New CD/Vinyl/etc. thrift shop opened near me recently and had these three sitting out for $5 total. Pretty happy, especially to get the Live in NY.

Finally arrived today! Can’t wait to listen to this.

I found a 10-minute Expressen pro-shot highlight compilation from Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band at Ullevi, Gothenburg on 27 July 2012.

Songs included (all partial):

• The Promised Land - 1st song
• Prove It All Night - 2nd song
• My Love Will Not Let You Down - 5th song
• We Take Care of Our Own - 6th song

The file is 768×432 with the original EXPRESSEN watermark, no intro/outro, and no voice-over.

What makes it interesting is the source: it came from a 2017 Expressen archival dump containing concert material from 2008, 2012, and 2016. The 2008 were extremely low quality , but this 2012 file was significantly higher quality.

I’ve searched YouTube, Google, and Greasy Lake and can’t find any mention of this specific 10-minute compilation. I’ve seen people discuss the official “Drive All Night” pro-shot from this show, but not this Expressen highlight reel.

Has anyone here seen this source before, or does it appear to be uncirculated?

OP Prediction for Day 29: We Take Care of Our Own

This is my hot take. I really really loathe Lucky Town. Tunnel of Love is already kind of a renunciation of his youthful rebellion, but it’s like really well done and well articulated. Lucky Town literally just repeats the exact same themes but in a trashier more low effort way. That cover actually kills me bro. I don’t feel like there’s a single song in this album I really loved. On the other hand, I really don’t understand the hate for Human Touch. Granted, it’s nowhere near his peak albums, but like it feels very solid to me.

Human Touch itself while a little derivative of Dancing in the Dark is very solid I think, Soul Driver is very ethereal and fun, 57 Channels has this eerie alienated feeling I really like (almost an older Nebraska type song), Cross My Heart is just really good, Gloria’s Eyes almost reminds of like D.H. Lawrence, With Every Wish is super poignant and well written, Roll of the Dice is decent, Real World is nice, admittedly All Or Nothing At All kinda sucks, Man’s Job feels chauvinistic at first but I think it’s actually a really good commentary on masculinity, I Wish I Were Blind is a little repetitive, Long Goodbye is fun, Real Man sucks, and Pony Boy is a poor closer. Whereas like in Lucky Town I basically find them all mid or actively annoying, like idk what the title track is even supposed to be about it, the Better Days song is much worse than the Asbury Jukes Better Days, Local Hero is good but eh, admittedly If I Should Fall Behind and Book of Dreams are great, and Leap of Faith is fine, but the rest are so mid.

Idk I guess I just don’t understand the current consensus that Lucky Town is the superior album. Lucky Town feels spiritually empty, Human Touch at least has some passion and creativity in it I think.

I bought the American Beauty EP when it came out, listened to it, and thought it was just okay but nothing special. Then a few months ago, I decided to give it another shot since it had been so long. I felt the same about the first 3 songs - they really just sounded like leftovers from the Working on a Dream sessions.

But then I got to Hey Blue Eyes and was absolutely blown away. Hearing it in this day and age, with those lyrics which are more relevant now than they were when they were written, is stunning. I wish it had been included on a proper album but I get that musically, it didn’t really fit with the Magic album. It would’ve been a jaw-dropping gem to have played on this last tour.

It just amazes me that such a ridiculously good song ended up stuck on a little-known EP. There are several excellent deep cuts that didn’t make it onto studio albums, but I can’t think of any that are better than this one. What’s everyone else’s thoughts on where this song ranks among Bruce’s hidden gems?

Not sure why Bruce had it nuked but every single version is gone.

E Street is probably my favorite Bruce album, but Wild Billy's Circus Story was always the weird song that I wasn't quite sure about. But something happened over the weekend, and I can't stop listening to it, and the more I listen the more I adore it. It might have jumped to my 3rd spot of the whole record (behind Incident and NYC).

The way he says some of these lines is so mesmerizing:
"Running home to some small Ohio town"
"And now the elephants dance real funky"
""Hey, son, you want to try the big top?"
"Ninety-five, ninety-six, ninety-seven"
"The sword-swallowers blade"

And that's without mentioning the quality of the lyrics! Every line is poetic, I love "And the fire eater's lying in a pool of sweat, victim of the heatwave" and "A ragged suitcase in his hand, he steals silently away from the circus grounds; And the highway's haunted by the carnival sounds"

AND the instrumentation! The tuba??? Holy fuck

Am I talking crazy here, or is this song legitimately underrated?

P.S. I would love to be pointed in the direction of artists/albums that sound like this. I guess Tom Waits if he says this is his favorite Bruce song lol

OP Prediction for Day 28: Another Thin Line

About a year ago, I was listening to as many versions of "Kitty's Back" as I could.

While listening to the Hammersmith Odeon, London '75 video, I found myself thinking "you know, through the solos, you could be forgiven for thinking you were listening to Weather Report." Just props to the musicality of the band, and Danny and Roy's skill on the keys.

Not long after, while listening to the Rock Hall Induction version of Kitty's Back I come across a commenter saying that s/he went to a show in Allentown, PA a few weeks after The Wild, The Innocent... release and that "Bruce opened to phenomenal musicians Weather Report."

Now, I suppose that could mean that Bruce and the band played some Weather Report songs at the top of the show, but my first thought was that it meant they actually opened for Weather Report or went first in a double billing. Which would be cool, and wild.

I've tried a few times looking this up, but most of what comes up is literal reports of the weather around more recent Bruce shows. I have gone through the annual gig pages of http://brucebase.wikidot.com/ and https://www.weatherreportdiscography.org/ and found no overlap but as those are community wikis, they may be incomplete.

Some close connections may be that Weather Report is listed as having played the Widener College MacMorland Center in Chester on December 2, 1973, while Bruce played the same venue on April 5, 1974.

More likely if the commenter was mis-remembering, is May 6, 1974 where per BruceBase, the band opened for another jazz fusion mainstay, Chick Corea's Return to Forever, in Newtown, PA. This is at least as cool as Weather Report I figure. I played more Chick Corea in high school jazz band than Weather Report after all. It just doesn't serendipitously match my prior thought about Weather Report exactly.

Neither of these are all that close to Allentown. Seems the closest show to there were two at the Roxy in Northampton on April 29.

All that said, is there any other memory anyone has of Bruce and the E Street Band opening for Weather Report sometime in late '73 or early '74? Or perhaps just that they once jammed out some jazz fusion in Allentown? TIA!

So specifically during the time when he was composing “The River”, Springsteen began to write women as being universally ideological in nature specifically when it came to their perception of love. This undercurrent runs through much of his work at the time with “I Wanna Marry You”, “Dollhouse”, “Be True” and even stray lines in songs like “Meet Me In The City” and “Two Hearts.” One interpretation of these songs could be that Springsteen was attempting to understand love and relationships within the context of realism in a way that starkly contrasted his work from earlier in the decade. However it does beg two questions. What type of women was Bruce trying to pursue at the time and is it possible that he was pursuing and thus subconsciously writing about women who didn’t want to be pursued? His progression in how he’d write women by the end of the nineteen eighties seems far more balanced than what could be looked upon as a “savior’s complex” on “The River” for although he admits in “I Wanna Marry You” that he can merely help the protagonist’s dreams along, what he fails to take into consideration is that not only may she have dreams of her own, but dreams that don’t involve him.

Thoughts?
