure there are more. Take them down or scribble them out…we don’t need Nazis promoting their ideology in our town.

These stickers are littered in dog whistles ( Celtic Cross shape, portion of the Black Sun flag in the two bottom parts of the cross, and the Nazi Eagle of course) to signal to fellow Nazis their intentions. To the unaware individual, they don’t see a problem. These groups recruit young men with the guise of being a group based in fitness and brotherhood - and then pull them with extremist ideology.

Be vigilant - and help keep the streets of Butte clean.

Italians in Butte?

I know part of my family left Italy and ended up in Butte. I believe they owned a candy store. Is anyone on this Reddit familiar with the experience of Italians in Butte?

My grandparents on my mother’s side grew up in Butte, Montana. If any of these are your last name, we may be related when I was a kid my grandparents and I used to drive from seattle to Butte, Anaconda, and White Hall.

Does anyone remember the name of the other priest at St. Patrick's in the 1980s? Not Kevin O'Neill

Short guy, full beard, was into computers.

Edit: Ken Fortney, he's apparently retired and in Ohio now.

The Shaft web archives

The Shaft is a print-first arts and entertainment publication for Butte, but we're building up the digital archives for the artists, writers, and columnists we feature. The stories we print are loaded into the digital archives a few months after they run in the paper, so if you're interested in what's happening in the Butte DIY and arts/entertainment scene, but not in a hurry or in Butte, check out gettheshaft.org. We're featuring Butte artist Kelly Packer in July, but seeking suggestions for August and September.
