If youāve never studied abroad in a predominantly white country, it may be hard to understand how important it is for you to complete your studies, so you may not react the way you normally would. I absolutely relate to her experience and in my own experience getting my masters abroad, felt the burden of acting and responding a certain way to not jeopardize your standing in a country that is not your own. Iām glad sheās sharing this and giving people a heads up, itās great information to have.

Ex (also black) from a long time ago went to Pepperdine (who has a similar exchange program in BA) had this exact experience. One night out a guy put something in her drink, luckily she noticed and pretended to remain interested so she could get his phone number and name (sheās now a civil rights attorney, amazing woman).
She immediately reported him to the police, only to learn that this is a normal dating practice here, stop overreacting. But thatās not the good part of the story. Because sheās black and had an American accent they had no idea that she spoke fluent Spanish and in fact had been studying Argentine slang for some timeā¦ another cop in the background made a vague comment in Argentine Spanish / Castellanoā¦ something to the effect of plus sheās so dark nobody would care, jajaja.
Fuck that place.

Again, I present to you Argentina...
17th and 18th centuries Buenos Aires served as a major hub for the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
In the 19th century Argentina deployed the "Whitening Strategy" which promoted more Anglo Europeans/Hispanics to settle Argentina to change its demographics.
Then they drafted more of the Black Argentinians for head of the line privelages during the war to act as their bullet sponges during both the War of Independance and Triple Alliance. Which served multiple purposes for them. It helped them fight their Wars while eradicating the black population in Argentina.
Not to mention the disease outbreaks they did little to nothing help quell for those specific demographics. Then when all else failed... Assimilation by integration. Yup, "resistance is futile" for the women, when you rid your country of most of the black male presence and an increased Anglo Europeans/Hispanic population that led to a lot of interracial marriages and kids.
Yup, good ol' Argentina... No wonder they had very few brown players on the team.

Yes Spain is trash when it comes to race, but the way Argentina was acting up and harassing black Americans on American soil is absolutely deranged.
I donāt think a lot of people realize how extreme their behavior looks even compared to MAGA assholes. Weāre living though a historic right wing resurgence and they still managed to stand out for their racism. Theyāre giving Israel a run for their money.

As a Latin American, I'm quite aware there deep rooted racism in all of Latin American, some worse than others. But it's seeded from the days of the colonial times where the white, wealthy ruling power basically dictate what is written in history or not. And for that reason, racism against blacks goes back generations. But Argentina is a special case, their culture and society is based purely on racism, and proudly wear the badge as having successfully wiping out the Black race from their country. As a matter of fact, every country has probably 1 or 2 derogatory words for Black people, but Argentines has at least 10 of them. And not just for black people, also indigenous people. So in a country where they also call ingenious people "Black," you know they're racist AF.

I'm in the USA and it's bad here, but once I read about Argentinians I was glad they lost the World Cup. No country or person should ever have to put up with this, EVER!!!

I visited Argentina about five years ago on a similar program for grad school. It wasnāt an exchange program. We were down there for about a week. I can honestly say that I did not experience any overt racism or bigotry or uncomfortable fascination. I will concede that that could be too because Iām a guy Iām about 61 and at the time I was about 275 pounds. I did catch on to some people just kinda looking and what not But no one ever approached me or said anything or have any confrontations with me. I have to admit I had a great time down there, but seeing some of the things Iāve seen during the World Cup and people posting about the history of Argentina and then going and doing some research myself, I feel so conflicted because I canāt excuse their past and possibly their current state as far as race relations go, particularly towards Black people, even though at the time I felt like I had an amazing time down there

Look at the data. During World War 2 the president was a self proclaimed Nazi, he created routes to free those individuals who were being prosecuted for war crimes. The people that participated in segregation, as well as the bondage of Black people are very much still alive today. They vote in your local elections. Theyāll probably be your children superintendent they are nurses at the hospital. They never went away. They just changed the packaging.

And how do you think the people around her would react to that? Suppose the cops are called...you think they're going to defer to what's right, or do you think they'll make an assessment solely based on what they see? She is NOT talking about the US, she's talkign about a country where racism is explicitly written into their constitution (article 25, to be precise). Your implication is not the least bit strategic and would be extremely dangerous for her.
