Mech Porn By chance I happened to get an MCOIL very early in my Career...So I slapped it on a Firestarter

And HOLLLLLLY SHIT! This little bastard is the purest example of "Punching above his weight".

I paired him with a pilot that has sure footed and decent gunnery and I can put 125 energy damage at a pinpoint location.

I had one mission where I completely locked down a Thunderbolt because I legged it in one shot and just kept pouring fire into it.

11/10 and highly recommend

Upvotes

Got the game about 3 years ago and played a vanilla ( with all official expansions) then shelved it for a while to play some other games. Just got back in to it but vanilla just isnt hitting right. I need more and more.Battletech is like a drug and i need a stronger hit.

What mod is the best?

Are enemies just completely random?

I'm seeming to always have awful luck with what's on a mission in terms of salvage - seems if I chose high money it's heavy mechs or units with improved weapons, if I choose salvage it's a bunch of lights with stock gear. Is there a way to tell if a mission might have good salvage or should you always just go middle ground just in case?

BEXT: How to play to have fun?

So, after having a lot of fun (let's just say in advance that "lot of fun" for me is 60 hrs of gameplay, I don't have much time for gaming :( ) with vanilla Battletech, I wanted to see more of Battletech history myself, installed BEXT and started Career mode.

I enjoy the variety of mechs, much better AI and improvements to mechanics (A LOT more smashing!), but after ~10 hours I kind of struggle to have fun:

- most my initial missions seems to go against pirates - I already blew my chance for cool gear in Campaign mode, but I have since learned the value of black market. Will be hard to use it if pirates hate me

- half of the rest of the missions are convoy intercept - I never liked them, and in BEXT they seem much harder anyway - convoy sprints to pickup location in like 2-3 turns, stomping vehicles no longer one-shots them; I tried half-skull convoy intercept half a dozen times and the results were... not great

- duels make me want to cry, tonnage limit 35 tons, I have just 1 mech that's not 20 ton and not 40 ton and it's Panther. I got my ass handed to me by an Urbanmech, which is fair, but on other attempts I was simply destroyed

- because of the above, I have like 2-3 missions per system that I can do (and those I'm able to win and have fun), but it a) makes finances a struggle b) makes me spend a lot of time in transit

I have a Vulcan with COIL-L (and that is awesome!, even though in vanilla I had a Jenner with COIL-L shooting 125 dmg every other turn, it's still good), Falcon (which is, I think, my favorite, once it gets close to an enemy), Urbie, Panther, Locust and Wasp. Not bad per se, but at this stage of the game I don't have much tactical flexibility - I can't afford to switch loadouts for each mission, and even if I could, I can't afford extra weapons...

Was I just unlucky in initial lottery? Am I missing something (like: I'm expected to spend initial 30 hours doing the grind)? Is there some trick to be learned for convoy missions?

Perhaps this is a mod for people who can play, like, 200 hours per month? I can afford around 20...

Best Kill Ever

So, going against an assault deployment. I've got my Utake paper-kite out with Grampa in battle armor. First move, we get onto the flank of 5 big guys in a valley.
Turn 2, I decide to wade into the middle of them and get behind this Stone Rhino. Drop Gramps.
He charges in, after much complaining about being asleep and what not.
Then it's "You think I'm in melee with you, but no, YOU'RE in melee with ME!" ...and, WTH?
Gramps one-shotted the Stone Rhino. And it was a 100% salvage. Woot! Never had this happen prior! WTG Gramps!

Mods BTA battle armour

Hello all,

I was wondering if there is a way to disable battle armour in the mod. I think they are annoying and if there isnanway to remove them from the game it would be great.

Thanks in advance

Discussion It's a Trap!

I would like to hear your take on things best to be avoided in the game.

I just installed my first Beagle Active Probe but I'm wondering if that weight is best used elsewhere. I'm sure it has its uses, but it just got me thinking: what in the game seems like a good idea, but isn't worth the opportunity cost?

I'm sure that everything *can* be made to be effective. What's best left alone, as a general rule?

For example, flamers are a lot of fun, I'm sure, and with a lot of investment a whole lance can be designed around gimping the opposition, but at this stage I would rather just blow stuff up than lock it down.

Does anything come to mind?

Alright fellow mechwarriors, I need advice on how to beat this one (BEX 2.0)

Spawning at the bottom of a bowl (nowhere to go but uphill), instant enemy reinforcements, in the corner of the map (can't fight and run), impassable mountain on the left side to keep you from running and gunning, at night so my lrms aren't hitting anything (and it's BEX, so LRMs are near useless anyway). Other than reloading an old save or surrendering in bad faith, how would you approach winning this mission? I've got at rifleman (2x AC5s, LL), Centurion (AC5, LRM10, LRM 5), Vindicator (LL, 2x Medium) and a raven (LRM 15, 2x mediums).

Crybaby Where am I going wrong?

Title, basically. I've done some reading and still can't figure out why my missions are so variable. It seems I either stomp or get stomped, no in-between. I've recently picked up the game on steam sale, got the base game plus Flashpoint, Urban Warfare, and Heavy Metal DLCs. No mods. Have done a few story missions to the point where I've liberated the prison, I know the chick from the tutorial is still alive, and I've been given the big ship we rescued from the moon. I'm currently fumbling around doing 1-1.5 skull missions desperately trying to keep my finances in the black. Already had to scrap a few light mechs in transit to avoid bankruptcy. Have a few questions.

Skills - what should I be going for? Most of my guys have the split firing ability simply because I put points into gunnery because I was sick of missing shots. Seemed useful at first to get the most out of the stock loadouts but I've been trying to specialise my mechs to certain ranges and now it seems a lot less useful. What should I be going for? I'm leaning towards piloting simply because it seems to at the very least not be counter to itself - gunnery can't seem to decide if it wants to be multi target or single target, and if you're going deep on tactics it's presumably for the indirect fire bonuses - but then it gives you sensor lock, which seems like it would be better to have on literally any mech other than the one doing the indirect fire, given that sensor lock uses your fire action.

Evasive light mechs - what's the best way of stripping points of evasion? I'm really sick of having 20% hit chances. The game keeps telling me that bigger is better when it comes to mechs but the lights tend to give me a lot of trouble. The whole part damage thing makes it seem like I should be focus firing one target until it's dead and then moving on to another, but with the amount of evasion the light mechs have I can have my whole lance fire at a single mech and do bugger all damage. For all that big mechs are probably supposed to be scarier I'm at least hitting them and stripping off armour, and it just feels like a matter of time until they go down. With light mechs if I get unlucky with hits I can spend a few turns firing for very little effect.

And speaking of luck - is the game really as luck based as it seems? I got this because I wanted to break away from xcom so I'm used to luck just screwing you sometimes, but holy shit. The individual structure and armour for each part is making luck a huge factor in how well a mission goes, I've had times where I've easily pumped double the fire into a mech as it has into me yet I'm on the brink of death and they're yet to take structure damage. I know called shots are a thing if you have enough morale or if they're knocked down, but you can't guarantee either being available when you need them and as far as I know you also can't use it at the start of a mission when it would do you the most good. Even when you can use them the odds are still ridiculous - less than a 20% chance to hit the leg I'm specifically aiming at? Are you seriously calling yourself a trained pilot? Feels like the called shots I have access to at the moment should be the base firing mode and called shots should have extra effects on top of that. It really feels like no matter how well you think you're playing, you can have a moment of bad luck that bends you over - for example, the first time I played the icebox mission I took out the defences, broke through the door of the prison, and had the enemy lance activate. I only had one enemy mech in view so I had my whole lance fire at it, think I blew off an arm. Then one of the other enemy mechs walked out from behind a wall and killed a previously undamaged mech in a single salvo. Mission over at that point - just took another turn or two to realise it.

And speaking of my whole lance - how many mechs and pilots should I have? I've unlocked the second row of bays but I think i only have six mechs and five pilots. Sometimes I can go multiple missions in a row with no injuries or repairs needed, but then one bad mission leaves me too shorthanded to take contracts for nearly a month. Like I said, I came here from xcom so I'm used to losing guys but my gut feel is that mechs and mech pilots should be a lot less disposable than random soldiers.

And on the topic of contracts and bad missions, I often get through fine. But when I get fucked I get fucked hard, and it doesn't even seem to be too predictable. I took a contract last night, was a one skull mission. Started out engaging a lance of four light mechs, all in cover. Having a hell of a time just hitting them (20% hit chance, yay), and even when I managed to wing them they took less damage due to cover. It was one of the most frustrating missions I'd taken but I thought it was doable, right up until the second lance of mechs over the hill started opening up with their LRMs. Four medium mechs on my side vs six light and two medium for them, all at the same time. I lost two mechs and pilots, and the survivors were wounded and damaged. I had taken high cash to try to stay liquid but just the repairs from the mission cost more than my payout did, and then I was even further in the red from having to hire new pilots.

New mechs - what's the best way to get new mechs? I've been trying to take out legs to improve my salvage odds but even with that I'm not getting enough parts, or at least not enough from the same type - got about fifteen partially built mechs in storage and have finished maybe two. I also can't really improve my lance when the game just keeps throwing light mechs at me. I've bought a part of an Awesome and I paid out a million c-bills during one of the ship events and ended up with a part for a Black Knight, but I've never seen either in the field and I don't have the money to fly to a planet that has a part, buy it, and then fly back to a lower level planet that I can handle the missions of.

Weapons - should I be going for bigger weapons or more weapons? I played the mechwarrior games years ago and it seemed to be a pretty solid rule that bigger weapons were pretty much always better on a ton for ton basis, which was a large factor behind bigger mechs being better. However, given the mechanics of called shots and crits, it seems to me that as long as you have the weapon slots you're better off with two smaller weapons than you are with one big one - am I understanding correctly or just using the wrong weapons?

And finally, mech movement and sprinting - is there any way to increase the mech speed, and is sprinting actually worth it? I've got a few mechs that are so damn slow they can actually jump further than they can move, and sprinting adds maybe two more pips of range which is absolutely not worth it when it means giving up firing.

Mods Mods that nerf kicking?

Ok, I realize I can just not do this but the min/maxer in me really struggles with that. Also, disclaimer: I haven't played in a couple years but I'd like to get back into it.

I love the BTA/BTAU mods for the depth they bring while still being roughly true to vanilla (in comparison to RogueTech for example) but I find the kicking mechanic so overpowered that it kinda takes the fun out of it.

Are there any mods or settings that take the kicking to remove all evasion pips out of it? I'd actually prefer no kicking at all. It kinda takes me out of the atmosphere imagining a 100T robot doing Kung Fu.

WTF could have happened to my campaign saves? The game doesn't see any, but the SGS1 folder has 6 .SAV files in it.

It started when I lost steam cloud sync between desktop and laptop. I tried toggling that, toggling that and restarting, verifying game files, and reinstalling the entire game.

I've even checked Steam's remote files, downloaded a save from there and tried manually restoring it. The game always reverted to the old saves. So I moved them out from the desktop and nuked the saved game folder. Shut everything down, and fired up the laptop.

Laptop turns on, syncs with steam cloud, and shows no saves available to load. I can't even get the game to see the files I backed up that were working. Search engines give me links to people who looked in the wrong place. There's an unanswered similar result on steam from 3 or 5 years ago.

Does modtek 4.5 block saves if they're different mod lists? Only thing left I can think of.

hunchback appreciation

So i've played only a few hours of this game, roughly 10h and still have one Heavy Mech, an Orion that I bought.

For what I can tell, the game is tough. Maybe I'm just dumb, but AI looks intelligent, focusing one mech at a time, even when I'm making it retreat. I really need to play carefully.

When I played mechwarriors 5 merc, I saw a before Hunch/After Hunch effect, and I was wondering if such things also exists on this game.

In one of the early liberation mission (campaign) I managed to take the Hunchback with the AC20 and gave it to glitch.

And Holy shit. Glitch is doing some crazy headshot with it, and whenever I want something to be deleted, I know I can trust her and the big canon on her shoulder.

Never truly learned to love and respect the Hunchback, well now I do.

BEX--What's the best heavy or assault mech to mount a COIL-L on?

My question is above. I've had extremely good success running COIL weaponry on the Assassin both in the vanilla game and BEX. But when facing heavies, my Assassin can easily get one-shotted. What's a good, fast heavy or assault mech that I could mount a COIL-L on?

Update: I tried to put my COIL-L on my new Charger, but it turned out there was nowhere it would fit due to the XL engines and internal armor that can't be removed. If I ever find a COIL-M in this save, I'll try that.

Discussion What is the music

I've just made the liberation of Smithon. During the mission, one of the most banger theme I've heard crossed my ears.

I tried to look which was it, but to no avail, I can't find the motif.

I also know it's from this release trailer : https://youtu.be/tsIMfOo_VO0

Can you help me find the song ? I need it to be my morning alarm clock

Announcement The Medium Mech category is almost instantly bypassed every campaign

Started out with 4 lights (DLC or not, the Assassin is trash). Played those for quite a while. Finally managed to get a Wolverine (put the UAC-5 on it).

Two battles later, added a Hunchback.

Next planet got a Rifleman piece and bought rest. Next planet got a Warhammer piece and bought the rest.

Now my lance is a Rifleman, Warhammer, Wolverine, Firestarter... and the Firestarter was not in my starting mech list.

Modded BTA Defense in depth question

Can Defense in depth mission just keep going on forever? It seemed like every new lance I managed to kill before the timer ends would just end up spawning another one. This dragged on for like an hour before I just let the turn timer run out and not killing the lance.
