For more than eight years, one of the biggest music groups in the world existed completely outside my awareness.
I had never listened to K-pop.
It wasnât that I disliked it. I simply had no exposure to it. None of my friends listened to it. I rarely listened to radio. It was an entire genre of music that somehow never intersected with my life.
There had been a few accidental encounters.
I had watched the anime Tower of God and discovered I liked a few of its theme songs. That led me to briefly discover groups like Stray Kids and NiziU. I liked some of what I heard â enough to notice, but not enough to explore further.
Then, in October 2024, everything changed completely.
I had checked into the hospital on October 17th for what was supposed to be a relatively minor lung surgery and an overnight stay.
Things did not go according to plan.
I eventually woke up eight days later in the ICU, having lost more than a week after a complication had left me sedated and intubated.
After leaving intensive care, I remained hospitalized for another week recovering, and trying to process everything that had happened while facing the long road ahead. During those quiet days in late October, stuck in a hospital bed with far too much time to think, I found myself endlessly scrolling YouTube in search of distraction.
And that was when I first heard APT.
It was everywhere.
I knew exactly who Bruno Mars was.
I had absolutely no idea who the blonde Korean woman singing beside him was.
Something about her voice immediately stood out.
So I looked her up.
Her name was Rosé.
And I learned she was part of a group called BLACKPINK.
Curious, I started digging deeper.
The first songs I found were How You Like That and Whistle.
I liked both immediately.
At first, though, BLACKPINK itself didnât fully click with me.
RosĂ© caught my attention, but I wasnât immediately sold on the group. In fact, if Iâm being honest, my first impression of the other members wasnât particularly positive. Something about their image initially felt distant and intimidating.
Still, I kept listening.
Then something strange started happening.
Songs I had dismissed initially began changing in my mind.
Lovesick Girls, which I thought was silly the first time I heard it, started growing on me.
DDU-DU DDU-DU slowly became addictive.
As If Itâs Your Last, a song I had barely noticed at first, gradually became my absolute favorite.
Without realizing it, I had started falling down the rabbit hole.
Meanwhile, recovery continued.
I was eventually discharged from the hospital carrying far more than I expected.
I went home on supplemental oxygen.
I was sent home with a chest tube that would remain with me until early January 2025.
Life had changed dramatically.
Yet through all of that, BLACKPINK had quietly become part of my daily routine.
Months passed.
Then, on April 8th, 2025, I learned BLACKPINK was coming to Toronto in July.
By this point, I already knew enough of their music that I made a decision almost immediately.
I was going.
I bought a premium ticket for the July 23rd show.
Row 1.
West side of the stage.
Close enough to guarantee an incredible view.
At that point, I probably knew eight songs I genuinely liked.
Most people would have stopped there.
I did not.
Over the following weeks, I listened more.
Watched interviews.
Watched live performances.
Learned more about the group itself.
Gradually, my opinion of the other members changed completely.
Jisoo turned out to be hilarious and incredibly charming.
Lisaâs talent as a dancer was impossible to ignore.
Jennieâs stage presence and vocal strength became much more obvious the more I watched.
And Rosé, who had started this entire journey by accident months earlier, remained the center of it all.
Then my brain began doing what it always does.
The concert was outdoors at Rogers Stadium.
What if the weather was bad on July 23rd?
What if the July 22nd show had better weather?
Would both performances be identical?
Would sitting on the opposite side of the stage offer a completely different perspective?
Would Rosé spend more time interacting with the east side versus the west side?
I had never attended the same concert twice before.
But after weeks of overthinking it, I made another decision.
On May 30th, I bought a second ticket.
This time for July 22nd.
Same section.
East side of the stage.
Row 3.
Apparently I had stopped behaving rationally.
At this point, I had gone from casual listener to full immersion.
Between May and July, I kept listening obsessively.
By the time concert week arrived, I had more than a dozen BLACKPINK songs I genuinely loved and could sing along with.
And I was doing all of this alone.
None of my friends followed BLACKPINK.
None of my family knew anything about K-pop.
So I went by myself.
Then the universe rewarded every decision I had made.
The weather for both nights was absolutely perfect.
No rain.
No unbearable heat.
Perfect summer evenings.
The July 22nd show came first.
And somehow, fate made the cheaper ticket better.
I had purchased Row 3 seats.
But when I sat down, I realized the three seats directly in front of me in Row 2 were completely empty.
Nobody blocked my view.
No heads in the way.
I had a perfect, unobstructed sightline to the stage.
It was incredible.
Then came July 23rd.
My original premium ticket.
Front row.
West side.
A completely different perspective.
And somehow the second night felt every bit as magical as the first.
Over those two nights, I realized something.
This had become far more than simply discovering a new band.
Just months earlier, I had been lying in a hospital bed recovering from a surgery that had gone catastrophically off-script.
I had unexpectedly lost over a week of my life in intensive care.
I had gone home on oxygen.
I had spent months recovering while adjusting to a completely different reality.
And somewhere during that difficult period, through pure accident and curiosity, I discovered something that brought an enormous amount of joy back into my life.
By the end of those two concerts, I had become the sort of person I never imagined I would become.
I bought over four hundred dollars worth of merchandise.
A lightstick.
Two shirts.
A hat.
A pin.
A trading card that now sits proudly displayed beside some of my favorite Pokémon cards.
The strangest part is how impossible this entire story would have sounded one year earlier.
Eight months earlier, I didnât know who RosĂ© was. I had never intentionally listened to K-pop.
Somehow, a hospital stay, a YouTube algorithm, a Bruno Mars collaboration, and one moment of curiosity sent me down a path that ended with me standing among fifty thousand fans in Toronto on two perfect summer nights, singing along to songs in a language I donât speak.
And if BLACKPINK had announced two more Toronto shows that week?
I would have been at them too.

I saw they were selling leftover merch from last yearâs rosie (BP) pop up store online. I thought it was astralive but the domain says liveplanet and astralive socials not deactivated? I know their staff werenât paidâŠ.idk seems super shady since they have liquidation notice now.

Made this for the England vs New Zealand friendly match I went to today. Thought since it was New Zealand and Puma that it just had to be customized for her. I think it turned out pretty good. Anything for my number one girl!

Solid Blink here, but seeing my ultimate bias walk right in front of me during the hi-bye session made this the best concert/fan tour experience ever!
