Bill has talked about this and if it were true guys like McAfee and Stephen A wouldn’t be a thing. The exact opposite is true, sadly

Things that soccer gets right

Americans love to complain about the stupid rules in soccer- offsides, red cards vs yellow, overtime rules, etc.

But in watching the World Cup, there is 1 thing soccer very clearly gets right- scaled punishments for fouls.

A foul in the middle of the field (where the scoring threat is minimal)? That’s not a big deal, free kick from that spot. A foul in the box (when a team might be about to score)? Penalty kick.

Compare that to the nfl- a defensive holding penalty on 1st down has the same punishment as a defensive holding penalty on 4th and 30, which often feels like it bails out the offense.

In hockey, a tripping penalty in the defensive zone is the same punishment as in the offensive zone, when 1 of those two are far more likely to be in an attempt to prevent goals.

The scaled punishments definitely are easier to swallow, because you are punished to an equal amount of how much it would actually change the game

Did anyone else in here start following Bill/Ringer content because they started to age out of the Barstool demographic?

Upvotes

I used to be a huge Barstool fan back in the day, listened to a lot of their content, thought it was hysterical from ages 18-26, but once I started to find Dave and most of the others at the company kind of repulsive, I came across the ringer. Ironically I have Ryen to thank for that, his appearances on PMT are what got be listening to him, and then Bill, and now next thing you know I'm going to live Ringer shows. And looking back, I can't believe I ever found barstool stuff to be that entertaining. Portnoy is a massive creep these days, PMT has gotten pretty stale and they just recycle the same shit they've been doing for years, and some of their content guys even make Van look normal.

One is apparently massively popular but I don’t know a single person who is invested or cares about the show. The other is more niche but far more quotable and impactful.

Simmons Take That Aged Well: Overrating Entertainment Value of Pro Athletes

There was a thread here a few days ago about takes Bill had that aged well. Seeing the purge at ESPN combined with the recent onslaught of all things Kelce Brothers, McAfee, Brady had me thinking of a comment he made years ago regarding Pro athletes. The vast majority of them are dull and uninteresting for the most part that whenever one comes along that has a hint of a personality, the media treats them like they are the next Eddie Murphy. Basically it become "the tallest dwarf" corollary (Charles Barkley being the biggest exception).

Which athletes or celebrities who you previously liked (or tolerated) became unbearable because they chose to become overexposed?

Tom Brady and Timothee Chalamet come to mind.

Even before recent cringe incidents I became sick of Brady. I have never clicked a single Tom Brady video in my entire life except one Veritasium video where he was featured, but I can't help but see him *all the time* on my YouTube recommendations. I have no idea why YouTube does this.

I can't help but see Timothée Chalamet latching on to all of sports-related stuff and saying dumb shit to increase his profile.

Am I missing something or was that a terrible suggestion by CR? I get that Damon goes John Wick-mode near the end but I'm just not seeing it.

If it wasn't Damon, I'd take Leo, Bale, maybe Hardy, maybe even a Clive Owen-aissance
