My cousin has autism. She constantly beats the shit outta everyone. My mom (her aunt) her mom and my grandmother and her 4 year old sister. We all have no clue what to do we have tried everything. I'm guessing that many folks who live in rural Maine have watched out-of-staters move in with a lot of optimism and determination, face the realities of not finding healthcare, not finding services, being isolated etc. and then leave.

But I have also noticed there are people here from out of state who have stayed a long time, or permanently.

All the general suggestions are pretty clear: get involved, be helpful and patient, be respectful of local norms & culture, and you need to be able to deal with the elements. Lots of driving.

So what have you observed, whether you're a transplant or from away, when you're watching new people come in? What indicates that folks will probably stay, and what suggests that their time here is limited?

For context I'm from out of state, have been in rural Maine for about a year and a half. I love winter and snow. Especially interested in perspectives from those who are intentionally seeking a whole shift in the way they live, using natural resources in a more sustainable way and supporting their local communities.

But we are looking for the best recommendations for tent camping in Acadia ( I know it’s late in the season but looking for best options for a small 2 or 3 day getaway). We have a lil backpacking tent and don’t need a super fancy campsite or a lot of amenities. Looking for scenic mountain/forest vibes, good hiking and fishing, maybe even a moose encounter ☺️

We are going to be living at latitude, and am currently seeking a new grad RN job at Maine Health. I graduate in two weeks and will be ready for a job to start as soon as September. I’ve had a really hard time finding any positions that are day shift at Maine health other than BEAN5 which I’ve heard is notoriously bad (I found this out after I accepted the job offer). Im interviewing for a PACU position in the next two weeks, but if I don’t get that job, I’m worried to start at Bean 5 and feel not very supported at all since I’ve heard some scary things. I am going to graduate school at University of Maine. Any tips on where best to live, have a social life, hiking trails....etc? I haven't been in school for almost a decade and I am quite nervous. I'm moving from Arizona but I've done my fair share of traveling. I went to Ethiopia for the Peace Corps and I also have lived in Montana. I genuinely loved both places. Cold genuinely doesn't bother me as I spent half my childhood in northern AZ.

My husband, our toddler, and I are planning to move back to Maine from the Mid-Atlantic next summer. We previously lived in the Waterville/Augusta area and didn't mind it, but we ended up there largely because of our jobs and its proximity to the highway.

This time, we'd like to be more intentional about where we settle and are looking for recommendations on family-friendly communities. Good public schools are a priority, but we're also interested in things like parks, libraries, community events, and activities for young children.

Will be staying renting a house with hubby and MIL in the Northport and renting a car for 7 days. First time in Maine. W’re in our planning stages and so far from visiting this sub and friends who come to the area every year we think we have a decent areas to visits - Camden, Belfast, Lincolnville, Owls Head, Boothbay, Cushing, Bar Harbor & Acadia (day trip.) I know we’ll have to pick and choose from those.

My question for today is: in those towns what are great local lunch spots, dinner spots we need reservations & we’d like to do some water related tours for wildlife or sunset or to see the coast. For the you tours do we need to book in advance (if so who and where) and if not these can be booked when we arrive?

We’re also trying to avoid the cruise crowds as much as possible. I know a lot to ask. Lol

Hi Everyone! I’m moving to Maine soon as a single parent with a kid. I’m mainly doing this from across the country and I’m not familiar with New England really. Everyone at my new job has been very nice but no one really wants to say anything bad about areas or has any strong opinions about towns.

That said, I’ve lived a lot of places and I know there’s hidden pockets in every city that either have rowdy college kids, drunks, crime, or weird stuff like smelly paper mills people tend to avoid. The stuff you can’t see online but only know once you live there.

I’m looking in mainly in Brunswick, Freeport, and less so Yarmouth. Do you have any areas you wouldn’t live or have weird stuff I should consider?

Also, any tips on Maine culture would be helpful. Everyone has been incredibly nice to me but I can’t tell if it’s real or just a culture that avoids negativity? I guess I thought it would be more direct communication since I’ve heard the Northeast can be very direct.

I booked a trip to Bar Harbor without doing enough research. Someone tell me how bad of a mistake I made.

I booked October 19-23 without realizing the town would shut down. The flights aren’t changeable (Delta cheapest) but I can call and do my best if it’s a complete bust.

Extra context:

- two adults and a 4 month old - so boat trips or anything cause of the newborn.

- staring in Portland one night then Bar Harbor for 3 nights

I am 25F, and I want to go on my first ever solo trip next year, and I am heavily leaning towards Maine. I want to plan around May or June, but I would love some advice on when would be best for lower prices, to avoid crowds, and also good weather (I've heard the weather can be unpredictable). I've been planning on flying from California to Boston, then renting a car and driving either after spending the night or arriving on an early flight. I was thinking about spending a night around Kennebunkport and Camden, then two nights in Bar Harbor and Portland, where I'll fly out of. Even though I am clumsy, unathletic, and completely out of shape, I want to go to Acadia National Park and hike around and do the Beehive Trail. I know it's probably too early to start planning anything, but I want to get a rough idea of how much it will cost so I can know how much to save for the big cost items, and for all the cute stores I have seen on google maps. As much as I would prefer to go earlier to hopefully avoid the heat, I might be willing to go a bit later in the year.

I know flights and a car are around $1000, and that hotels are going to be probably around $1000, but from picking random dates in random months, I know it can be cheaper. Any suggestions, advice, or even critiques would be appreciated.

Update: I forgot to mention this, but another aspect in planning when I want to go is watching the sunrise from Cadillac Mountain. I would love to watch it, but I am more of a go to sleep at 3 am person rather than wake up then. I know the weather could be unpredictable, but would May/June or September/October be better to go?
