I come from a culture where flirting is much more overt, and I'm not sure if there's a cultural difference...
I (F mid-20's) did a summer semester at a university in Japan, and made a Japanese friend (M mid-20's). He was a very nice guy to all of us foreign students. Very polite, a little reserved, but very friendly and was sort of our unofficial tour guide/babysitter as visitors to Japan lol.
He and I hung out a little bit more one-on-one compared to the others because of certain circumstances (our apartments were next to each other and our supervisors were close colleagues, who introduced us). Generally, I just thought we were good platonic friends/colleagues.
However on our last few days together at school he said a few things that felt a little "suspicious" to me:
- He said he was now planning on flying out to my country to come visit this year. I didn't really think of this much at first because traveling is his thing and he visits multiple different countries every year. But I also don't think he had said this to any of the other ladies in class...
- I mentioned that I loved Shiroi Koibito, and he said he'll be sure to bring me lots when he visits
- In another instance I offhandedly mentioned that I liked Castella, and then he said something like, "okay, Shiroi Koibito and Castella, I've learned what presents to give you"
- He has invited me to eat out a few times. But now I think I might've been ruining his game by having our other classmates tag along...
- We walk home together (we lived in the same neighborhood)
- After leaving Japan I casually DM'd him some photos, and he seemed to be putting a bit of effort into continuing the conversation by asking questions and stuff?
I genuinely cannot tell if he's just very nice and friendly or if he's interested in me in some way. Also he's used to foreigners so maybe he's just extra friendly because of that (?)
There is a bit of a language barrier between us (my broken Japanese and his broken English) so I kind of can't gauge his personality either. He seems a little shy and restrained in English but I can tell he's a bit more outgoing in Japanese. I'm now also wondering if my interactions towards him were also "suspicious" in his eyes because I'm a bubbly person to anyone and everyone... now I feel like I've been too "flirty"...
Anyway, I'm just wondering if there's anything more-than-friends going on here or this is just regular friend behavior from a Japanese guy friend towards a girl?
Sorry for the long post. I've been reeling over it and a little panicky about what to do if he really does come visit me this year. (╥﹏╥)
