When memories you want to forget, but your body remembers.

I read this novel at thirteen, and have reread it time and time again since. The haunting themes of our unnamed heroin, the hot and cold passion of her whirlwind romance and marriage to the previously widowed Maxim DeWinter, living in the ghost of a woman she felt she may never compare to... it was the most palpable expression of desire and ache and longing that has mirrored my own in life, a hunger to be small and cherished and desired that is forever gnawing. A bittersweet ending that is as happy as most may ever get.

Truly one of my favorites.

So I have a quote stuck in my brain that I can't for the life of me find. I believe it is from Manzoni's The Betrothed, but I can't find it there or elsewhere.

It goes something along the lines of, "There is no dread so terrible as that of being afraid to breathe God's clean air or to touch your neighbor's hand."

I remember being captivated by the quote when reading it, but Google is giving me nothing. If any fellow classics lovers knows where to find it, I will be so grateful!
