Subreddit Update Politics Free August

We’re going to try something, Athens.

In the name of keeping it weird, we’re going for a full month of no politics in August. These posts do nothing but stir people up and attract tourists who do more pot stirring, and I think we all need a break from it.

So, this will serve as both announcement and warning:

**Do not post anything of a political nature between August 1st and August 31st 2026. **

If you do, you’ll find a removal reason and/or modmail in your notifications.

In the meantime: keep it funky. Post weird shit. Funny things. Just anything but politics.

I’m moving to Athens soon and love thrifting. Does anyone have any recommendations for places to go that aren’t crazy overpriced?

Question / Request Athenians Tell Us: Do You Tailgate?

Tell us: Do you tailgate?

And if so, why?

Yes, I keep less than one car length between me and the car in front of me.
Yes, I keep less than two car lengths between me and the car in front of me.
No, I would like to avoid being sued by Morgan and Morgan.
Unsure (This is for the people that are unsure if they are living in a simulation or in real life)
Unsure if I am unsure about being unsure. I do drive uninsured though.
I drive a bicycle and/or motorcycle so traffic laws don’t apply to me.

Five hours ago, our mod got a response from the mayor (on the subject of homelessness) and then declared no-politics August a couple minutes later

Just pointing that this is a community forum where our mayor even contributes - and where a petty tyrant made a unilateral decision to block the type of dialogue he participates in (without skipping a beat from such a discussion).

It’s a great book! Shocked we’re never going to have anything like that in the slightest inside of this subreddit.

Thoughts?

Question / Request Trustworthy Gutter company

Hey guys, I’m really new to home maintenance and all that kind of stuff and I was wondering if anybody on here had a gutter guy that they trusted. I recently had a not so wonderful experience with some of the top rated Athens HVAC companies( on Google anyway) and in order to avoid the hassle, this time I figured I would just ask the people who they trusted. So if you guys have any recommendations on trustworthy companies that have done gutter work for you I would appreciate it. Even if you just know a guy, but you can vouch for his work I would appreciate it.
-Thanks!

Local News Politics Only July

We’re going to try something, Athens.

In the name of keeping it weird, we’re going for a full week of only politics in July. These posts do nothing but stir people up and attract tourists who do more pot stirring, and I think we all need more of it.

So, this will serve as both announcement and warning:

**ONLY post anything of a political nature between July 22nd and July 29th 2026. **

In the meantime: keep it funky. Post weird shit. Funny things. Just anything politics.

Question / Request Does anyone else have a weird non-cold cold?

For the past week or so, I've had persistent sinus pressure and a dry, stuffy nose. Otherwise, I am completely functional and feel fine enough, but I can't kick these symptoms. Nothing changes if I spend more or less time outdoors, either, so I'm not certain that it's allergies.

Does anyone else have this? Is something going around? If so, can y'all leave me out of it next time?

Looking for commercial rental

Hi! I’m looking for a commercial rental for a yoga studio, so it’d have to be zoned retail. I’m having a hard time finding anything! Ideally there is an “office” already built inside the space.
Looking for about 1500 sqft
Would like to be on the west side or Normaltown area.
Ideally $1900-2300
Parking for atleast 8 cars

Subreddit Chat & Moderation

The no-posting-or-discussing-political-issues announcement seems....very wrong.

How can we post about anything substantial related to Athens without it being political? This isn't, like, AthensGAWeather subreddit, where political comments might be more out of place.

This is a subreddit about everything pertaining to Athens... Including the goings-on, mayor and commission meetings, etc...

So... To block posts of a political nature is clearly counter to the stated acceptable topics of the subreddit.

2nd point, and this is not a personal attack, but mod team, do we really want a single user tagged as UGA freshman to be deciding or announcing things like this? I'm sure lots of moderation stuff happens behind the scenes and I don't mean to doubt competency, but, this is.... A little shocking. It's not April 1, right? ;)

We'll be sharing information and talking points about these amendments, helping draft emails to your commissioners, and giving guidance on speaking at the commission meeting if that is a thing you feel compelled to do.

We welcome all perspectives and hot takes.

Popcorn will be provided.

Dryer vent kits

Because there is no venting to the outside of this older apartment, my apartment manager gave me a dryer vent “kit” which you add an inch of water to catch dryer lint so that it doesn’t blow all over the apartment. Instead, the 💦 blows all over! WTH?

Question / Request Summer jobs in Athens for teens?

My son will be 14 next summer, and since I've heard summer jobs for 14 year old boys are few and far between, I thought I would start to research jobs this summer to see if anything is out there, maybe camp counselors? And if next summer he's considered too young, at least I'll have some ideas for when he's older.

If anyone knows of teens working in Athens, please let me know. Thanks!

MAGA NIMBYs on parade tonight

ADU discussion with the Mayor and Commission is getting wacky. One guy says everyone is going to build a high rise gulag in their backyard. Another guy says he has never seen so many collared shirts in one place. Lissy Link wants to replace her carport with a granny house. The Mayor-elect is worried about intrastructure, whatever he thinks that is, and wants to take our zoning back to the drawing board.

Any local shops to help digitize photo slides?

I have a box of 35mm slides from my grandparents that I would like to digitize. I lack any and all equipment to do this (other than googling “white background” on my iPad, setting the slide on the screen, and then taking a picture with my phone lol). Any local shops that could help? Or stores that have equipment to rent/borrow to produce high quality digital scans?

Thank you!
