Things I wish I did from the beginning. Intermediate surfer 8 years in.

I have been surfing 8 years and would say I'm around the low end of intermediate.

There is ultimately a combination of things you can do to improve your progression.

Things I wish I did from the start now I have the time to reflect :

Find the right board for my level and stick with it till I can't get anymore out of it. I went down size and volume far too quickly, I should have stayed with a Mal way longer than I did. I was too eager to surf a shorty. Don't be like me. Get something that has a load of float and you can consistently catch waves on. You will have way more fun and spend less time sat watching others score wave after wave.

Yoga. So important for keeping you flexible and your core strong. When I started doing yoga on a regular basis my pop up improved , as well did my paddle and recovery. And my zen ommmmm

Calisthenic training, or hiit, or pool swimming lengths. Or all three. You want to be able to duck dive waves one after the other, see a set wave turn, paddle and pop up and catch it multiple times a session? Then you need to focus on your shoulders and core strength as well as recovery.

Breathing, practice some breathing exercises, this will help when you go out on big days and your tooshy starts to squeak. Also controlled breathing when paddling out back will help you keep your energy levels topped up.

Surfskate, when there is no swell, practice your stance, and flow on dry land. Time on your feet in the water can be limited, where as you can spend hours on land working on dialing in that muscle memory.

Use a balance board, this is an awesome indoor workout that you can use for stability, and also part of your exercise routine. You can adopt your surf stance and learn how to transfer your weight front to back foot.

Remember you are not in competition with anyone, this is your journey, there are no bad sessions, even if you don't catch a wave, use that opportunity to learn positioning, duck dives, paddle techniques. Same applies to your board, don't worry what others are surfing, find the board that will maximise your wave count every session, not hinder you.

Speak to locals and make friends, watch them surf and learn from them.

Ultimately get in the water as much as it's safe and within your range to do so. No shame in sitting one out, take that time to take pictures or vids, most surfers would appreciate a little snap of them on a wave. You can learn a lot from the beach rather than spending 20 minutes not beating the breakers and then paddling back in.

I am a forever beginner surfer bc I can only travel/surf in the summer. I started a long time ago (2012), surfed for about 4-5 years and then quit entirely until about 3 years ago. The good news is I do make incremental progress every summer once I'm in the water for 3 weeks straight. This is where I am now, trying to get a hang of turning, but ending up too far at the bottom to make it back up the wave again. I just want to say that this trip might have been the first one where I didnt put so much pressure on myself to improve and I made the same amount of progress as I have in the past (when I was worrying myself with high expectations and stressing about my time running out, etc.) I am 41 years old and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon so let this be a message that it's okay to be on your own timeline. Any progress is good, enjoy yourselves out there :)

Back to surfing

Hello. I just moved to Jupiter Florida. I used to surf there when I was kid. I borrowed a board and tried to surf again and can’t at all. Is there a place that teaches in Jupiter at a reasonable rate? The place I borrowed the board from signed me up for a class that turned out to be for little kids. I found out it was bc an email told the moms to not forget to pack lunches.

Billabong Revolution 4/3 (€160) vs HyperFreak (€280) vs waiting for a Flashbomb?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from people who have used these wetsuits.

I can get a Billabong Revolution Natural 4/3 (women's) through my surf school for €160, which seems like an amazing deal.

I can also get an O'Neill HyperFreak (women's) 4/3 for around €280.

The other option is to wait for sales and try to buy a Rip Curl Flashbomb 4/3.

The thing is... I'm always cold in the water, especially during winter sessions in Portugal, so warmth is my top priority. I still want a suit that's comfortable and flexible, but staying warm matters most.

If you were in my position, what would you choose?

- Billabong Revolution Natural 4/3 for €160

- O'Neill HyperFreak 4/3 for €280

- Wait for a Rip Curl Flashbomb on sale

Is the Flashbomb really worth waiting (and paying more) for, or is the Revolution at €160 too good a deal to pass up?

I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks!

Anyone offering private surf lessons in San Diego? 🏄🏽‍♀️

Hey there Im 35 🏳️‍🌈 looking for anyone that’s offering private surf lessons. I have a board and wetsuit. Would love to have someone spend some 1:1 time with me so that I can make the best of my summer.

I surfed as a kid but that was obviously a long time ago the skills shockingly didn’t stick haha.

I am open to traveling where you feel is best for lessons! Weekdays might be tough for North County as I live in South San Diego.

My availability

Monday - Friday after 2:30pm

Weekends Early Dawn Patrol

I know that there’s surf schools I can book online but I’d rather try here first and give someone the pay directly!

Appreciate any insight on this request. Looking forward to connecting! Thank you

What size waves should I ride?

Upvotes

A spot somewhat local to me has forecasted 4-5 footers tomorrow. Ive only been out 3 times but can ride a line on my 7 ft foamie and sorta just ride straight on my 5'10 fish. I haven't had the chance to ride waves this size yet. Is there anything I should look out for and would it be safe for me to do so?

Where to stay for longboarding in Northern Baja in August?

I'm thinking of flying out to LA and travelling down to Baja for a couple weeks. Ideally I want somewhere cheap to stay with good tacos and easily accessible longboard friendly waves. A chill authentic mexican town ideally but seems it's more bigger towns/ cities, expensive accomodation or camping? I'm an upper beginner/ low intermediate surfer and love right point breaks or reefs. Can anybody recommend anywhere?

PU or Epoxy? Recommendations for repair kits?

I got this board second hand I have tried googling to confirm if it’s PU or Epoxy but can’t seem to find this specific board range online . It’s light weight and a cheaper brand board.

I am leaning towards Epoxy?

Kit repair brand recommendations would be great!

First ever attempt so any worthwhile YouTube videos on ding repairs would be very much welcomed.

First surfboard question

Hey all! I just moved down to Surfside beach and wanted to get into surfing, and my dad happened to leave me this board, what do you guys know about it? Is it perfectly awful for a beginner learning to surf? I have skated for about six years and have almost the same amount of experience snowboarding, not sure if that helps at all. Thank you in advance!

Also if anyone knows the best places to surf near Myrtle beach/surfside, a noob would appreciate it!

Anyone else get migraine with aura from surfing? What triggers yours?

I’ve had several migraine with aura episodes that seem to be related to surfing. Specifically, right after I exit the water.

The visual aura comes first, then the headache afterward.

For those of you who get migraines while surfing: What seems to trigger yours?

Also, have you found anything that’s significantly reduced or prevented them?

Curious to hear what other surfers have experienced.

Which torso attire should I get?

Hey dudes,

So the other day I was surfing 73 degree water and similar air temp at sunset wearing only board shorts. I started to get cold after about half an hour.

My first question is will a rashguard provide me with just enough extra warmth to keep me cozy in these conditions (blocking wind/potentially creating a thin layer of warm water between me and the fabric)?

Or should I opt for something like a 2mm wetsuit top? Surf shirt? Sun Shirt?

I saw a good deal on an O'neill 2mm wetsuit top with 1 mm arms but it's a large and my 5'8 175 ass usually wears mediums. However, I am pretty muscular and my measurements fall right in between the websites medium-large sizing so it might actually fit me well.

My legs don't really get cold and i'd like to stick to just wearing board shorts.

This was my second time surfing without a wetsuit and man I gotta say I felt freer and more in touch with the elements. Ideally, I'd like something with low drag and easy range of motion

I'm also not sure how things will feel during the daytime when the air is 80-85 degrees but I know ill want long sleeve UV protection.

TLDR: What do you wear in 73 degree air and water temp?

Buying a board

Buying a board for my son. I want to find one used if I can so I can’t really choose a specific board. All I know is that he loved this one particular board - a 5’10 Al Merrick ‘Rocket Wide’. 5’10 x 20 x 2 5/8, 33.5L.

What’s the best way to find something similar? Is it as simple as matching dimensions and volume to those or should I be considering something else? Certain brands? I’m clueless so any help appreciated.

I Have Five Months To 'Learn To Surf'

I'm on sabbatical for the next five months, probably the last oppotunity in my adult life to get enough time in the water to learn enough for it to stick. I am 39 years old and not in very good shape.

I've been 'surfing' for three weeks now, at the Westport jetty in WA. Took a lesson on an 10ft epoxy longbord and was able to paddle onto and stand up on a knee high unbroken wave, I was a daily boogyboarder from like age 8-14 which I think has helped.

Right now, I'm surfing a 8'6" Super Burrito foamie rental and still struggling to stand on broken waves, but getting very close and my baseline fitness and core strength is the actual barrier right now. I think I've dialed in where I need to be to minimize work and maximize attempts on small broken waves though, so hoping subsequent trips get a lot more efficient.

Bought a buddies van, so even though the break is about an hour and twenty minute drive door to door I should be able to surf four days a week by sleeping in the van twice a week. Wife says she is cool with this. This means I can conceivably be doing 6-8 ~ 2 hr sessions in a week with twice a days.

Buying my own wetsuit and some other paraphanelia tomorrow, goal is to get my own board within the next month.

So:

What do i need to be cognizant of to maximize learning in the water?

What should I do between sessions?

Any reccomendations for core strength and mobility protocols?

Am I correct to think a big longboard is a wise first choice?

Other advice?

Struggling to catch waves by myself

So I’ve taken a couple of lessons and was able to stand up on a few waves in the whitewash. These were where the instructor was pushing me into the wave though and telling me when to paddle. I’ve gone out on my own a few times and I’ve almost gotten to my feet a few times but by the time I am starting to stand up the white wash has lost power. Anyone have any advice on positioning myself so I actually have some speed? When the instructor is doing it he knows where to sit and push me into it but by myself I feel like I keep picking the weakest whitewash. I’m sorry I don’t have a video or anything. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Linda Mar vs. Santa Cruz for 1 day of surf?

Looking for suggestions - Linda Mar or SC?

I have 1 day to surf, landing SFO on Sunday morning. Have a rental car, would drive straight to the beach.

Question: is spending 3 hours (total) driving to SC a waste of time when Linda Mar is right there?

My level: I'm probably classified as a Beginner/Intermediate - I can paddle and catch my own waves, and have been able to ride down the line

I'm also open to doing a 1:1 lesson in the morning and continuing solo for the rest of the day
