Help and Advice A Note About Our Content

Black life is bigger than racism, and this community reflects that.

Effective immediately, we will be far more selective about racist incident posts. Random "Karen" videos, isolated racist encounters, rage bait, and shock-value content are no longer the type of content this community exists to amplify and may be removed at moderator discretion.

Posts about racism should be timely, broadly significant, or capable of generating meaningful discussion beyond simply reacting to someone's hateful behavior.

This community exists to elevate Black voices, not to serve as a highlight reel for every racist person with a smartphone.

Also.

We ban all trolls no matter who you are.

We have a zero tolerance policy against trolls.

Calling yourself an ally doesn’t give you a free pass to derail discussions, speak over Black voices, or argue against Black lived experiences.

If your idea of “contributing” is playing devil’s advocate, concern trolling, demanding that Black people justify their lived experiences, or constantly talking over Black voices, this is not the community for you.

Thank you. We’re so much more than what the world wants us to think.

I literally just ignore racist, they want to be apart of our lives so bad it’s just fucking weird, I truly believe their jealousy breeds internal hatred

I had a European-American stalk me on the freeway yelling some shit at me (like I can hear him through my truck windows 🤦🏽‍♂️) so I left a report and video of the incident so there’s a paper trail of his weird ass shenanigans

Report, block, ignore works irl too

For example I just removed a post and sent this to the Op.

Find a reputable news source and post that not just random screenshots. Be very thoughtful and not just go for shock value but think about what our community is supposed to take from the post besides just being angry and upset.

Thank you for your diligence in moderating

It takes all of us. Keep reporting those trolls. I’d use stronger more direct language but I’m keeping it family friendly. Trust that reporting works. We don’t play but we need help due to the volume.

Against my better judgement, I went and reported like ~20 nasty comments on a post the other day (some straight up cartoonishly evil racism, other "you're all being divisive! This isn't how you convince us to be allies!" types of nonsense), and when I checked back the next day, most of them had actually been removed.

Honestly, I'm used to BPT-style moderation where only outright slurs or w/e are removed, while devils' advocacy and obnoxious invalidation is permitted. I actually really appreciate the work ya'll put in, because that's usually what really wears me down and pushes me out of a space. It makes reports feel less like shouting into the void from the user side of things, and it's just a breath of fresh air to have a mod team that really does give a damn.

38

u/ateam1984 🖤 4d ago

Thank you for doing this. Thank you for taking the time. It really does make a difference.

7

u/CharmCityKid09 4d ago

BPT doesn't really have moderation. Unless its a violation of Big Reddit's rules they damn near allow anything to fly and they for sure never moderate posts until after they've "secured" enough engagement.

14

u/SkirtNo3276 4d ago

The mods here out there doing the Lord’s work

49

u/djspacebunny 4d ago

Fighting each other over the rageybait du jour accomplishes nothing. Having real, meaningful, constructive conversations is where the magic happens! As a fellow moderator, I completely agree with your take. Yeah, rage stuff bumps up engagement but at what cost? You want a healthy community where people feel free to express their opinions in a civil adult-like manner. That's a sustainable community right there!

17

u/FooLi0CooLi0 4d ago

Exactly this. Some ppl fall for it and be waving their pitchforks at their own. Ive just been engaging less since I dont want to make time for that type of energy. Im all for moderating content for a better vibe.

Mods, is there a way to isolate trolls from India and Russia? The paid ones?

17

u/ateam1984 🖤 4d ago

Report all trolls

1

u/yaggfufront 4d ago

Next they’ll simply reverse target our comments “all” as all racist. It’s the only play left.

u/ArtichokeShoddy5811 4d ago edited 4d ago

On a completely different and constructive note, please consider buying used copies of books which celebrate black history, culture, life, soldiers, heroes, literature, and titles which are on banned lists. I believe our collective stories about what it means to be a human in the US are being erased and/or altered. I have collected books documenting and celebrating subjects like civil rights, women's movements and contributions, environmental issues, marginalized populations -- all of that and more, and some geared toward children. Preserve it or lose it.

-a humble ally

Yes, buy new absolutely. I'm cheap.

16

u/ateam1984 🖤 4d ago

Buy NEW books. This is how you support Black authors. And only buy used books if they are out of print and from Black booksellers.

1

u/Grouchy-Albatross352 4d ago

This is the way.

The racist stuff going to the top of the sub is a problem for me, so I’m grateful.

Earlier today I watched a video where a Black person was called the n word without any kind of trigger warning and I closed the app and went to TikTok where I curated my algorithm in a way that never happens.

I want to abandon and mute this sub completely at times and routinely abandon it for days.

Sucks to also be a leftist and student of the Black Radical Imagination here because people will straight up call you MAGA (just seen it happen to someone).

It’s demoralizing. Unfortunately, we have progressed to the point typing on our phones are considered a community and I don’t want to see that.

Idk.

6

u/ateam1984 🖤 4d ago

Thanks for your insights.

1

u/yourlocaltouya 3d ago

Would it make sense to require such posts to both use the spoiler/blur option AND provide a clear warning about its disturbing and/or triggering contents within the post itself? Or should we just automatically report it to you under the "No violent or graphic content" rule?

5

u/RedRider1138 4d ago

That’s such a good point—I just realized I haven’t seen much from one of my favorite subs recently and I’ve been indulging in a lot of AITA reading. Time to be the change I want to see in the world 😄

Yes this! We are aware of the injustices and cruelty we face. I need a place where I am not going to be triggered. This past week has taken a toll. I have a son who is young and I am raising him here in the US. I am stressed and scared and all the things it is nice to see something that doesn't make me feel angry.

Thank you!!!!! I was thinking that some folks don’t know how to relate to other black folks without “struggle” being involved. I don’t want to gloss over or hide those experiences but there is more to our lived experience than just struggle.

Zero Tolerance for Trolling - This space centers Black people, Black culture, and Black lived experiences. Our identity is not debate material. Any form of trolling, baiting, snide "questions," culture-poking, dogwhistles, whataboutism, derailments, or attempts to disguise hostility as curiosity will be removed. Users who test the line, play word games, or look for loopholes will be removed as well. We are not here to be provoked or picked apart. Do not play devil’s advocate here. Be respectful, be real, or be gone.

2

u/Devanyani 4d ago

Love it!! This world is so full of things to bring us down and I love it when subreddits aim towards being uplifting rather than magnifying the hate.

2

u/LearnAlways717 4d ago

This sub shows up in my feed a lot, and I often feel moved by what I see. I am not a poc, and wanted to know if it’s okay/welcomed to support content and like posts here? Just want to be respectful of the community. It’s important for me to understand and support in helpful and respectful ways. Thanks:)

2

u/wsele 3d ago

I really appreciate this. I’ve been finding myself dreading the sub because there’re only so many reminders of senseless hatred directed at us I can take. Thank you.

Great news

1

u/Intelligent_Hair3109 4d ago

Great point and much respected. Still kind of keeping my head down as it's necessary for family. My experience with the human duck blind has convinced me that the only thing that may stop the nonsense is to abandon it in favor of doing that which uplifts Beloved Community in real life. To get real, I've always found paying to converse against my Indigenous soul mm Ten thousand years of natural I prefer.

Only thing which I'll miss online are the beautiful humans reading this. Bless everyone

Those posts and the fact that they were pushed to the top by the algorithms, left little room for diverse input , we are a diverse group of multifaceted individuals. I look forward to artists, creatives, thinkers , achievers , educators being featured more prominently. Thank you Mods.

If you're new here, please read our rules.

Please report all trolling, bad faith, and bigoted comments (dogwhistles, sneaky wordplay, and devil's advocate comments included).

Falsely/maliciously reporting this thread will result in having your Reddit account banned from the platform. Abuse of the report button is a breach of Reddit's TOS.

Don't message us to ask why your comment was removed or why you were banned. Don't message us to whine about it either. Again, read the rules.

Lastly, keep it respectful.
