New to the city

I'm a 27f and looking to expand my social circle and meet more young professionals. I'm not really interested in dating events. just want to make friends, build connections, and get out of my comfort zone.
Are there any recurring mixers, networking events, happy hours, volunteer groups, or clubs you'd recommend? I'm open to pretty much anything that has a friendly crowd.

Are there any AI professionals looking to get into public sector projects?

I'm launching an AI for public impact organization in Houston, and would love to connect with any techies/AI professionals in the Houston area.

I'm looking for people who are interested in public impact projects - things that improve public life for all Houstonians, or partner with nonprofits in the area, etc.

If interested, leave a comment here or DM me and happy to chat through your experience and what I'm building.

Temporary childcare/summer camp while visiting sick FIL for 18 mo baby

Looks like we will be in town for a week or two this summer to support and visit my FIL while he’s in the hospital. We still need to work while we’re there, so we would love any recommendations for a week long baby summer camp or something like that for our 18 month old so we can still have time to get a bit of work done and care for my FIL.

Let me know if there’s a better place to ask or really any recommendations for what to do. TIA

Alphabet things to do in Houston

Upvotes

My Kids [4,6,7] and I are trying to explore Houston via the alphabet. For each letter we try a new place around the Houston Metroplex area. I am not overly familiar with the city, and have found difficulty with some of the letters, so if anybody has any suggestions for letters F-Z, that would be very helpful.

Electricity provider?

Hi!! I posted last month about the safety of the montrose/allen parkway area and got great advice!! I have officially signed a lease and am beginning setting up utilities and all of that! From out of state, where electricity is handled TOTALLY different and looking to get an opinion about providers? My locator service also has concierge that helps with the utilities part and last week they said that energy Texas has the best rates, but now suggests Atlantex due to rate changes.

Any experiences/recommendations/advice is greatly appreciated!!

Edited to add: it is a one bed apartment, roughly 1000 sq ft. I will be gone most days from 7 am ~ 5 pm, if that changes any advice!!

Where do I rent if I have no money?

Title is basically true, I am looking at getting away from some less than desirable familial issues and have finally gotten to a point where I’m pretty sure I can afford to leave. I have a 9-5 job that pays me a little more than 1900 dollars a month, with about 900 dollars tied up in insurance, gas, food (both for me and my cat) and a bit into savings. I also do some contract work that earns me around 6000 dollars extra per year. I was hoping to rent a place in the 700-800 dollar a month range, and have my eye on a place between the astrodome and 288 right at 800. I’ve heard some pretty concerning stories though about constant break-ins and quite a bit of other assorted crimes. Im no stranger to living in a not-so-nice area, as my current place is right off of Edgebrook in south Houston, but everyone I’ve talked to says that this area might be worse. My question is then, is there anywhere else to live in Houston within that price point that won’t be as troublesome?

What job opportunities are in Houston right now?

Been job searching in state of California have found no luck and the rent prices are ridiculous. I have a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineer but no experience. I been trying to search for a technician or process engineer 1 role, but have been struggling to find any. Is there any other job opportunities in town?

What is weather like by month!

I know summers in Houston are pretty brutal. Was wondering what it was like outside of those 4 months? Would you all say it is quite tolerable and pleasant? I do know that temps can drop quite a bit! Thank you :-)

Best Barber for a Men’s Flow Haircut Near Memorial Dr. & Energy Corridor Area?

Hey neighbors!

I live off Memorial Dr. near the Energy Corridor (close to my workplace) and I’m looking for a barber who’s experienced with men’s flow haircuts.

I’m a 28-year-old guy who moved here about a year and a half ago, and I’ve still been struggling to find a barber who’s both skilled and willing to work toward a long-term haircut goal instead of just giving a standard trim.

My hair isn’t quite long enough for the look I want yet, so I’m planning to grow it out while getting regular trims to gradually shape it over multiple appointments. I’m looking for someone who understands that process and can help me get there.

If you have a great flow haircut yourself or know a barber nearby who’s really good at this style, I’d really appreciate your recommendations. Bonus points if the shop also offers hair coloring services!

Any insight on these apartments near TMC?

Was looking into places near the medical center, so far have narrowed it down to these places:

Camden Travis Street
Camden Greenway
Camden Plaza
Helix at Med Center
Windsor at West University
MAA Afton Oaks
MAA 510
Bloom at West Univeristy (looks a bit sus tho given the low rent, high availability unit, and little reviews available online)

Any insight or experiences here? I think max I am willing to shell out per month is 1500 total, not including utilities and such.
Thanks :-)

Bulk meat packs, best place to buy? (Chicken/Beef)

I eat a lot of protein-white meat chicken/beef and am looking to get away from buying grocery store meat. It’s just myself and I have a standard size freezer. Any recommendations? I live in SE Houston but don’t mind traveling to other areas if they can’t ship.

Looking for language exchange events in Houston

Does anyone know of any language exchange events or groups in Houston, particularly for young adults?!

I’ve been scouring the internet and social media but haven’t been able to find much. I’m particularly interested in Spanish/English exchange but am open to any multilingual events and would love to build more community w/ fellow language learners & international homies.

Any leads appreciated 🫶

Apartment recommedations

Hello! I'm starting a job in the TMC in October and I am moving from California. I am trying to find an apartment not too far from the TMC and in a safe area. I am 23F and would like to live in a walkable area and possibly catch the metro to go to work. I originally was considering The Hadley in Midtown but I am seeing that Midtown isn't the safest. My budget is 1400/mo for rent. Areas I am considering are Montrose/The Museum District/ maybeee Midtown if someone can convince me its not too bad. I enjoy nightlife and would like to live somewhere in close proximity to it, I'd also like to live somewhere very diverse and safe for a young black professional. Just looking for some insight about these areas and trying to figure out hwat would be the best for me!

I've looked into:

The hadley midtown
Village at west university
Jackson hill apartments
The circle at hermann park

New home builders

Has anyone had experience with builders south of Houston, TX?
I’m comparing builders in the Meridiana community and was hoping to hear about your experiences with Perry, David Weekley, Chesmar, Highland or Newmark.

I’ve heard that the construction manager/superintendent can make a big difference, but I’d love to hear from anyone who’s built or purchased with these builders in Meridiana or the surrounding areas. Any feedback is appreciated!

I’m 99.9% sure they would but I can’t get anyone to answer my phone calls today to confirm. I know there are other places that have them like the post office but I just want to make sure the library will applications available today. Anyone know for a fact?

thanks

update:

question answered - they will have applications

confirmed in person - small lobby next to passport services has physical copies available of all forms available

Dallas people

Can anybody explain what people from Dallas area have against Houston. I recently started going to college at TTU, where like half of the student population is from DFW, and they just make comments like “Houston is so ghetto, I couldn’t live there.” And it’s all be comments that sound similar to this, like I’ve never had a good interaction with someone from Dallas here. Can anyone else relate? Like what’s up with that? I’ve never been to DFW area so I really had no comeback
