My fav romance scene from Atlanta is when Van and Earn are dancing in the hotel room, and he asks her, "did you steal that wig?" And then she kisses him to exit the conversation. A big part of Van's character is to be this mother, wife, caregiver, provider role for people around her. She was constantly expected to keep up with these roles when Earn could barely hold down a job, and she was taking care of him when he was homeless on top of all her responsibilities. So when she decides to run away from all those labels, she kinda crashes out in her entire Paris arc, but before that, the shift in her behavior is shown when she first gets to Europe and does things that are inconceivable to her character, like, stealing that wig. But for all her strange behavior, I think an underlying conflict was what was going to happen once she broke out of those roles, Would her friends still love her, did earn ever love a van that wasn't always carrying the world?
Would she even be herself? And even before he asks her whether she stole the wig, he improvises and gets them a room as an apology for the accusers "racism" Then, when they're dancing, he doubts whether that accusation was really because of racism or because Van really did steal that wig. And when she kisses him as a means to end the conversation, that, to me at least, shows that she wasn't entirely ready to be perceived in a way that wasn't her" usual self". And because of this interpretation, I honestly think their camping scene was even more powerful. In season 2 earn tells a group of ladies that Van does everything, from mothering their child to caring for him, and that he couldn't possibly imagine even looking at another woman, while also acknowledging his complete lack of use in their relationship, he's aware that he couldn't deserve Van in a million years, but he's also completely in love with her, so 2 seasons later when he offers her to come live with him in San Francisco, and she says" I can't just uproot my entire life because you love me as our daughter’s mom" he tells that he desires her as a woman, that he fully and completely loves her, then she agrees to go with him, and they get back together. This may seem like a" perfect girl goes back to bum boyfriend" trope (though he's not really a bum at that point" but I honestly think that by rephrasing his initial confession in front of those ladies in a light that suits the new Van without centering her roles before her identity as a person reassured her that she's loved even when she's not a mother or a wife. And because she never lost love for him, they obviously got back together for their daughter and out of love for each other. Van and Earn’s dynamic has honestly become my favourite romance the more I think about it. It's so simple and raw and yet so unromanticized that their conclusion feels less forced and more imperfect and genuine. Also love the BADBADNOTGOOD addition.

I just recently rewatched the Sinterklaas episode (I love season 3) and I don’t understand why people say that Dirk, the venue guy, is racist. Yes he’s ignorant, but he is just as ignorant as any non-black person imo. Am I missing something as a black American?

I’ve really fallen for this show due to its dark humor and experimentation with format, and this episode was the perfect storm of both. I thought the concept of “reparations as a horror movie” was brilliant and I laughed my ass off from beginning to end, the lead actor was perfectly cast I found myself just laughing at his constant horrified expression.

I’m not exactly surprised to see it’s a divisive one. I said after the episode was finished “that was like the darkest Chappelle’s Show skit of all time” and I’m sure that will play to everyone who watches it a little different. However I’m interested in just talking about the episode and other people’s interpretations and I’m beyond excited to see where the show goes next because it truly feels like it could be anywhere

Yes I know this opinion isn’t exactly controversial but whenever this episode is brought up people say it’s not good but don’t really delve into what makes it bad and how that differs from the rest of the show which is amazing. From my view, there are 3 main things that make Atlanta a great show that almost all of its episodes have.

1: Likeable and intriguing characters who the viewers are interested to follow

2: Having great relatable and absurd humor

3: Meaningful and powerful social commentary

In my personal opinion, this episode does not contain any of the three. All of the new characters of the episode are either boring milk toast personalities like the main character white guy or obnoxiously hatable like the black lady who wants the guy’s house for slavery. There isn’t much humor in the episode at all except the irony of white people having to pay for their ancestor’s sins. I guess the social commentary aspect is the most present part of the 3 but it just doesn’t hit for me personally especially since Atlanta sets a high bar for itself with the other episodes.

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the show and wasn’t one of those cornballs who said they would quit the show after that episode. It’s just that after that episode it really got me thinking about what actually makes Atlanta a goated show and how “The Big Payback” is lacking whatever elements that go into the other episodes. Anyone agree?

one of my favorite scenes in TV period is the scene of Ern walking home from Vans with elevators playing in his headphones . the beat from the song matches the night scene of the streets of ATL so good, and the songs themes go with where Al and Ern are at in the stages of their careers . And the ending of him in his storage unit With a couple of hundred bucks after giving Van the most of his money … Ern was handling his responsibilities and being a man . Even sleeping in a storage unit .. love that scene

So basically ive been watching this series for a while now and ive been facing issue understanding the episodes in depth, ive to go on n search on the reddit n all to get what the episode meant. It makes me seem like a stupid....is that only happening with me?

They seem to clearly be making fun of internet celebrities like him, but there’s also times where they somewhat “respect” his hustle and acknowledge everyone is exploiting something at the end of the day

New Apple TV show directed by Hiro Murai (the primary director of Atlanta), and it hits so many of the same comedic beats mixed with similar surrealist elements.

Truly scratched the same itch for me that Atlanta did, couldn’t recommend more.

I assume Donald Glover intended for people to have many interpretations, but I can't stop thinking about Darius having deja vu and looking for the dog in the opening scene. Was any of this actually real?

What if Al and Earn died that night? What if the whole series is various dep sessions? Darius coping with what happened to his friends that night, and the opening scene is him in the tank revisiting that night.

I think about the scene with his brother, maybe he visits those he has lost in his sessions.

What if the only scene that is real is the one in the pharmacy where he has the conversation with the woman waiting on meds for her kid?

Idk I'm really high.

Rewatching it, I’m convinced it’s Darius’s dream. In the very first episode, when they’re outside after pulling the gun on that guy, Darius sees that weird dog and immediately says, “Wait, this is weird.” It’s like he’s the only one who realizes something is off. After seeing the finale, that scene feels like a huge clue.

I just finished the last episode. I’ve been purposely avoiding finishing this show since it came out TEN YEARS AGO!!

I’ve avoided spoilers. While watching the 2nd last episode I did see the name of the final episode “it was all a dream” and immediately started thinking about all the possibilities of how it may go. Bittersweet shock watching those last few seconds.

Show feels so alive. 4years late but I would watch an episode when i felt like I needed it.

In season 2 ep 3, when Alfred and Darius are in the studio with the crazy rapper who gets his producer beat up, I feel like looking back this guy was so diddy coded

Spoilers if you ain’t watched season 2 episode 6 yet (arguably the best one).
I noticed a couple of lil details in the Teddy Perkins episode that i wanna share, they gonna get more subtle as they go.

1. Teddy Perkins is played by Earn 🤯🤯😂
   
2. When Teddy Perkins talks about rap being “insufficient as an art form”, he laughs when Darius suggests that “now and again, people just wanna have a good time”. Because of how his father treated him, Teddy is genuinely unable to process the idea of art and enjoyment going together.
   
3. Darius compares Teddy to Sammy Sosa with the skin bleaching. Not only did Sosa comment on the comparisons between him and Michael Jackson concerning the whitened skin back in 2009, but as a child he got the nickname MIKEY.
   
4. The house is FULL of candles and such, despite him keeping the whole house dark supposedly for the sake of Benny’s skin condition. Just about every surface has multiple candles on it.
   
5. Early in the episode Perkins ate a large egg, called an “owl’s CASKET”, only to later state “you can’t make an omelette without breaking a few eggs”.
   
6. Perkins takes Darius’s picture (with the flash on) despite having a house full of cameras

Just some strange details i was tryna point out. i intentionally didn’t wanna go into the identities of Teddy and Benny because that would draw away attention from everything else. Thoughts?

Occasionally when I’m in a rut, I’ll put on show and remember how brilliant it was. Teddy Perkins, Yikes!
