Looking for skis

Hi there,
I’m an instructor working in Australia, Perisher to be more precise. It’s my third winter here and I hope to be doing many more, however I can’t notice that the second hand ski market is pretty poor. Things are either super old or geared towards kids and interschools racing.

I have a set of FIS men’s slalom skis, they’re from separate pairs, and one ski has very little life left in it, if any at all. If anyone knows of any second hand sites that I’m yet to find to buy snow gear from I’d be eternally grateful. I’ve tried Facebook and eBay to my dismay there is nothing remotely what I’m looking for on there and I’m scrolling daily.

Cheers

Gold Coast → Sydney → Snowy Mountains road trip (2WD) – Advice on roads, conditions & what to bring?

Hi everyone,

A few friends and I are planning a road trip from the Gold Coast to the Snowy Mountains this winter and would really appreciate some advice from people who've done it recently.

Our plan is:

  • Day 1: Drive from the Gold Coast to Sydney.
  • Stay overnight in Sydney.
  • Day 2: Drive from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains for a day trip (or possibly stay overnight if recommended).

We'll be driving a 2WD passenger car (not an SUV or 4WD), so we're wondering:

  • Is a 2WD suitable for visiting the Snowy Mountains?
  • Which areas are the most accessible and safest for 2WD vehicles? (Perisher, Thredbo, Charlotte Pass, Jindabyne, etc.)
  • Are snow chains required for 2WDs, and where is the best place to hire them?
  • How are the roads from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains during winter? Any steep or difficult sections?
  • Are there any road closures or weather conditions we should watch out for?
  • Is it better to stay in Jindabyne instead of doing a day trip from Sydney?
  • Any tips on parking, fuel stops, food, or places worth visiting along the way?
  • Are there any essential accessories or items we should carry besides warm clothing? (Tyre chains, emergency kit, windshield washer fluid, shovel, etc.)
  • Is there anything first-time snow visitors usually overlook?

We're aiming for a safe and enjoyable trip rather than anything too adventurous, so any recommendations, road tips, or lessons from your own experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Is a dehumidifier useful at all?

I was thinking of bringing a dehumidifier that I already had at home to the apartment Im staying at on mountain. Im just thinking last year I had my gear next to the heaters and the drying cupboard that barely fit anything both of which left my gear just dry enough but slightly damp, especially the gloves. Im driving up and dropping off my gear next to the apartment so its not a big deal as I have plenty of space and wont have to lug it around. Still wondering if its worth while though or if there are other strategies to keep gear dry overnight without having to purchase a boot/glove drier.

Avoiding paying to drive my car to Falls Creek for 5 days

Hello team, my friends and I are broke uni students looking for some help. We are staying at Falls Creek in a few weeks for a friday-tuesday stint and do not have the facilities to pay $345 to park our car there for that long. We have another friend with a seasons car pass (albeit his dads!) who is coming up on the saturday. Would it be possible to drive up on friday, drop our stuff at the accom, drive back down at park at mount beauty and then get the bus back up? or hitch hike? or do we have to pay to even get to the resort in the first place on the friday?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ski lifts without lift pass readers

What's stopping people from not buying a lift pass and just using the ski lifts without the electronic lift pass reader?

Last time I went to Buller last year I recall seeing at least one of these lifts. Would require a short hike to reach it

Unless I'm mistaken and they had another way of reading your pass?

Is skiing over other people’s equipment a big deal?

Snowboarder here- multiple times this season now I’ve had my edges tapped/hit while in the ski line or had my board ridden over, and when it first happened hit them with a quick ‘what the fuck’ which was my instinctive reaction but as I got no apology I assumed I was overreacting and they were confused about why I was angry at them, and was ambivalent about letting it go.

Then there was one time I was starting down a hill (that awkward part where you shuffle forwards after strapping in) and accidentally ran over a lady’s skiis after we collided on a similar trajectory (think X shaped paths) and she cursed me out for riding over them even after I apologised multiple times.

Honestly I thought that was a bit of an overreaction- given that I was actually sorry and said so- and didn’t think it warranted such anger.

I haven’t noticed chipping on my own board and most people haven’t treated it as such a big deal- but what do you guys think? Is it that big of a deal? Could my own board be damaged and what would this damage look like?

Does anyone know a company that might have a jig for a Trab TR1 binding? I've tried AlpSport, Rythm and Wilderness.

Hope the forecast will hold up! ☃️

(Sorry, reposting to fix the formatting. Yes! I read your comment that the resorts might only end up getting 10 cm.)

Snow gear August

Heading to Perisher mid August for the first time. Can I have some recommendations for shoes and where to buy non ugly pants and a jacket.

We are going to snowboard Perisher and trek Mt Kozie, ideally want something comfy and baggy and my underlays should do the trick with keeping me warm.

Snow levels

This is only my second season, so I don't really have the historical perspective or experience to judge.

  1. Can we expect any big dumps in late July/early August, or is that usually something that happens more in early July and would have already happened by now?
  2. Given how low snow levels are, do you think we have the base to get us through into September, or will the season finish early August?

I'm mainly going up to Mount Buller.

Falls creek snow

Given the snow conditions this year, if it continues with no snow forecast over the next few weeks. What are the chances the resort will officially close early say in Aug? I’m booked first weekend of Sept, and my hotel will only give a refund if the resort closes for the rest of the season, even if there is no snow.

Snowboarding Trip

Hello all, I am an American planning to make a trip to your beautiful country this August to do some snowboarding.

My buddy has flaked on me while I have already gone through the process of my tourist visa. Is there anyone in the Melbourne area that needs a snowboarding buddy? I would love to meet some new people and make some new friends, even if you don’t snowboard.

If anyone is interested, leave a comment or PM me.

I got sick of skiing solo

Post image
13 Upvotes

I got sick of spending the day solo on the mountain and at the end of the day find out that half my mates were up there too?

I’ve built the app ShredTogether to solve this. It lets you see which of your friends are on the mountain in advance, so you can actually plan to ride together instead of finding out after the fact.

Free on iPhone, Android coming soon.

You’d be doing me a huge favour if you try it out, and if you’ve got any ideas or improvements please reach out!

I also need a few android users to help test it out before I can release it publicly, if you’re on android shoot me a message and I’ll add you to the beta

Perisher ski instructor pushed me out of the line

Hey community and Perisher management, I’m sharing an incredibly frustrating experience from June 28th that left a very bad taste in my mouth, especially since my official complaint has been completely ignored by the resort.

Around 2:00 PM on Sunday 28 June, at the Mitchell T-bar queue in Perisher Valley, the queue setup was chaotic with very short sorting ropes. While everyone was trying to navigate the ambiguous lanes, a female Perisher instructor and a tall male skier next to her started actively and aggressively pushing their skis against mine to squeeze me out of the line.

When I stayed in my spot, the instructor turned around with a hostile look and snapped, "Can you stop pushing forward?" I politely explained I was just following the flow, and she aggressively barked back that the people ahead were her students and they were "together."

To ensure safety and avoid a scene, I politely said it was confusing and let them pass.

Here is my issue:
1. The Infrastructure is Flawed: The poor layout at Mitchell T-bar forces paying guests into awkward, unorganized bottlenecks.

  1. Abuse of Uniform: If they were a lesson group, they should have aligned before entering the queue. Wearing a Perisher uniform does NOT give an instructor the privilege to physically push paying guests out of a public line and then falsely accuse them of "pushing."

Instructor Info for Identification:
- Caucasian female, late 40s/50s, distinct British accent (stated she’s been in Australia for 20+ years).

- Skiing on skis, managing a student group at Mitchell T-bar around 2 PM on June 28.

I lodged an official complaint weeks ago, but silence from customer service. Is this the standard of professionalism and guest safety Perisher proudly stands by now?

What time to get to Perisher?

Going to Perisher in a couple of weeks. What time is the latest time to get to the mountain?

Not asking from a carpark point of view, but in terms of being able to get enough time on the slopes vs lift lines etc.

10am too late? Have my own gear so won’t need to rent.
